Original price was: $40.04.$26.00Current price is: $26.00.
Factory Hyundai training manual for D4A Series diesel engines (D4AF, D4AE, D4AL). 40 pages of injection, cooling, and fuel system specs.
Description
If you have ever had a D4A-series diesel engine stumble on you after a rebuild because you guessed on the injection pump timing, you know the pain. That is where this Hyundai D4A Series Training Manual comes in. I’ve been an ASE Master Tech for 28 years, and I’ve seen more than one bent valve come from a backyard mechanic trusting a $10 aftermarket book. This is the factory publication—40 pages of what Hyundai actually put in the D4AF, D4AE, and D4AL engines. No guesswork.
That is why this manual exists.
Cooling System: More Than Just Water and Hoses
The Cooling System chapter (Chapter IV) covers the water pump flow, thermostat rating, and fan clutch specs. If you have ever thrown a belt because the tensioner was set to a generic number, you get why factory specs matter. The manual gives you the correct coolant capacity and flow rates. You won’t find this in a Chilton.
Fuel System Diagnostics: Injection Pump and Governor Specs
Chapter VI is the Fuel System. The D4A uses a PE-A(D) injection pump with RLD governor. The manual details the timer degrees (4.5° at 1100–1700 rpm for D4AF) and delivery valve opening pressure (11.3 kg/cm²). Page 5 has the full specification chart. That includes nozzle opening pressure at 220 kg/cm². If you are not using these numbers, you are guessing.
Lubrication System Coverage in 40 Pages
Chapter III is the Lubrication System. It covers oil pump specs, filter bypass valves, and oil pressure limits. The manual doesn’t waste space on fluff. Each line is a spec you can measure against.
7 Chapters That Cover the D4A Series
The manual is organized into seven chapters: Introduction, Structure, Lubrication, Cooling, Intake and Exhaust, Fuel, and Troubleshooting. That’s everything from the block casting to the firing order 1-3-4-2. Compression ratio is 16.5:1 for D4AE/D4AL, 17.5:1 for D4AF. Total displacement varies from 3,298cc to 3,568cc. All on page 5.
Does This Manual Cover the Intake and Exhaust System?
Yes. Chapter V covers intake and exhaust. Turbocharger (D4AE) or turbo intercooler (D4AL) specs are included. Also the valve clearance: 0.4mm for both intake and exhaust (cold). If you are adjusting valves, that is your number.
Troubleshooting Chapter: Where to Start When It Won’t Start
Chapter VII is troubleshooting. It walks you through low compression, fuel starvation, and governor issues. No flowcharts that assume you have a scan tool. This is an older mechanical diesel. You need a multimeter and a pressure gauge. The manual tells you what readings to expect.
If you work on other Hyundai equipment, check Hyundai HL780-9, HL730-9, HL740-9, HL757-9, HL760-9 2012 Training Manual for loader-specific diagnostics. The electrical systems in newer Hyundai excavators are different, but the Hyundai 9 Excavators 2010 Training Manual – Cluster & Modes can help if you are moving to those. For mechatronic and electric systems, see Hyundai Excavators 2011 Training Manual – Mechatronics & Electrics. For a broader understanding of diesel engine technology, Automotive Industry Overview provides context. If you are also working on the transmission, Manual Transmission basics are covered in that resource.
- Is this manual still relevant for modern diesel mechanics?
- Yes, the D4A platform fundamentals apply to later Hyundai diesels.
- What torque specs are included?
- The manual includes factory injection pump timing, nozzle opening pressure (220 kg/cm²), valve clearance (0.4mm cold), and engine speed ranges. These specs are not in generic aftermarket books. You need them for proper assembly. The manual also covers RLD governor adjustment and PE-A injection pump calibration. If you are rebuilding a D4AF or D4AE, you need these numbers. Page 5 lists the specification chart.
If you want to rebuild a D4A engine without coming back to redo the timing, get the manual that has the real numbers. Access the Factory Manual from AutoRepairManuals.com today.
