Volkswagen AQY, ATU, ATF, ASU Technical Manual – What You Get on the Bench

Volkswagen AQY/ATU/ATF/ASU Technical Manual cover – 41-page factory Self-Study Programme 233

I’ve seen too many guys reach for a cheap aftermarket manual that says a 2.0L VW head bolt torque is “45 ft-lb”, then wonder why the head gasket leaks by the next oil change. That’s not how you work on a Volkswagen AQY, ATU, ATF, ASU engine. This technical manual is factory-original from VW – the Self-Study Programme 233. It’s not a workshop manual (read that note on page 2 yourself), but it’s the design-and-function document you need before you touch a single tool. If you’ve already torqued head bolts before, you know the difference between a genuine blueprint and a reprint of a reprint.

Two engine families live inside these 41 pages: the 85 kW AQY/ATU and the 88 kW ATF/ASU with the flying camshaft (Flino). The manual starts at page 4 with the 2.0-litre/85 kW engine, then covers crankcase breather, fuel injection, pistons, sensors, that PTFE oil seal, secondary air system, emission control, and OBD II exhaust monitoring. System overviews and function diagrams start at page 18. Self-diagnosis procedures land on page 24. The ATF/ASU section kicks off at page 26 with the flying camshaft on page 28. Service interval extension is on page 34, and there’s a test-your-knowledge section at page 38. That’s the layout – no fluff, no third-party editing.

Crankcase Breather and Fuel Injection – Factory Layout

Page 8 shows exactly how the crankcase breather routes on the AQY/ATU. Page 9 covers the fuel injection system. If you’ve ever fought with a slow crank or a no-start on one of these, the injection diagram alone is worth the price. VW designed these engines with closed-loop emission control, so the fuel trims and sensor feedback are tight. The manual doesn’t give you a torque value for every bolt – that’s in the separate service literature – but it shows you where the fuel injector resistors live and how the ECM interprets the O2 signal. For the Fuel system, that’s the foundation you need.

Sensors, PTFE Oil Seal, and Secondary Air System

Page 10 lists piston specs; page 11 covers sensors – G28 engine speed sensor, knock sensors, the works. Page 12 details the PTFE oil seal installation. That seal is a common leak point, and this manual shows the correct direction and seating depth. Page 13 is the secondary air system – a system that causes more P0420 codes than any other on these engines. The OEM flow diagram will help you diagnose without swapping parts.

Emission control (page 15) and OBD II exhaust monitoring (page 17) are the sections you show a customer when they ask why the CEL is on. VW’s own diagnostic tree is there. Page 24’s self-diagnosis chapter walks you through the CAN bus and J220 Motronic ECM – no aftermarket scanner will replace the factory logic.

Flying Camshaft (Flino) and Service Interval Extension

The ATF/ASU engine introduced a new camshaft design called the flying camshaft (page 28). This manual explains the mechanical advantage and the revised valvetrain geometry. Service interval extension (page 34) shows the oil specification and monitoring system. If you’re servicing a 2004 Golf with the 88 kW engine, these pages are why you don’t guess the oil weight.

Related manuals you’ll want on the shelf: Volkswagen 208 Technical Manual – Factory AC Fundamentals, Volkswagen 02E Technical Manual – 5530-Page Factory Service Data, and Volkswagen Golf, Jetta, GTI, Beetle 2004 Technical Manual – Factory Specs. All are original OEM prints, not copies.

Does This Manual Cover Both 85 kW and 88 kW Engines?

Yes. The first half (pages 4–24) is the AQY/ATU 85 kW engine. The second half (pages 26–36) is the ATF/ASU 88 kW engine with the flying camshaft. Each section has its own system overview and function diagram.

What About Torque Specs and Fluid Capacities?

This is a Technical Manual – Self-Study Programme. It’s built for understanding design and function, not as a repair guide. You’ll find operational values like charge pressure references and sensor voltage ranges, but torque specs live in the workshop manual. That said, the diagrams on page 18 and 20 show fastener locations and seal orientations that prevent you from misassembling the oil pump or intake manifold. Pair this with the factory workshop manual – trust me, you want both. Aftermarket manuals skip the system logic. This one doesn’t. For an overview of the automotive industry and why OEM data matters, see Automotive Industry Overview. Another take on the same point: Automotive Industry Overview.

Does this manual include wiring diagrams for the AQY/ATU?
Yes. Page 20 has the function diagram with pin assignments for the J220 Motronic control unit, G28 speed sensor, N30–N33 injectors, J17 fuel pump relay, and more. It’s a three-page schematic – enough to trace a no-start or misfire.
Is this a reprint from a third party?
No. It’s a direct scan of Volkswagen’s original Self-Study Programme 233. The file name even starts with Volkswagen_AQY-ATU-ATF-ASU_Technical_Manual_en. No watermark, no cropped pages. You get the same PDF VW dealers used in 1999.

You’ve seen what happens when you go off factory spec. The engine sits on the stand, the customer waits, and you eat the labor. Don’t be that guy. Access the Factory Manual and keep it on your tablet while you’re under the hood. It’s 41 pages – you can read the whole thing in a lunch break and save yourself a come-back.
