Specified Tightening Torque: Why Factory Values Matter
Chapter 2 lists every fastener group separately – fuel system, power unit, jet pump, electrical, hull and hood. If you’re doing a crankcase split, the torque for the crankcase assy. differs from the cylinder head. This manual gives you the specific number. Not a range. Not a “tighten until it feels right”. I’ve seen too many jet pump housings crack because a guy used the same torque on the impeller duct bolts as the ride plate bolts. Don’t be that guy.
Safety While Working: Rotating Parts and Impeller Hazards
Page 1 of the General information section covers the stuff that kills you – rotating parts, hot exhaust, electric shock, impeller blades. If you’re pulling the jet pump unit, you need to read the Impeller warning before you put a hand in there. The manual also lists ventilation requirements when handling gasoline. That’s not fluff. That’s how you don’t blow up your garage. The Working with crane subsection tells you the lifting points so you don’t drop the engine on your foot. Yamaha wrote this for dealers who do this daily.
Jet Pump Unit: Drive Shaft Removal and Impeller Check
The Jet pump unit section (Chapter 6) walks you through removing the intake grate, ride plate, and impeller duct. It includes the check procedures for the drive shaft splines and impeller housing clearance. The Drive shaft check and Impeller check subsections tell you what wear limit to look for. I had a customer bring in a VX 700 that lost power at high rpm – turned out the drive shaft splines were rounded. The manual’s inspection criteria caught it before he grenaded the intermediate drive shaft assy. There’s also a Bearing housing section for replacing the bearings and seals. If you’re rebuilding the pump, you need this chapter.
Carburetor Synchronization: High and Low Speed Screw Adjustment
Chapter 4 covers the fuel system, including the carburetor assy. and fuel pump. The High and low speed screw adjustment procedure tells you the initial turns out from seated, and how to sync the throttle valves. The manual also details the choke valve synchronization check. If you’ve got an uneven idle or hesitation off the line, the problem is almost always in the carb linkage or oil pump timing. The Oil pump air bleeding step is in there too – skip that and you’ll starve the crank bearings. The torque spec for the carburetor mounting bolts is listed in the Fuel system tightening torque table. Don’t overtorque – you’ll warp the flange.
Power Unit: Cylinder Head Installation and Torque Specs
The Power unit chapter (5) goes from engine unit removal to reed valve check to cylinder head installation. The Cylinder head installation sequence includes the tightening order and the final torque value. Same for the cylinder base nuts and crankcase bolts. I’ve seen aftermarket manuals leave out the “non-reusable part” list – this one flags every seal, O-ring, and gasket that must be replaced. The Crankshaft check subsection shows radial play limits and how to measure runout with a dial indicator. You need those numbers before you button up the case.
Source Validity: Why Aftermarket Manuals Fall Short
This is the exact manual Yamaha issued to its dealers. The cover says “Service Manual” and the file name ends with F2V-28197-ZN-11. The 181 pages match the original binder. I’ve compared aftermarket PDFs to this – the torque values in the fuel system table are off by 2-3 Nm on the fuel pump bolts, the wiring diagrams skip the control system grounds, and the carburetor oil pump check procedure is missing completely. If you want to keep your VX 700 running for another 500 hours, you use the factory document. No shortcuts.

- Yes. Chapter 7 (Electrical system) covers ignition, charging, control, starting, and meter systems with full schematics. The cable and hose routing diagrams in Chapter 2 also show the harness paths.
- What about the oil pump timing?
- The Fuel system chapter has a dedicated Oil pump subsection with check procedures, hose routing, and air bleeding. The manual also lists the oil line check intervals in the Maintenance chart. If you don’t bleed the oil pump after carburetor removal, the engine seizes. Done.
I’ve wasted enough time on wrong torque specs. You don’t have to. Get the actual factory data – access the Factory Manual now and keep your VX 700 on the water.
