Description
New Holland Kobelco SK100, SK120, SK120LCV, SK200LCV, SK220LCV 1996 Service Manual

You need the real torque specs for a Kobelco excavator and someone hands you a third-party reprint with values that don’t match the factory build sheet. That costs you billable hours and a comeback if a joint loosens. This is the 1996 factory service manual from New Holland Kobelco – the same binder the dealership techs used. It covers the SK100, SK120, SK120LCV, SK200LCV, and SK220LCV. 200 pages, original OEM print, no aftermarket scaling errors.
Running a six-bay shop in San Antonio, I’ve seen more head bolts than most of you have had hot meals. Aftermarket manuals skip the critical details – like the o-ring joint torque on page 186 or the pin and bushing wear limits in Section 15. This Service Manual gives you the numbers the assembly line used. You don’t guess; you torque to spec and move to the next job.
Engine Specifications and Characteristic Curve (Section 3-1)
Dig into the engine specs on page 4. The engine characteristics curve shows you horsepower and torque at operating RPM. If you’re troubleshooting a low-power complaint, you need that curve to compare against a running machine. The manual also lists the capacity table for lubrication oil and coolant (page 24) – exactly how many quarts go in each system. Don’t trust a generic dipstick reading; the factory fill volume is in this book.
Hydraulic Cylinder List – Section 3-3
Every cylinder on these machines is listed with bore, rod diameter, and stroke. When you’re resealing a boom cylinder on an SK120LCV, you want the exact seal kit dimensions. The manual lists them. No measuring the rod with a caliper and hoping. Page 16 has the cylinder list; cross-check it with the maintenance standard tables starting on page 128.
Torques for Nuts and Sleeves – Page 183
This is where I see guys waste time. They reuse a nut that should have been replaced or torque a hydraulic fitting to a generic value. Page 183 gives you the torque values for nuts and sleeves. Page 184 covers pipe joint torque. And page 186 – o-ring joint torque and handling. A dry o-ring leaks. A cross-threaded nut strips. Use the factory values.
That’s not opinion; it’s a comeback prevention plan.
Mechatro Controller Diagnostics – Section 11
These excavators use the Mechatro controller for pump and engine management. Section 11 covers service diagnosis (page 80), cluster gauge connector pinouts (page 81), and failure history (page 88). If you see a code for the Mechatro “A” adjustment (page 89), this manual walks you through the calibration procedure. Aftermarket manuals omit this – they tell you to “see dealer.” This one tells you the steps.
Hydraulic System Diagram – Page 94 and Electric Circuit Diagram – Page 102
When a pilot line blows or a solenoid fails, you need the schematic to trace the circuit. Page 94 has the hydraulic system diagram. Page 102 has the electric circuit diagram. These are factory drawings – not redrawn by an intern. The line labels and connector numbers match what you see on the machine. Use the conversion table (page 188) to convert metric threads if you’re replacing fittings with inch-based parts.
A word about source authenticity: This manual is an OEM print from 1996. I’ve seen too many reprints where the hydraulic pump control curve (page 77) is blurry or the lifting capacity diagram (page 168) is missing an axis label. KOBELCO factory prints are sharp. The table of contents leads you directly: general dimensions (page 1), performance table (page 18), weight of components (page 19). It’s organized like a technician’s brain – spec first, then procedure.
Don’t trust third-party documentation for something that can crush a guy if a cylinder drops. Use the real thing.
Related manuals include KOBELCO SK100 / SK120 (LC) Hydraulic Excavator Shop Manual and KOBELCO SK100/SK120 Hydraulic Excavator Shop Manual plus Kobelco MARK V Hydraulic Excavator Serviceman Handbook. For background on mechanical drives, see the Manual Transmission basics, though excavators use hydrostatics. The Manual Transmission knowledge helps understand gear ratios but isn’t needed here.
- Does this manual cover the SK200LCV?
- Yes. The manual covers SK200LCV from serial YQ-02801 onward.
- What torque values are listed for the cylinder rod end nut?
- Torque for nuts and sleeves is on page 183. Specific values depend on thread size; check the Referential Datum section.
- Is there a metric-to-imperial conversion table in the manual?
- Page 188 has the Table of Conversion Rate. It lists standard conversions for length, torque, and pressure. Use it when your torque wrench reads ft-lb and the spec says Nm. No separate imperial units in the manual – the factory used metric. The conversion table gets you close enough for safety.
- How is the Mechatro controller troubleshooting covered?
- Section 11 includes failure history, self-diagnosis indication items, and Mechatro “A” adjustment. The trouble-shooting subsection (page 92) walks through codes step-by-step.
Stop billing time to wrong specs. Access the Factory Manual and keep your 6-bay shop moving.
