Compression Test on Page 26 – Don’t Skip It

Before you pull the head on a 2.3-16, run the compression test. Page 26 shows you cranking rpm, throttle plate position, and acceptable pressure difference between cylinders. No, it's in German. The diagrams, torque tables, and numbered steps are universal. The critical specs are numeric anyway.

Does it cover the automatic transmission?

The manual covers the manual transmission (Getrag 265) in section 68 – full overhaul with bearing preload, shift fork specs, and torque values. There is no section for automatic because this car came exclusively with a 5-speed dog-leg from the factory. If you need automatic transmission info, you would need a separate manual for the 4-speed automatic used in other 201 models.

Can I use this for a 190 E 2.6?

No. This is specific to the 2.3-16 engine code 102.983. Different block, different head, different injection system.

Are the torque specs in ft-lb or Nm?

The original manual publishes all torque values in Nm. You will find a conversion chart on page 12 under “Lo más importante en pocas palabras,” but it is metric. Get a good Nm torque wrench – you will need it for the head bolts and the cam bearing caps.
