Hyundai TIBURON, COUPE Technical Manual – Brake System & ABS

If you’ve ever tried to bleed brakes on a Hyundai TIBURON or COUPE without the factory specs, you know the frustration. A master cylinder with two different bore sizes depending on whether it has ABS or not. One wrong part and you’re ordering a new booster. This is the official Hyundai TIBURON, COUPE Technical Manual – 75 pages of factory brake system data. Not a generic aftermarket reprint. This is the PDF that the techs at Hyundai dealerships used.

Hyundai TIBURON COUPE Technical Manual 2002-2009 brake system specifications

Aftermarket manuals often leave out the exact cut-in pressure for the proportioning valve. This manual gives it: 3.4 MPa (495 psi) for general area, 3.92 MPa (568.8 psi) for European community. That’s the difference between a properly balanced brake system and one that locks the rears prematurely. The decompression ratio is also different: 0.27:1 vs 0.32:1. If you’re doing a brake upgrade or swapping a master cylinder, you need those numbers. The ABS section includes the HECU pump type (radial pistons, 2 pistons), motor type (4-pole DC, 180W), LPA volume 3.0cc, HPA volume 0.13cc, inlet and outlet valve diameters. The wheel speed sensor data on page 3 lists internal resistance: 1,385 ± 110Ω at 23°C, output range 15-2,000 Hz, air gap 0.2-0.9 mm. The parking brake lever stroke spec is 6-7 clicks at 196N. That’s factory data, not a guess. When you’re charging $150 an hour in my shop, you don’t have time to guess. You need the book.

Technical Manual: Brake System and ABS Breakdown

The manual is divided into four main sections: General, Brake System, Parking Brake System, and ABS. The General section covers master cylinder and booster specs – tandem type, effective diameters 7+8 in. for CBS, 8+9 in. for ABS. The Brake System section gives front disc dimensions (O.D. 280 mm, thickness 26 mm, pad thickness 11 mm) and rear disc (O.D. 258 mm, thickness 10 mm, pad thickness 9 mm). The Parking Brake System section details the mechanical lever actuation. The ABS section covers the ECU type (motor, valve relay integrated), TCS lamp, and the wheel speed sensor data. Each section includes service standards and tightening torque tables. That’s a lot of data in 75 pages.

Check Brake Pedal Free Play Before You Adjust Anything

Page 3 has the pedal free play spec: 3-8 mm. Use it.

ABS System Specifications – Wheel Speed Sensor Data

The wheel speed sensor data on page 3 lists internal resistance: 1,385 ± 110Ω at 23°C. Output range 15-2,000 Hz. Air gap: 0.2-0.9 mm. If you don’t have these numbers, you’ll be chasing phantom ABS codes.

What Torque Values Are Listed in This Manual?

Tightening torque for the master cylinder to booster mounting bolts is given on page 4. The manual converts Nm to lb-ft. Also included: brake component torque specs for calipers and brackets. Always use the factory values – aftermarket manuals often round them off, which can cause leaks or stripped threads.

3 Service Limits You Cannot Ignore

Brake pad thickness service limit: 2 mm (0.079 in.) for front and rear. Disc thickness minimum for front is 22.4 mm (0.961 in.), rear 8 mm (0.315 in.). Parking brake lever stroke: 6-7 clicks at 196N pull. Exceed these and you’re risking brake failure.

FAQ

Does this manual cover the 2006 TIBURON?
Yes – covers model years 2002-2009.
What is the difference between CBS and ABS master cylinder bore mentioned in the manual?
The manual specifies that the master cylinder inner diameter for CBS is 23.81 mm (0.937 in.) and for ABS (TCS) it is 25.4 mm (1.0 in.). This is critical when selecting a replacement master cylinder. If you install a CBS master cylinder on an ABS car, the fluid displacement will be wrong and the pedal will feel spongy. The manual also includes the proportioning valve cut-in pressure differences between general areas and European community models (3.4 MPa vs 3.92 MPa). These specs are from the factory – not aftermarket interpretation.
