I’ve torn down more rear axles than I care to count. If you’re cracking open a New Holland D65, you need the right numbers – not some aftermarket copy that guesses the torque specs. This New Holland D65 Repair Manual is 28 pages of factory procedure, pulled straight from the OEM documentation. It covers the power components: differential, brakes, final drives, pinion assembly. Everything you’d need to rebuild the back half of this machine without wondering if the bolt will hold. I’ve seen guys try to use universal torque charts and end up with oil leaks that cost them a weekend. The factory specs are not optional – they’re the difference between a reliable machine and a project that never ends.
Most aftermarket manuals miss the details that keep a D65 in the field instead of on a flatbed. Things like brake disc clearance, bearing preload sequence, and the exact torque for the pinion nut. That’s why I only trust OEM prints – and this one is original, not a reprint. You get the same information that a New Holland dealer tech would use.
Brake Overhaul: Page 7
Section B covers the brake overhaul. If the D65 is dragging or losing stopping power, you’re looking at the brake discs and actuating assembly. Page 7 gives the teardown and inspection steps. Pay attention to the brake actuating rod and disc stack – getting that wrong means you’re pulling the axle again in 50 hours. Torque on the brake housing bolts? Axle Bearing Preload Specs
Axle bearing preload on the D65 is not a “feel” job. Section C on page 8 tells you the exact method using a spring scale. I’ve seen guys over-tighten and melt bearings. The factory procedure includes the shim selection step – don’t skip it. The preload affects the pinion depth and ultimately the gear pattern. Get it wrong and the axle whines like a stuck pig.

Section K is where the numbers live: Specifications, Tightening Torque, and Special Tools. Page 21 lists torque values for the axle housing, differential bearing caps, pinion nut, and brake assembly. These are in ft-lb (Imperial, as we use). Do yourself a favor and get a torque wrench that reads in the correct range. A 1/2″ drive click-type will work for most, but the pinion nut might need a beam type for accuracy.
What about the Differential Lock?
Section G – Differential & Mechanical Differential Lock Assembly, page 16. If your D65’s lock isn’t engaging or it’s stuck, the manual walks you through disassembly and re-shimming. The No-Spin differential (Section I) is also covered. These are not common failures, but when they happen, you need the OEM procedure – aftermarket “tips” can cause internal damage.
Check the Pinion Assembly First
Section F, page 13 – Pinion Assembly. If you have vibration or noise, start here. The pinion bearing preload and gear pattern are critical. The manual shows the correct order for installing the pinion, yoke, and nut. Torque on that nut is listed on page 21 – do not guess. I’ve seen a pinion lock nut come loose because someone used an impact gun without checking final torque. That’s a $2,000 mistake.
Why Factory OEM Matters
Don’t trust aftermarket copies. This is a direct access from the OEM source. The only way to get the right data. The manual includes a note that all bolts should be lubricated before torquing. Do not use impact guns for final torque. Always tighten in the sequence shown in the procedure sections. If you skip the preload setup, the torque values will not give correct clamping force.
