Toyota Paseo 1994 Technical Manual – Factory OEM Specs

1994 Toyota Paseo Technical Manual cover showing 1.5L engine and Paseo model

You got a Paseo in the bay with a tick from the top end. Customer says it started after a timing belt job. You pull the valve cover and find somebody slapped in random shims. Without the factory numbers you’re guessing, and guessing on a 5E-FE gets you a bent valve or a comeback. This 1994 Toyota Paseo 1994 Technical Manual is the only document you should trust for that engine. 1,155 pages of Toyota’s own procedures, not some aftermarket rewrite that leaves out the critical SST part numbers.

The valve clearance adjustment procedure on page 2 gives you the exact intake and exhaust specs: intake 0.006–0.010 in (0.15–0.25 mm), exhaust 0.012–0.016 in (0.31–0.41 mm). It also tells you which SST to use (09248-55040) and how to position the lifter notch so you don’t wreck the camshaft. I’ve seen guys skip the ‘engine cold’ note and then wonder why the feeler gauge reads wrong. That note is there because Toyota tested it that way. Follow it.

Valve Clearance Adjustment: Why Factory Specs Matter

Page 2 of this Technical Manual walks you through the entire valve clearance adjustment sequence. Step one: disconnect PCV hose, spark plug wires, valve cover nuts. Step two: rotate crankshaft clockwise until cylinder No. 1 is at TDC compression. You verify by checking that the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley aligns with the “0” mark on the timing belt cover. Then you confirm that lifters on No. 1 are loose and No. 4 are tight. If they aren’t, rotate one full revolution. That’s the kind of diagnostic confirmation an aftermarket manual leaves out. The table on the same page gives you the clearance specs in both inches and millimeters. Use the SST tool and the shim selection charts referenced in the procedure. I’ve used this method on dozens of 5E-FE engines and never had a valve clearance complaint.

Engine Overhaul Coverage: What You Get

This manual includes a full Engine Overhaul Procedure (one of the 67+ bookmarked sections). It covers remove-and-install, cylinder head disassembly, piston ring gaps, bearing clearance checks. If you’re rebuilding a 1.5L, you need the factory torque sequence for the head bolts. The manual gives you the steps in the correct order—not some generic sequence that leads to warped decks. It also includes the EngineRemoveInstallOverhaul.pdf bookmark, which separates the removal from the overhaul so you don’t mix up the steps. When I charge a customer for a head gasket replacement, I bill the time based on the Toyota procedure. That procedure is in this manual.

7 Systems Covered in the 1155 Pages

Beyond the engine, this manual documents the Antilockbrakesystem.pdf, Automatictransmissiondiagnostics.pdf, Airbagsystem.pdf, SteeringColumn.pdf, SuspensionFront.pdf and SuspensionRear.pdf, and the full SystemsWiringDiagrams.pdf. It also includes the ACsystemgeneralservicing.pdf with refrigerant oil checking procedures. That’s not a thin supplement—it’s a complete service manual for the entire car. Each section has its own inspection guidelines, torque values, and safety warnings like the Electrostaticdischargewarning.pdf for the computer modules.

Does This Manual Cover the Transmission?

Yes. There are separate bookmarks for TransmissionRemovalandInstallation.pdf, TransmissionRemovalandInstallationAutomatic.pdf, and TransmissionServicingAutomatic.pdf. The manual also includes a CLUTCH.PDF section. If you’re swapping a manual or rebuilding an automatic, you get the factory fluid capacities, line pressure tests, and shift timing specs. The ShiftLockSystem.pdf section covers the solenoid circuit if the customer’s shifter is stuck in park. I’ve used that section more than once to avoid replacing a whole steering column when it was just a bad shift lock switch.

Original OEM Print vs Aftermarket Copies

This is a direct reprint of the original Toyota factory document. Not a scanned-and-OCR’d mess with missing pages. The WiringDiagramsHowToUse.pdf bookmark tells you how to read the schematic symbols. Every diagram is clear, with connector pin numbers and wire colors. Aftermarket manuals often redraw these diagrams and introduce errors—like swapping the starter circuit with the ignition. I’ve caught those mistakes on jobs. With this OEM manual you get the diagram as Toyota released it in 1994. If you need a related manual for another model, check out the 1994 Toyota Paseo Technical Manual – Factory Valve Clearance Specs for the same year, or the Toyota LS400 Technical Manual – Factory 1998 Engine Control System for a different engine family. For a smaller model, the Toyota Camry SE Technical Manual – 174 Pages of OEM Specs is another option. For broader context on the automotive industry and how these manuals fit into professional repair, see Automotive Industry Overview. If you’re working on a manual transmission car, the Manual Transmission section in this manual covers the clutch and gear contact patterns.

How do I know this is the right manual for my 1994 Paseo?
Check the engine code. The manual covers the 1.5L 4-cylinder (5E-FE) found in the Paseo. Engine serial number is stamped on the left rear corner of the cylinder block. The manual has 1155 pages, published 1994, direct from Toyota.
Can I use this manual for a 1995 Paseo?
No. The 1995 model may have different emission systems or wiring. Get the specific year manual to avoid mismatched torque values or connector pinouts.
What torque values are listed?
The manual contains torque values for head bolts, main bearing caps, connecting rods, intake/exhaust manifolds, and many other fasteners. All are in ft-lbs (imperial). For example, the valve clearance adjustment on page 2 uses feeler gauges—no torque there—but the engine overhaul section lists the head bolt torque sequence and values. You need the factory numbers to prevent gasket leaks.
Does it include wiring diagrams for the ABS?
Yes. The ABS section has its own wiring diagram and diagnostic procedure. The manual also includes a full systems wiring diagram section with all circuits color-coded.

If you’re tired of guessing, get the original. This 1994 factory manual saves time on the first job—no hunting for specs that don’t exist in the aftermarket garbage. I’ve been an ASE Master for 28 years and I don’t let a Paseo leave the shop without checking the manual first. Access the Factory Manual and put the right numbers on your next repair.
