Description

Subaru IMPREZA 2002 Service Manual

I’ve been turning wrenches since before some of you were born. I’ve seen cheap aftermarket manuals that give you torque specs pulled from thin air. That’s how you get a head gasket failure six months later. The Subaru IMPREZA 2002 Service Manual is the real deal—factory printed, 2874 pages thick, covering every system from the Engine to the Brake lines. If you’re working on a 2002 Impreza and you don’t have this on your bench, you’re guessing. And I don’t like guessing.

What the 2002 IMPREZA Service Manual Covers

This manual splits into seven sections: General Information, Engine 1, Engine 2, Transmission, Chassis, Body, and Wiring System. The opening page (page 1) lists all seven. That’s not a table of contents you have to guess at—it’s a quick reference index. You want the specs for the Suspension? Go to the Chassis section. Need the Brake line inspection procedure? It’s under General Information in the Periodic Maintenance Services. Every system is broken down into removal, installation, inspection, and adjustment. No ambiguity.

Specifications Section: Engine, Electrical, Transmission, Suspension, Brake

The Specifications sub-section under General Information gives you the hard numbers. Dimensions, Engine displacement and compression, Electrical system voltage and amperage, Transmission gear ratios, Steering angles, Suspension alignment specs, Brake fluid type and capacity, Tire pressures, fluid capacities, and vehicle weight. I’ve used these numbers to set up alignments and verify engine builds. If you rely on aftermarket data you might be off by 5 ft-lbs. That difference can cost you a head bolt failure.

Factory data.

Periodic Maintenance Services: Schedule, Oil, Filters, Belts

Subaru defines two maintenance schedules: Schedule 1 and Schedule 2. Each lists intervals for engine oil replacement, spark plugs, drive belts, camshaft drive belt, fuel filter, coolant, transmission oil, ATF, differential oil, brake fluid, and more. It even includes an inspection procedure for the Supplemental Restraint System. On page 2 of the manual, the foreword makes it clear this is for experienced mechanics—but if you follow these schedules, you’ll keep the car running for 200,000 miles. The camshaft drive belt replacement procedure alone is worth the price. I’ve seen guys skip the tensioner adjustment step. This manual doesn’t let you skip.

Fuel Injection (Fuel Systems) Section: From Throttle Body to Fuel Pump

The ENGINE1 section includes the Fuel Injection sub-section (SOHC). It covers the throttle body, intake manifold, all sensors (ECT, crank, cam, knock, TPS, IAT, MAP, atmospheric), idle air control valve, fuel injectors, oxygen sensors, ECM, relays, fuel tank, fuel pump, and level sensors. Each component has a removal and installation procedure. For example, the fuel pump removal includes cautions about static electricity and a specific sequence. Aftermarket manuals often omit the torque for the fuel tank retaining bolts. This one has it.

Precaution and Pre-Delivery Inspection: Factory Procedures

You might be tempted to skip the Precaution and Pre-Delivery Inspection sections. Don’t. The Precaution section lists general safety warnings—battery disconnect, fuel system pressure relief, SRS handling. The Pre-delivery Inspection (PDI) covers what the dealer checks before the car leaves the lot. If you’re buying a used 2002 Impreza, run through that PDI checklist yourself. It includes a general inspection and a procedure list. Knowing what Subaru considered critical at delivery helps you spot issues the previous owner ignored.

If you need manuals for other years, check out SUBARU IMPREZA 1993 Service Manual – Section: Electrical Section for older models. For a full list of Impreza manuals, go to Subaru Impreza Service Manual. The 1994 version has its own engine section: SUBARU Impreza 1994 Service Manual – Section: Engine Section. For general automotive repair standards, you can read Automotive Industry Overview but remember Subaru has its own specs. Also see Automotive Industry Overview.

Does this manual include wiring diagrams?
Yes, the Wiring System Section covers all electrical diagrams.
How do I find the correct torque specs for the cylinder head?
Look in the Engine section under specifications. The manual provides torque values for each bolt in a table, including the tightening sequence. Aftermarket manuals often omit the sequence or give a single number that covers all bolts. Subaru’s factory data lists the exact ft-lbs for each bolt and the order to tighten them. If you don’t have that, you risk warping the cylinder head. I’ve had to redo jobs because someone used an aftermarket manual that said “torque to 60 ft-lbs.” On the EJ20, that’s wrong. The factory spec is different for each bolt position. This manual has it.

You need this manual on your tablet or printed out before you touch a bolt. Access the Factory Manual now and get the job done right.
