Description
Mack MP7, MP8, MP10 2010 Operators Manual – Factory Procedures for the Workbench

If you are turning wrenches on a Mack truck with an MP7, MP8, or MP10 engine and you don’t have the factory Operators Manual from 2010, stop. I’ve seen guys try to guess torque on head bolts because they grabbed a Chilton’s or a generic access. That blows an engine. This manual is 167 pages of Mack-specific data, not a reprint of something scraped from a forum. It covers the CXU, CHU, GU, TD, MRU, and LEU chassis with these engines. You want to keep the coolant where it belongs and the oil where it’s supposed to be? Start here.
167 Pages of Factory Specs
The book runs 167 pages, and every page comes from Mack Trucks, Inc., published April 2010 (part number 21394653). The table of contents alone tells you it’s serious: Foreword, Warning Label Information, General Information including Federal Emission Requirements, Safety Information with subsections on Injury Prevention, Engine Damage Prevention, Electric System Damage Prevention, and Reporting Safety Defects. That is not fluff. That is what keeps you from frying a $12,000 EGR cooler because you skipped the grounding procedure. Page 32 covers electric system damage prevention – I’ve seen shops ignore that and chase gremlins for a week.
MP7, MP8, MP10: Three Engines, One Operators Manual
This manual covers the MP7, MP8, and MP10 – but it treats each one separately where it matters. The engine overview section gives left and right side views for the MP7 and MP8 together (page 35-36), and then separate views for the MP10 (page 37-38). That means you can pinpoint an accessory drive belt or a coolant hose without guessing which side of the engine it’s on. The maintenance schedules in the Maintenance and Service chapter (starting page 51) are listed by engine and chassis application. Do not assume the intervals are the same. The MP10 has a different oil capacity and filter setup. The book spells that out.
What the Manual Covers: From Batteries to Exhaust After-Treatment
The Electrical System chapter (page 39) walks through batteries, the battery warmer, battery condition testing, charging procedures, load testing, electrical connection protection, and precautions when installing electrical equipment. If you are adding a PTO controller or a satellite radio, read page 47 before you tap into the chassis harness. Then the manual moves to Engine Storage (page 50), then Maintenance and Service (page 51) with sections on Cooling System, Fuel System, Engine Oil, Engine Air Filter, Exhaust After-Treatment System, Drive Belt Replacement Intervals, and Automatic Belt Tensioner maintenance. The after-treatment section is critical – if you reset codes without verifying regen intervals, you are going to plug a DPF. The book gives the factory procedure.
Get the Right Torque Values – They Are Not Negotiable
OEM torque specs are scattered through the maintenance sections. The cooling system chapter lists clamp and bolt torques for radiator hoses, fan hub bolts, and thermostat housing. The fuel system section gives injector hold-down torque and high-pressure line fitting specs. I’ve seen a hand-tightened fuel line cause a cab fire. Use the book. If you are doing a cylinder head job on an MP8, do not rely on memory. Mack changed the torque sequence in 2010. This manual has the current spec. You get that here – not from a forum post that might be correct.
A word about aftermarket manuals: they reprint, they simplify, they leave out the safety warnings. This is an original Mack Operators Manual. The proper maintenance procedure starts on page 19. It tells you to lock out the battery, wait for the engine to cool, and use the right lifting equipment. That is not there to pad the page count. It is there because people have been hurt.
Does This Manual Apply to Your Mack Model?
If you own a CXU, CHU, GU, TD, MRU, or LEU chassis with a 2010 model year MP7, MP8, or MP10 engine, yes. The manual is titled “Operator’s Manual Vehicle Maintenance CXU, CHU, GU, TD, MRU and LEU.” It covers both the engine and the vehicle systems that interact with it – batteries, exhaust after-treatment, cooling. If you have a different chassis or a later year, check the Mack MP7 MP8 MP10 Engine Cooling System Service Manual 2009 for cooling-specific data, or the Mack MP7, MP8, MP10 2008 Technical Manual – OEM Tune-Up Specs for earlier tuning. For the MP10 standalone repair, the Mack MP10 2009 Service Manual – OEM Factory Repair Guide is a deeper dive.
And if you are working on the transmission side, consider a Manual Transmission service manual from Mack – the engine manual does not cover the gearbox. Same goes for the Manual Transmission if you have an automated manual – separate documentation.
Safety Is Not Optional
The Safety Information chapter (page 19-34) is mandatory reading. It covers proper maintenance procedure, injury prevention, engine damage prevention, electric system damage prevention, and reporting safety defects. I’ve watched a tech arc a battery to a frame rail because he didn’t disconnect the ground first. Page 39 says: “Batteries are an electrical energy source. They can produce high currents that can cause burns or fires.” That is not a suggestion. If you are a home garage guy, you need to read the electric system damage prevention section (page 32) before you touch the starter wiring. The manual also includes warning label information – know what those decals on the engine valley mean.
One more thing: the manual covers engine storage procedures (page 50). If you park a Mack for more than 30 days, there is a specific oil fogging and battery disconnect sequence. Skip that, and you will have stuck piston rings when you fire it up. The factory wrote it for a reason.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Is this the same as a service repair manual?
- No. This is the Operators Manual – covers maintenance, lubrication, safety, and basic procedures. For overhaul or internal engine repair, you need the Mack service manual.
- Can I use this manual for a 2015 MP8 engine?
- Not directly. The 2010 edition covers 2010 model year engines and chassis. Mack changed some torque specs and emission system components after 2010. For a 2015 MP8, get the corresponding year operator manual. That said, the safety and general engine maintenance principles apply across years, but specific intervals and torque values are year-locked.
I’ve used this manual on the shop floor for coolant drain intervals and belt tension checks. It saves time because you do not have to guess whether the air filter restriction indicator threshold is 25 inches of water or 30 – it’s printed. If you are maintaining a Mack fleet or just your own truck, get the factory document. Access the Factory Manual.
