GEHL SL4510, SL4610 Workshop Manual – The Factory Print You Need

Over the years I’ve opened more than a few skid loaders that had been ‘fixed’ by someone working off a photocopied aftermarket cheat sheet. Creeping drives, loose linkage, stripped threads. The GEHL SL4510, SL4610 Workshop Manual puts a stop to that. It’s 104 pages of factory procedure – not a rehash, not a summary. This is the same binder GEHL dealers used. If you’re maintaining a 4010 series machine, this is the only print you should trust.

GEHL SL4510, SL4610 Workshop Manual: The Factory Data

Right out the gate, the manual puts specifications on page 2. You get fluid capacities, engine data, serial number ranges that matter. The safety section on page 3 isn’t filler – it tells you exactly which decals need to be in place before you start. Ignoring those decal locations (pages 4-5) is how you get oil sprayed in your face when a fitting fails. I’ve seen it.

Two models here: SL4510 gasoline and SL4610 diesel. The manual covers both without guessing. Need to know which brake system your machine has? Page 20 splits it by serial number – before SN3251 for the SL4510, before SN3601 for the SL4610. After those numbers, you get a different disc brake adjustment. One wrong spec and you’ll have a machine that pulls left under load.

Chassis and Overarm Guard – Pages 12-13

Overarm guard removal and installation are on pages 12-13. The manual tells you to support the lift arms before unbolting – not ‘support securely’, but gives you the steps. Lift arm/tilt assembly removal on page 13, installation on page 14. The linkage adjustment procedure on page 15 is the part most guys skip. Then you wonder why the bucket won’t self-level. Follow it to the letter.

Floor plates – rear and front removal and installation are on page 16. Consoles on page 17. Chain case and access covers on page 18. If you’re doing chain case work without this manual, you’re guessing at fastener torque. Don’t.

Brake Systems – Two Separate Procedures Based on Serial Number

Brake adjustment on page 20 has two columns: machines before and after those serial numbers I mentioned. Brake pad replacement on page 21 for the later models. Brake cables on page 22 – removal and installation split the same way. Miss the serial number break and you’ll install the wrong cable routing. The machine will either have no brake or drag constantly.

Page 20 is worth the price of the manual alone if you’re dealing with SL4610 diesel units that have the decel shut-off adjustment. That’s on page 27 for SL4610 before SN4550. No aftermarket PDF will have that detail.

Drives and Linkage Adjustments – Pages 23-26

Traction drive T-bar adjustment, drive linkage neutral adjustment, self-level adjustment – all on pages 23-25. The T-bar assembly removal and installation on page 25. Lift/tilt T-bar on page 26 with control linkage adjustment. Pump control arms and pump arm support on pages 28-29. If the pump arm support is misaligned, you’ll eat hydro pumps. The manual tells you the sequence.

One thing I respect: the manual doesn’t assume you know the neutral adjustment procedure. It walks through the T-bar, then the drive linkage, then the self-level. If the bucket drifts down, you missed page 25. Get it right.

Trouble Shooting Disabled Loader – Pages 6-7

When the loader won’t move, you don’t start pulling pumps. Go to pages 6-7. The trouble shooting chart covers electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical causes. It’s arranged common-sense – check linkages first, then pressure, then valving. Saves you hours. I’ve had guys call me with ‘no drive’ problems that turned out to be a sheared pin in the T-bar. The chart points you there faster than swapping controllers.

Fuel Tank and Fabrication – Niche But Critical

Fuel tank installation is on page 19. Fabrication section on pages 9-11 – that’s for modifying guards or fabricating brackets. If you’re welding on the chassis, you better know what steel they used. The manual gives you that info. Don’t trust a YouTube video for that.

Source Authenticity – OEM vs. Aftermarket

This is a direct scan of the GEHL shop manual. Not a third-party reprint. The decal locations, torque values, and serial number splits are as GEHL released them. I’ve seen aftermarket manuals that combine multiple models into one vague procedure – they skip the serial number break and then you’re stuck. This one keeps them separate. If you want to compare, check out GEHL 1083, 883 Workshop Manual – OEM Factory Shop Manual for the older machines or Gehl SL6620 SL6625 6620 Series Skid Loader Shop Manual for the larger siblings. Also see Gehl 5625 SL5625 Skid Loader Workshop Manual SN 8868+ for another series.

For external references on driveline principles, Manual Transmission explains basics of gear engagement, and Manual Transmission covers shift patterns – useful context but not a substitute for factory specs.

Does the GEHL SL4510, SL4610 Workshop Manual cover both gasoline and diesel models?
Yes. The manual covers SL4510 (gasoline) and SL4610 (diesel) in one document. Specifications section lists both engine types.
What serial number break points are included for brake procedures?
For SL4510: before and after SN3251. For SL4610: before and after SN3601. These splits are critical for brake adjustment and cable routing. Later serial numbers use disc brakes; earlier use drum style.
Is this a direct OEM reprint or a copy?
It’s a factory-original scan from GEHL – same as dealer service binders. No condensation, no generic illustrations. The part numbers and torque values are as published by the manufacturer.
What if I need torque specs for the brake bolts or linkage?
Torque values are embedded in the procedures. For example, brake pad replacement on page 21 lists the bolt torque for the caliper mount. The manual does not have a separate torque chart; you must follow the step-by-step text. That’s how OEMs do it – spec at the point of need.

You don’t rebuild a skid loader by feel. You need the factory sequence, the exact serial number splits, and the torque that keeps threads from pulling. This manual has all that. Access the Factory Manual and keep your 4010 series running.
