The epicyclic reduction has a specific order for removing planetary gears – if you do it wrong, you’ll damage the bearings. The manual shows you the exact sequence. If you’re used to working on a Manual Transmission, the epicyclic reduction in this axle will look familiar, but the pre-load specs are different. The differential group requires shimming similar to a Manual Transmission pinion depth, but the values are axle-specific. Don’t guess.

Understand the Special Tools Before You Start

Special tools can make or break a job. Section F lists the special tools (F.1) – part numbers and names. You need a puller for the wheel hub, a press for the pinion bearings, and a torque multiplier for the pinion nut. The manual even includes the factory tool numbers so you can order them. Trying to rig something up will cost you time and may damage the axle. I’ve seen guys use a cheap puller and crack the hub flange. Section F prevents that.

No, it is a mechanical repair manual for the axle assembly only.
What is the difference between this OEM manual and aftermarket?
Aftermarket manuals often blur photos or skip steps in the epicyclic reduction assembly. This Carraro Drivetech original contains every torque spec, adhesive type, and special tool number from the factory. For example, Section C.7 lists the exact Loctite grade for each bolt. Aftermarket versions guess. That guess costs you time and parts. I’ve had to redo jobs because a generic manual left out the pre-load spec on the pinion bearing. This manual shows it on page 41. That’s why I only trust OEM.
