Hirschmann PRS 40 EZ 2010 Operators Manual cover showing console and crane diagram

I’ve seen too many crane operators chase phantom limit-switch faults because they were working from a photocopy of a photocopy. The Hirschmann PRS 40 EZ 2010 Operators Manual is what you need if you actually want the console to talk back to you the way Hirschmann intended. This is the factory document – P/N 031-300-190-201 Revision F – and it’s 62 pages of warnings, installation steps, calibration procedures, and part numbers. No shortcuts. No reprints.

PRS 40 EZ System: From Console to Calibration

Section 4 of this manual walks through the console itself – the liquid crystal display, the control identification, the menu structure. If you’ve ever stared at a PRS 40 EZ screen that won’t give you the right angle reading, you know how frustrating the factory menu tree can be. Page 5 breaks down every menu option. That alone saves you the hour of pressing buttons hoping for a miracle. Installation instructions for the console are on page 6. Torque specs for the mounting bracket? Not listed explicitly in this operators manual (the service supplement covers that), but the alignment procedure is there. Don’t skip it.

What Does This Operators Manual Cover?

It covers the five main sensor systems: Angle (Section 5), A2B (Section 6), Wind (Section 7), Loadcell (Section 8), and Line Rider (Section 9). Each one has its own operation description, limit settings, and installation procedure. For the A2B system you get the pre-operation inspection checklist (6.1.1.A) and then detailed steps for both hydraulic boom and lattice boom installation. There is a dedicated wiring diagram for the hardwired lattice A2B on page 6.2.2. That diagram alone is worth the price if you’re retrofitting an older crane. The Hirschmann PRS 40 EZ Operator’s / Service Manual also includes the radio module installation (Section 10) and a full service / troubleshooting section (Section 12) with input/output test screens.

7 Systems Documented in 62 Pages

You get Angle, A2B, Wind, Loadcell, Line Rider, Radio Module, and Adding Sensors (Section 11). Each system includes a calibration procedure. The loadcell calibration (Subsection 8.1.5) requires a test weight – no way around it – and the manual gives you the accuracy and test requirements (8.1.5.A). If you try to calibrate a loadcell without this document, you are guessing. And guessing on a load cell means you risk an overload. Period.

A2B Installation: Hydraulic vs Lattice Boom

Section 6.1 covers the hydraulic boom A2B installation – transmitter/switch placement, LED diagnostics, travel position. Section 6.2 gives the lattice boom procedure, including the 101659 Main Boom and 031-300-101-225 Lattice Jib retrofit kits. The wiring diagram for hardwired lattice A2B is specific to those kits. I recommend you have this manual open on the bench when you run those wires. Use the test procedure on page 12.1 to verify continuity before you close up the console.

Source Validity: Why OEM Beats Aftermarket Copies

I have seen aftermarket “PRS 40 EZ” documents that swap the loadcell setup menu order or omit the wind limit programming. This is the original Hirschmann factory manual – revision F dated 11/08/10. Copyright 2006, Hirschmann Inc., Chambersburg PA. The part numbers in Section 14 match what you order from Hirschmann. If you are troubleshooting water ingress (Section 12.3), the moisture troubleshooting steps come from the same engineers who designed the seals. Aftermarket? They do not have that. For related systems, check the Hirschmann PAT PRS 80 Operator / Service Manual if you have a larger crane, or the Hirschmann HC3901 Load Moment Indicator Operator’s Manual for load moment indication. If you are dealing with a Manual Transmission driveline issue, that is a different document – but if your crane has a manual transmission, the wiring diagram in this manual still applies to the console power supply.

Service Screens and Troubleshooting

Section 12 is where you live when the console acts up. You can test outputs and inputs directly from the service screen (12.1.1 and 12.1.2). The battery level check is on 12.1.3. For corrosion problems, Section 12.3 walks through moisture ingress step by step. Battery replacement is covered in Section 13.1 – and yes, it tells you the correct battery type. Part numbers in Section 14 cover everything from the console to the angle sensor to the antenna options. If you need a Manual Transmission component, that’s not here, but the tension sensor wiring is.

Does this manual include part numbers for replacement sensors?
Yes, Section 14 lists part numbers for Console, A2B, Wind, Angle, Antenna Options, Linerider, and Loadcell.
What is the publication year of this operator’s manual?
2010 – Revision F, dated 11/08/2010.
Can I use this manual for the PRS 80 or HC3901?
No, the PRS 40 EZ is a different system. You need the specific manual for PRS 80 or HC3901. We carry both.
Is the calibration procedure for the loadcell detailed enough for a first-time installer?
It gives the test weight procedure and accuracy requirements. If you have never calibrated a load cell, you should also have the manufacturer’s calibration guide for your specific test weight. The manual does not cover load cell theory, but it gives the exact steps to enter the menu, apply the test load, and verify the reading.

You need the factory document. Access the Factory Manual and keep a copy in the cab. You will reference Sections 5.1.4 (Angle Calibration), 8.1.5 (Loadcell Calibration), and 12.2 (Troubleshooting) more than once. The 62 pages are dense – that is how Hirschmann wrote it. I would rather have a dense manual that tells me the exact transmitter LED colors (Section 6.1.3.B) than a fluffy aftermarket PDF that leaves me guessing.
