Description
Manitou MVT 730, MVT 930, MVT 1130 L, MVT 1230 SL, MVT 1330 SL 1998 Repair Manual
I’ve been twisting wrenches since before most of you were born. When a customer rolls in with a Manitou MVT 730 or a MVT 930 that’s leaking hydrostatic fluid or the boom won’t extend, I grab this 1998 Repair Manual before I touch a single tool. It’s 175 pages of factory procedure, not some aftermarket translation. You need the exact sequence for disassembling the telescopic arm? It’s in there. Oil specs? Page 13. This is the binder that keeps my shop from burning billable hours on guesswork.

What You Get — 175 Pages of Factory Procedure
The table of contents runs from “MANUALE DI RIPARAZIONE DA 4 A 147” — that’s the repair manual from page 4 to 147. Inside you’ll find torque tables, wiring diagrams, and step-by-step disassembly for every system on these machines. The oil and filter specs are on page 13. Scheduled maintenance is on page 14. Every electrical system is broken out by model: pages 23–50 cover the MVT 730, MVT 930, MVT 1130 L, MVT 1230 SL, and MVT 1330 SL individually. If you’re chasing a short in the boom rotation circuit, you go straight to the electrical section for your specific model.
Hydraulics and Pressure Checks: Page 73 Gives You the Numbers
Hydraulic pressure gets people into trouble. Set the relief valve wrong and you blow a seal or worse. This manual has a section called “Controllo pressioni” — pressure checks — starting on page 73. Factory-specified charge and main circuit pressures are laid out in metric units. I convert them to imperial on the fly: 250 bar is roughly 3,625 psi. You won’t find that number in a Chilton’s. The manual also covers the safety valve (page 76), filter removal (page 77), and a trouble-shooting table of defects, causes, and solutions on page 78. That last one saves me time on the floor every month.
Need to bleed the brakes? The brake circuit procedure is on page 89 — includes the parking brake adjustment. Don’t skip the sequence; the manual tells you the order to open the bleeders.
Does This Manual Cover Engine Removal?
Yes, and it’s not a three-sentence overview. Page 118 starts the engine removal sequence: lifting points, bellhousing bolts, and the order to disconnect the hydrostatic pump from the flywheel housing. Follow that, and you won’t bend a drive plate. The same section covers wheel removal on page 126 and differential front/rear axle disassembly from page 127 onward. If you’re swapping a motor in a MVT 1230 SL, have this manual open on the bench.
3 Reasons OEM Documentation Beats Aftermarket Copies
I’ve seen third-party manuals that skip the pressure test sequence or give you a generic wiring diagram that doesn’t match the year. This one was printed by Manitou in June 1998 — ref 547231 (I). It’s the same binder the dealer techs used. Reason one: factory torque specs for every bolt — cylinder mounting, wheel lug nuts, engine mounts. Reason two: the wiring diagrams are model-specific, not a one-size-fits-all. Reason three: disassembly instructions include the order to remove boom sections so you don’t collapse the cylinder support. Aftermarket manuals often rearrange steps. Not this one.
If you’re working on a MVT 1130 L or MVT 1330 SL, you’ll need the hydraulic diagrams for the steering and brake circuits (page 69) and the hydrostatic transmission section (page 72/1). The transmission section includes control and adjustment procedures starting on page 80. For background on how a hydrostatic transmission differs from a traditional Manual Transmission, check the Wikipedia article — but once you understand the theory, come back to this manual for the actual adjustment specs.
Supporting Parts Catalogs
This repair manual works best alongside the factory parts catalogs. If you need to order seals or hoses, grab the MANITOU MVT 730 1994 Parts Catalog”>MANITOU MVT 730 1994 Parts Catalog or the Manitou MVT 930 Parts Catalog”>Manitou MVT 930 Parts Catalog for exact part numbers. For the larger models, the Manitou MVT 1130 L MVT 1340 L 1995 Repair Manual”>Manitou MVT 1130 L MVT 1340 L 1995 Repair Manual covers hydraulic circuit variations — though this 1998 manual already includes all five MVT models.
Another external reference: the hydrostatic pump section uses a swashplate design similar to a Manual Transmission‘s gear reduction concept, but the rebuild steps are unique to Manitou. Stick to the factory document.
FAQ
- Will this manual help me rebuild the telescopic boom?
- Yes. Pages 92 to 117 cover the entire boom and cylinder disassembly: tube replacement (page 93), slewing cylinder removal (page 97), first and second extension disassembly (pages 100–102), and lifting cylinder removal from the machine (page 106). Each step is numbered and includes bolt torque values where applicable.
- Is the wiring diagram in color?
- No. It’s black and white line drawings with labeled connector pins. You’ll need a multimeter and the pin numbers from the manual.
This isn’t a glossy coffee-table book. It’s a greasy-fingered workbench tool. If you’re putting a Manitou back together, you need the factory specs. Stop wasting time on generic procedures. Access the Factory Manual and keep it in your shop.
