Mitsubishi gives you Nm and ft-lb for every critical fastener: differential bearing retainer bolts, transfer case adapter nuts, input shaft lock nut. Torque is not a suggestion – it’s a spec. I have seen too many F5M22 cases crack because someone used a beam torque wrench and guessed. This manual lists the exact tightness, plus the sealants and adhesives required for each joint. The SEALANTS AND ADHESIVES table tells you which ThreeBond product to use on the case halves. That matters when you’re building one of these things.

5th Speed Synchronizer: Factory Disassembly Procedure

Chapter 4 covers the 5th Speed Synchronizer, which on the F5M31 and F5M33 is a common wear item. The manual shows the order of disassembly: snap ring, hub sleeve, synchronizer key, spring. If you skip a step or try to pry the hub off without supporting the shaft, you’ll bend the shift fork. The OEM procedure is the only procedure that keeps the transmission in balance. After you finish the synchronizer, the manual moves to input shaft pull and bearing replacement on chapter 5. All the snap ring thicknesses are listed in the ADJUSTMENT SNAP RINGS AND SPACERS chart – you need that data to set preload correctly.

What Does the Service Manual Cover for F5M31 and F5M33?

The F5M31 and F5M33 share the same five-speed front-wheel-drive architecture with differences in gear ratios and the reverse brake mechanism. This manual covers both, plus the W5M31 and W5M33 transfer-equipped variants (those are listed in the GENERAL INFORMATION section). If you are swapping a transmission from a Mitsubishi Expo or Summit Wagon, you need the transfer case adapter specs from chapter 18. The manual includes the drive and driven bevel gear patterns for the transfer unit. That is an area where aftermarket manuals either skip the detail or flatten the curves to a generic drawing. Need the shift fork alignment procedure? Chapter 12. Speedometer driven gear removal? Chapter 13. What torque values are listed for the differential bearing retainer bolts?
The TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table on section 22A-1-10 lists the retainer bolts at a specific ft-lb value. It also includes the tightening sequence for the differential case clamp, the pinion nut, and the transfer adapter bolts. You will find both metric and imperial conversions. Use a calibrated torque wrench – the spec for the input shaft lock nut is not the same as the output shaft nut.
