Mack T313, T318 2008 Service Manual – OEM Factory Transmission Repair

Mack T313-T318 2008 Service Manual cover page showing Maxitorque ES transmissions

I’ve seen more transmissions torn down to a pile of parts because someone used a generic torque chart from the internet. That’s why this Mack T313, T318 2008 Service Manual belongs on your bench if you’re touching a Maxitorque ES transmission. 268 pages of Mack’s own factory procedures, not some third-party rewrite. Every time I see a blown rear seal from a misapplied output flange nut, I think of the kid who skipped the torque page. This manual doesn’t let you guess.

T313 and T318 Gear Ratios and Shift Patterns

You need to know what gear you’re in before you start chasing a noise. The manual lays out the T313 series gear ratios and shift pattern on page 21, and the T318 series on page 22. Different ratios, different shift feel. If you swap a T313 into a truck that had a T318 without rechecking the shift bar housing travel, you’ll grind gears. Mack gives you the tooth counts and the pattern diagrams. No aftermarket house is going to reprint those numbers correctly – I’ve seen them transpose the low-low ratio on a T318(LR). Don’t trust a copied PDF from a forum.

Where Do You Find the Transmission Serial Number?

Before you order a single part, you need the unit identification stamping location. Page 10 shows you exactly where to look on the transmission case. Every T313 and T318 has a stamped number – that’s how you verify whether you have a 21-spline input or the L21 variant. I’ve had two transmissions on the floor that looked identical until I checked the stamp. One was a T313(L), the other a T318(LR21). The internal parts are not interchangeable. Mack included a visual identification section starting on page 9 with callouts so you don’t mix up an LR housing with a standard one.

Troubleshooting – Don’t Guess, Follow the Chart

Troubleshooting charts start on page 42. These are not generic “check oil level” lists. They’re symptom-based: hard shifting, gear clash, oil leaks, PTO engagement issues. For each symptom, Mack lists possible causes in order of likelihood and tells you the exact inspection step. I’ve used these charts to diagnose a sticking shift rail in a T318 without pulling the top cover. Saved a full day of labor. The charts reference the component locator on page 36, so you can find the part fast. A Manual Transmission that shifts poorly is often just a misadjusted interlock – this manual walks you through that adjustment without disassembly.

Maintenance: Oil Level, Oil Change, and the Magnetic Filter Plug

Page 46 covers checking oil level – and Mack is specific about the oil temperature at which you check it. Cold oil reads high. Hot oil reads low. If you overfill because you checked it cold, the air breather will push oil out the top. Page 47 details the oil change procedure, including the magnetic filter plug on page 48. That magnetic plug catches gear debris. If you see fuzz on it every oil change, you’ve got a bearing coming apart. The manual tells you to inspect that plug every service. A Manual Transmission that runs clean oil lasts 500,000 miles. One that gets sludge – not so much.

Guidelines for PTO Use – What the Factory Says

Page 26 lists the guidelines for PTO use on the T313 and T318. Not every PTO fits every housing. Mack gives you the torque ratings and the engagement limits. If you mount a PTO that exceeds the side-load capacity, you’ll crack the countershaft bearing bore. I’ve welded up two cases that way. The manual also covers the power flow diagrams on pages 27–30, so you can see exactly which gears drive the PTO in each range. That matters when you’re wiring a solenoid for remote engagement. Side note: if you work on the Eaton or Fuller families, check out the Mack MP8 2009 Service Manual – OEM Factory Diesel Engine Repair for engine-side diagnostics that pair with this transmission manual.

Right. That’s the kind of detail you get. Three hundred and sixty-eight pages scanned from the actual Mack binder – not a reprint from a data service. The Mack MP8 2009 Service Manual – Factory OEM Diesel Engine Guide covers the engine that’s bolted to this transmission, and the Mack MP7 2009 Service Manual – OEM Factory PDF will help if you’re running the MP7. But for the gearbox itself, this one manual has everything. Original OEM print, not a copy of a copy. If you want to button that transmission up and have it stay sealed, you use factory specs. Period.

Does this manual cover both T313 and T318 transmissions?
Yes. The title lists T313–T318(L)(LR)(21)(L21)(LR21). All variants are included in the 268 pages.
Are torque values listed for every fastener?
Mack doesn’t print a single torque table – instead, each procedure step calls out the required torque in ft-lbs. For example, the output flange nut spec is given in the overhaul section. You have to read the procedure, not just a chart. That’s how factory manuals work. If you want a separate torque table, you’re thinking aftermarket. This manual expects you to follow the steps in order, and the torque numbers appear right where you need them – like the mainshaft nut at reassembly.
Can I use this manual for a non-Mack truck with a T313?
Yes. The manual covers the transmission itself, regardless of chassis brand. All mechanical specs are for the Mack-built Maxitorque ES unit.
Is this the same as the dealer’s manual?
It’s the exact same Mack publication – part number 10-123, revised October 2008. Dealers used this same binder.

Access the Factory Manual. It’s the difference between a rebuild that lasts and a core that goes back on the shelf.
