New Holland LM 1340 TURBO Workshop Manual cover - 503 pages OEM factory service repair manual

You pull a New Holland telehandler into the bay, customer says the Powershift gearbox is slipping or the engine won’t hold idle. You open a generic aftermarket PDF and find torque values that don’t match, wiring diagrams that stop halfway, and a fuel system section that assumes every injection pump is the same. That’s lost time and maybe a blown seal. This Workshop Manual – factory-printed, 503 pages – covers the LM 1340 TURBO, LM 1343 TURBO, LM 1345 TURBO, LM 1443 TURBO, and LM 1445 TURBO. It’s the same binder the dealership techs use. No translation errors. No missing pages.

Engine Overhaul: Replacing Injectors and Setting Timing

Section 10 is the engine chapter – 112 pages of specs, removal procedures, and tolerances. You need to pull the Engine and transmission group from the vehicle? Procedure starts on page 43. Valve clearance adjustment is on page 100. Setting the injection pump timing? Page 102 gives you the exact marks. The manual doesn’t skip the lubrication system (page 24) or Cooling (page 29). If you’re replacing injectors, page 98 walks through the extraction and installation with the special tool numbers listed on page 108. I’ve seen guys get the blow-by from using aftermarket crush washers – the OEM section lists the correct torque for the injection lines. Don’t guess.

Get the Right Torque Data from Section 00 and 10

Page 112 lists the mounting plays – those are the numbers you need for bearing preload on the front axle and engine mounts. The manual opens with general instructions and safety rules (page 1-3). That’s not filler. The environmental considerations on page 9? That’s about catching fluids and disposing of filters, not a tree-hugger lecture. Product identification on page 6 tells you where the serial number is stamped. If you can’t find that, the parts counter won’t help you. Don’t start a job without verifying the model variant.

7 Key Systems Covered in This Workshop Manual

Here’s what’s inside – and I’m reading from the table of contents, not guessing:

  • SECTION 00 – GENERAL: safety, product ID, maintenance techniques
  • SECTION 10 – ENGINE: from coding of engines to troubleshooting electrical components (page 103) and tooling (page 108)
  • SECTION 21 – POWERSHIFT GEARBOX: 104 pages on the 4×4 gearbox, modulation valve operation, torque converter hydraulic circuit, and pressure testing procedures (page 38-39)
  • SECTION 25 – FRONT AXLE: wheel toe-in (page 5), axle drive pinion bearing adjustment (page 52), front drive shaft (page 57)

Also includes Transmission and hydraulic oil circuit diagrams (page 15), which are vital for diagnosing a lazy clutch pack. The Manual Transmission section covers the gearbox overhaul from page 45 onward – pressure testing clutch circuits is on page 38. If you skip the check points on page 40, you’ll miss a restriction in the oil cooler circuit and cook the torque converter.

What About the Powershift Gearbox?

Section 21 is the longest in the manual for good reason. The Powershift gearbox on these LM telehandlers has a specific modulation valve sequence and the troubleshooting guide (page 35) lists 15+ symptoms with cross-reference to pressure test procedures. You’ll find the line pressure specs for the clutch and high-pressure circuit – those are in bar, but use a converter if you need PSI. The manual gives the oil flow diagrams, not just schematics. If you’re swapping a torque converter, the overhaul section (page 45) includes bolt lengths and torque sequences. Need to adjust the idler gear case? Page 7. Don’t trust aftermarket Manual Transmission reprints – they leave out the cooler circuit diagram and the modulation valve operation description on page 31.

Front Axle Overhaul: Pinion Bearing Adjustment

Section 25 starts with specifications and operation. The front axle removal procedure is on page 6 – it tells you to support the machine at the frame, not the axle housing. Component overhaul from page 7 includes the axle drive pinion bearing adjustment (page 52) with preload shim selection. The installation and adjustment instructions on page 54 are precise: you rotate the pinion three full turns to seat the bearings before measuring drag torque. I’ve seen guys skip that step and the pinion seizes after 50 hours. The manual also covers the front drive shaft spline lubrication. Not a throwaway paragraph – that’s a common leak point.

OEM Documentation vs Aftermarket

I’ve got a drawer full of aftermarket manuals. Some are photocopies of copies, blurred torque charts, and missing pages. This is a genuine New Holland factory print, copyright 2006, part number 604.13.542.01. The OCR excerpt on page 2 includes the safety alert symbols and a clear warning: “All maintenance and repair interventions … must be performed exclusively by the Service Organization … using … recommended specific tools.” That’s not ego – that’s liability protection. The wiring diagrams in Section 10 and the hydraulic circuits in Section 21 are drawn to New Holland’s schematic standards, not a third-party re-draw. If you need a more compact reference, check the New Holland LM 1343 TURBO 2006 Repair Manual – 117 Pages for a stripped-down version, but for the full teardown you want the 503-page original. Also see the New Holland LM1330 LM1333 2008 OEM Workshop Manual for earlier models, and the New Holland E245B, E215B 2007 Workshop Manual – 821 Pages of OEM Factory Specs for excavator work.

FAQ – Real Questions from the Shop Floor

Does this manual cover the fuel injection pump removal?
Yes, Section 10, page 102 – timing of the injection pump, with special tool numbers on page 108. The fuel system chapter (page 31) includes mechanical injection and injection assembly (page 33).
Will this manual work for the LM 1743 TURBO?
No. The models listed are 1340, 1343, 1345, 1443, and 1445. The LM 1743 is mentioned in the front matter but not covered. Check the product title.

You don’t need to be a dealer to get the right spec. 503 pages, OEM, with the same torque chart that sits on a factory tech’s bench. Access the Factory Manual from AutoRepairManuals and get back to turning wrenches with actual numbers.
