Torque specifications are on page 22A-1-10. That’s the page I dog-ear. Every bolt in the transmission case, clutch housing, extension housing, transfer case – all have a torque value. Use a calibrated torque wrench, not a “that feels tight” approach. I’ve seen stripped threads in the differential housing from technicians skipping this step. Don’t be that guy.

22A Manual Transmission – Overhaul Coverage

Chapter 3 is the transmission overhaul section – the heart of this manual. It walks you through disassembly, inspection, and reassembly of the F4M21 and five-speed variants. Every step includes notes on which special tools (listed in chapter 2) you need. For example, the input shaft bearing puller – Mitsubishi part number MD998017 – is specified. The differential drive gear backlash specification is in the service spec table. If you’re rebuilding a W5M31 all-wheel-drive variant, you need the center differential section. The manual includes assembly order for the transfer case adapter – something aftermarket manuals often omit. That’s a major pain point saved.

Sealants and Adhesives – Mitsubishi’s Specs

The sealants and adhesives section (part of chapter 1) lists exactly what compound to use for each mating surface. Case halves get a specific liquid gasket – not RTV from your local auto parts store. The manual even gives the drying time and torque sequence for the case bolts. I’ve had a transmission leak because the previous tech used the wrong sealant. That’s an hour of labor wasted. Use the factory spec.
