Lull 522, 522/4, 622, 622/4, 824 Operators Manual

Lull 522, 522/4, 622, 622/4, 824 Operators Manual cover page OEM factory document

If you are running a Lull 522, 522/4, 622, 622/4, or 824 and you have not cracked this Operators Manual yet, you are asking for trouble. I have seen more boom lifts and telehandlers come into my shop with blown seals, bent forks, and overheated hydraulics because somebody thought they could skip the book. That is a 50-dollar mistake on a 50-thousand-dollar machine. This is the real OEM publication—not some aftermarket reprint that leaves out half the torque values. 58 pages, printed from the factory file, covering every model in that series.

58 Pages of Factory Procedure: Introduction to Warranty

First two pages lay out the warranty and registration requirements straight from Lull. The manual says straight up: this book must stay with the machine at all times. Lose it, replace it immediately. That is not a suggestion. The Introduction section on page 2 tells you exactly what you are responsible for before you turn the key. Aftermarket manuals never tell you that your warranty is void if the registration card is missing. This one does.

Machine Familiarity and Pre-Operative Checklist

Pages 2 through 7 cover Machine Familiarity and the Pre-Operative Equipment Checklist. If you lease equipment or run a rental fleet, this section is gold. It walks you through every lever, pedal, and indicator light before you even think about starting the engine. The checklist on page 7 is not optional. Fuel level, hydraulic fluid, tire condition, horn, backup alarm—check it off or park it. I have seen one too many guys drop a load because they skipped the tire inspection.

Load Charts and Operating Procedures

Page 18 gives you the load charts for the 522, 622, and 824 models. Not generic percentages—actual rated capacities at specific boom angles and extensions. Operating procedures run from page 16 to 17 and include the proper sequence for raising, extending, and rotating the boom. If you have a 522/4 or 622/4 with the four-wheel drive, pay attention to the steering and travel speed limits. The manual spells out what happens if you exceed them. Spoiler: it involves a rollover.

Fluid Pressures and Specifications

Page 48 lists fluid pressures for the main hydraulic system, steering circuit, and brake accumulator. And page 43 through 47 give you the full specifications: engine oil capacity, coolant, transmission fluid type, tire sizes, and maximum travel speeds. You want to know what weight oil goes in the Kubota or Perkins Engine? It is in there. You want to know the charge pressure for the hydrostatic drive? Page 48. No guessing.

Lubrication Schedule and Starting the Engine

Starting the Engine is covered on page 15. Sounds simple, but this manual includes the cold-start procedure, glow plug preheat time, and safety interlocks that will kill the starter if the parking brake is off. The Lubrication section (pages 36–42) gives you grease points with intervals in hours, not calendar days. Grease every zerk every 10 hours or before the machine sits overnight. That keeps the pivot pins from wearing loose and slopping the boom. I have rebuilt too many tie rod ends that were dry because the lube chart was missing.

Who Needs This Operators Manual?

If you own a Lull 824 or any of the 522/4 or 622/4 models, you are the audience. DIY operators working a small farm or construction site, rental yard managers handing out keys to inexperienced renters, and shop foremen who need to verify that a machine is safe before it goes back out. This manual is written for the guy in the seat, not the engineer at the desk. It assumes you know how to shift, but it does not assume you know the hydraulic pressure spec for the outriggers. That is 2,500 psi on the 622/4—but I am not telling you to trust that number; buy the book and verify it.

OEM vs Aftermarket: Why This Manual Wins

Third-party documentation is garbage when it comes to safety-critical data like load charts and fluid pressures. I have seen aftermarket reprints that translate metric pressure values wrong, leaving you with a boom that creeps down under load. This manual is a direct scan of the Lull factory publication. Every page matches the original binder that came with the machine. If you need to cross-reference the Manual Transmission shift pattern for the 824, the factory diagram is on the spec pages. No guesswork. And if you need deeper tear-down procedures, check out the Lull 522/522/4/622/622/4/824 Service Manual for repair steps. The Lull Model 522 Illustrated Parts Manual (1998) is also useful if you are hunting part numbers. For the smaller utility machines, the Lull M25RH Hydrostatic Power Buggy Operating Manual has its own set of specs. But for daily operation of the big boom lifts, this Operators Manual is the one you keep in the cab.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this manual cover the 824 model with the four-speed gearbox?
Yes. Page 43 lists the transmission fluid capacity and type for the 824. The load charts also include the 824 specifically.
Can I use this manual for a late-model Lull that has different controls?
The manual covers the 522, 522/4, 622, 622/4, and 824 models as produced through the late 1990s. If your machine has an electronic joystick instead of the mechanical linkage, the operating procedures on page 16 still apply to the boom sequencing, but the control layout will differ. For later machines, check the serial number range in the introduction or contact Lull directly. This is the official OEM document for those exact models, so it assumes the standard control configuration shown in the Machine Familiarity section. Modifications or retrofits are not covered. You will need the specific model-year supplement if your machine has a different emission-tier engine or an updated dash panel. The fluid pressure specs on page 48 remain accurate across production runs unless a field bulletin superseded them. Always check with your dealer if you suspect a discrepancy.

If you want to keep your Lull running without expensive downtime, get the factory manual that tells you exactly what to check before you fire up the engine. Do not rely on a photocopy from a previous owner or a PDF lifted from a forum. Access the Factory Manual here and put it in the machine’s document box. You will thank me the first time the operator complains about a weak lift and you can pull out the fluid pressure spec on page 48 and verify the pump output in twenty minutes.
