Perkins 3.152 workshop manual cover 1991 102 pages OEM

Perkins 3.152, 3.1522, 3.1524, T3.1524, D3.152 1991 Workshop Manual

If you’ve ever tried to rebuild a Perkins 3.152 using a generic manual, you know the drill – vague tolerances, missing torque values, and wiring diagrams that look like a kid drew them. That garbage costs you time and parts. This is the real factory book from Perkins Engines Limited, 1991, 102 pages. It came off the press to train techs who worked on these diesels every day. I’ve used it. It works.

Flipping open page 3 shows the full contents: General info, Engine views, Technical data, Fault diagnosis, Cylinder head, Cylinder block, Crankshaft, Timing case, Timing, Lubrication, Cooling, Fuel, Flywheel, Electrical, Turbocharger, Marine engines. That’s every major system on a 3.1522 or T3.1524. No filler.

Technical Data – Page 4 Essentials

Section C (Technical data) gives you the hard numbers: compression pressures, valve clearances, injection timing. Page 4 also covers engine identification – so you know exactly which variant you’re working on. The D3.152 marine version gets its own notes. I’ve seen guys put car specs on a boat engine – that ends with a hole in the hull. This manual stops that.

Cylinder Head and Cylinder Block: Factory Sequence

The cylinder head section (Section F) walks you through bolt removal order, tightening sequence, and warpage limits. Same for the cylinder block – liner protrusion heights, bore wear limits. If you skip the sequence on a 3.152, you’ll warp the head. Done it. Not fun. The manual calls out the exact tool numbers for pulling liners – Approved service tools are listed in Section Y. No guessing.

Crankshaft and Main Bearings: Torque Specs

Section H covers crankshaft and main bearings. Factory clearances, end float, and bolt torques – not “tighten securely” garbage. This is what Perkins stamped on the print. The crankshaft journal sizes are in the technical data. You’ll also find the flywheel housing alignment procedure in Section P. If the bellhousing face is off by 0.005”, you’ll eat clutches.

Fuel and Cooling Systems: OEM Flow Diagrams

Section N (Fuel system) includes the injection pump timing procedure, injector pop pressures, and fuel lift pump specs. The cooling system section (Section M) gives coolant capacity, thermostat rating, and water pump rebuild steps. Electrical system (Section Q) has the wiring schematic for the alternator and starter. Works for the D3.152 and 3.1524. I’ve used it to fix a no-start on a T3.1524 that three other shops gave up on – turned out to be a bad ground on the stop solenoid. The manual’s diagram showed it in two minutes.

Why Aftermarket Manuals Fail

Third-party publishers copy old data, miss revisions, and often skip safety warnings. Perkins issued amendment sheets – this manual includes Amendment 1 from November 1991 (see page 2). Aftermarket books never have those updates. For the 3.152 series, you need the exact injection timing for the Manual Transmission version versus the marine gear. This manual has it. Nothing else does.

If you’re working on a 3.1522 or any of the 3.152 variants, stop using internet forum torque values. Get the factory spec. Then check the related manuals – the Perkins 3.152 Series 1991 Workshop Manual is the core book, but for later engine numbers you’ll want the Perkins 3.152, 4.236, 4.108, 4.203, 6.3544 1997 Technical Manual – OEM Specs for updated data. Also pair it with the Perkins D3.152 2009 Parts Catalog – OEM Part Numbers and Diagrams for ordering the right gaskets.

For Manual Transmission applications, the flywheel and housing specs are in Section J and P. Don’t mix them with automatic bellhousings.

Who Needs This Manual

Home garage guys rebuilding a 3.152 for a generator or tractor. Shop owners who need to hand a tech the right torque sequence. Marine mechanics working on a D3.152M. Beginners scared of the injection pump – the fault diagnosis section (Section E) gives you a logical flow. It’s 102 pages, small enough to keep on the bench. I keep mine greasy because I use it.

Does this manual cover the turbocharged T3.1524?
Yes. The turbocharger section (Section R) gives oil feed/return specs, maximum boost pressure, and wastegate adjustment. Also covers the marine turbo variant.
What about the electrical system? Is it just a generic diagram?
Section Q has the full wiring diagram for the 12‑volt system – alternator, starter, stop solenoid, coolant temperature sender, oil pressure switch. All wire colors and connector positions. I’ve used it to trace a short on a 3.1524. Took ten minutes. The diagram also covers the glow plug circuit for cold starts. If you’re working on a D3.152 with a pre‑heat system, this is the only diagram that matches the factory harness.

Stop fighting with photocopies and PDFs that don’t zoom right. Access the Factory Manual and get the real Perkins data on your screen or printed. Your 3.152, 3.1522, 3.1524, T3.1524, or D3.152 will thank you. No more second‑guessing. No more stripped bolts.
