New Holland H8040 2013 Service Manual

New Holland H8040 2013 Service Manual cover - windrower repair manual

Look, I’ve been turning wrenches since before most of you were born. When a windrower shows up in my bay with a hydrostatic failure or a wiring gremlin, the last thing I want is an aftermarket manual that guesses specs. That’s why the New Holland H8040 2013 Service Manual sits on my bench. This is factory OEM documentation – 1633 pages of what New Holland engineers wrote for their own techs. Not some third-party reprint. If you’re working on a H8040 Self-Propelled Windrower from PIN YCG667001 and above, you need this.

Engine Section: From PIN YCG667001 and Above

Page 10 covers the engine and crankcase, air cleaners, fuel tanks, injection system, intake and exhaust manifolds, and cooling system. Need the head bolt torque? Page 10 has it – exact spec, not a recommendation. The manual gives you the sequence and the angle. This is the difference between a gasket that holds and a comebacker. Also includes fuel injection timing and pump removal procedures. If you skip the factory procedure, you’ll be pulling the head again.

Hydrostatic Drive: Factory Disassembly Procedure

Page 29 of the manual covers the hydrostatic drive system in full detail. This includes the transmission and steering hydrostatic control section (29.1), the hydrostatic transmission assembly (29.2), and the pump and motor components (29.3). If you’re rebuilding the pump, the manual gives you the exact clearance specs for the rotating group and the charge pressure setting. The procedure for bleeding air from the hydrostatic loop is critical – skip it and you’ll cavitate the pump. Aftermarket manuals often tell you to ‘bleed as needed’. That’s useless. The factory manual gives you the specific sequence of opening valves and running the engine at idle for two minutes. Also includes the torque for the pump mounting bolts – 85 lb-ft, not a guess. I’ve seen a loose pump destroy a PTO shaft. This section alone justifies the price of the manual.

What Does the Electrical Section Include?

Electrical systems start on page 55. The back of the manual includes the full electrical schematic. Trace a short or a bad ground in minutes instead of replacing sensors blind. This manual also covers the cab climate control wiring and the attachment header electrical connections. Safety note: Disconnect the battery before probing any harness. The manual explicitly warns you about that. I’ve seen too many guys fry a $800 ECU because they didn’t read the procedure.

3 Reasons to Choose OEM Documentation

First, torque specs are verified. You won’t find “tighten securely” in this manual – every bolt has a value. Second, wiring diagrams are from the factory. Aftermarket diagrams often have wrong colors or missing grounds. Third, safety warnings are included. The manual lists lockout procedures for the PTO and hydrostatic drive. This is not a suggestion; it’s a requirement to avoid injury.

Hydraulic Systems: Control Circuits and Schematics

The hydraulic systems chapter (page 35) covers pump control valves, fixed displacement pump, charge pump, reservoir, cooler, filters, cutter control circuit, and draper header hydraulic drive. The manual includes the hydraulic schematic at the end. If you have a header that won’t lift, the troubleshooting steps in this section will save you from replacing the pump unnecessarily. Follow the pressure test procedure – it’s on page 35.4 for the charge pump.

Nothing beats the factory original.

Does this manual include torque specs for the engine head bolts?
Yes, page 10 lists the exact torque and angle.
Can I use this manual to diagnose an electrical fault in the H8040?
Absolutely. The electrical systems section starts on page 55 and includes a full electrical schematic at the end of the manual. The schematic shows every wire color, connector pinout, and component location. There’s a diagnostic procedure for the starter circuit, alternator, and the control module. You can trace voltage drops using the provided resistance values. I’ve used it to fix intermittent hydraulic clutch engage faults that had two dealerships stumped. The manual also lists the fuse panel layout and relay functions. Without this, you’re guessing – and guessing on a $150k machine costs more than the manual.

You want to fix this machine right the first time? Then get the factory data. Sperry New Holland Model 31 33 36 Service Manual is another option if you have older windrowers, but for the H8040 this is the only source.
