I don’t care how many years you’ve been wrenching – the minute you hang a rebuilt valve bank on a 440b without the factory hydraulic schematic, you’re gambling with someone’s fingers. Hydraulic Components Location – Beyond the Valve Bank

Page 1 shows the F.C.H 55 layout: the 350 B, 420 B, 190 B, 220 B valve banks are all drawn with their correct block IDs. You get the steering pump, brake pump, variable displacement pump, manipulator radiator pump, fuel tank, and the charge pump for the converter. Every component has a reference line to the main circuit. I’ve seen shops swap a 190 B block into a 420 B circuit because the ports looked the same – then the pressure switch blew a dump line. The manual lists the relief valve at 120 bar, the accumulator at 1.4 L, and the two pressure switches: 170 bar and 210 bar. That’s the kind of data you set a torquewrench with, not a feeler gauge.

3 Machine Families – 440b, 3506, 5605

These three models share a main circuit architecture but differ in pilot circuit routing and return spring configurations. The schematic on page 3 splits the lines: main circuit, pilot circuit, return spring, adjustable valve, regulator, relief valve, shock absorber valve, T-connections, and separate circuit. Each model (440b, 3506, 5605) is color-coded on the same spread. You don’t flip between three binders. One look tells you which hose goes to the boom hoist manifold and which goes to the winch valve (option). If you’re swapping a hose assembly on a 3506, the schematic shows you the exact T-connection order so you don’t dead-end the return line.

Pressure Switches and Shuttle Valves – Page 1 Specs

Two pressure switches on this system: the 170-bar (≈2465 psi) and the 210-bar (≈3045 psi). The shuttle valve and no-return valve are drawn on page 4. The restrictor valve location is also marked. If you’re chasing a slow boom extend, check the restrictor valve before you condem the pump. This manual includes the temperature switch (spelled ‘TEMPUR’ in the original print – that’s how PPM wrote it) and the indicator circuit. Aftermarket diagrams often combine the shuttle valve and the no-return valve into one symbol – then you get backflow into the pilot circuit. This document keeps them separate.

What You Won’t Find in a Third-Party Schematic

Before You Open the Hydraulic Tank – Check the Schematic

You don’t guess and check on a 5605. The oil tank, filters (hydraulic and braking), coolers, and the braking pump for cooling are all drawn with their line sizes and connection points. If you miss the oil cooling pump circuit, the boom hoist manifold starves under continuous load. The brake oil cooler circuit is separate – don’t cross it. Page 5 shows the reservoir, variable capacity pump, fixed capacity pump, filter, and cooler in one clean diagram. That page alone saves an hour of tracing lines under a dirty frame.

Does this manual cover the winch valve option?

Yes. The winch valve is marked as optional on the component location page, and the schematic includes the connection ports. If your machine doesn’t have the winch, ignore those lines.

Will this work for a 440b that was built before 1995?

PPM used the same hydraulic architecture across production years for the 440b, 3506, and 5605 series. The schematic shows all standard components – accumulator, relief valves, pressure switches – without model-year-specific changes.
