Description
Komatsu PC400LC-8, PC450LC-8, PC400-8, PC450-8 Technical Manual

Let me be blunt: if you are touching a Komatsu PC400LC-8, PC450LC-8, PC400-8, PC450-8 Technical Manual and you don’t have the factory spec sheet in your hand, you are gambling with someone’s equipment and your own time. I have seen guys slap aftermarket data into a swing gear and wind up with a backlash so tight the pinion seized at operating temperature. That bill comes out of your pocket. This manual – the actual OEM print from Komatsu – gives you the numbers that keep that from happening. Twenty pages of structure, function, and maintenance standard. Not a reprint. Not a third-party guess. Original factory documentation.
10 Structure, Function and Maintenance Standard
That is the title of the chapter you get. Inside, it breaks down the power train from idler to sprocket. Page 2 shows you the layout: idler, center swivel joint, control valve, final drive, travel motor, engine (SAA6D125E-5), hydraulic pump, travel speed solenoid, swing brake solenoid, swing machinery, swing motor, swing circle. The parts callouts are numbered and cross-referenced. You need to know what the travel motor model is? KMV200ADT-2. That came straight from the Komatsu drawing, not from a forum post.
The swing circle section on page 3 gives you the reduction ratio – minus 6.462 – and the grease quantity: 33 grams of G2-LI. Axial bearing clearance standard is 0.5 to 1.6 mm; repair limit is 3.2 mm. If you are rebuilding a swing race and relying on “close enough,” you are going to replace it again inside 500 hours. Use the factory criteria.
Does This Manual Cover the Swing Circle and Final Drive?
Yes, and it gives you the measurements that matter. Swing circle inner race has 84 teeth, outer race soft zone marked. Final drive is listed on page 6 (the table of contents shows it). Sprocket on page 8. The manual covers the entire power train: idler, center swivel joint, control valve, final drive, travel motor, engine, hydraulic pump, swing brake solenoid, swing machinery, swing motor, swing circle. All part of the standard maintenance section. No vague diagrams – actual cross-section drawings with numbered components.
3 Reasons to Choose OEM Documentation Over Aftermarket
First, the backlash specs. Aftermarket manuals often copy-paste generic values. This manual gives you specific backlash ranges for every gear meshing in the swing machinery. For example, backlash between swing motor shaft and No. 1 sun gear: standard 0.18–0.28 mm, no clearance limit listed because that joint is critical. Between No. 1 sun gear and No. 1 planetary gear: 0.15–0.51 mm standard, 1.00 mm limit. You get all six backlash checks, including the coupling-to-swing-pinion at 0.08–0.25 mm. No aftermarket PDF gives you that level of detail without a lawyer’s disclaimer.
Second, the wear criteria. Page 5 lists clearance between the plate and coupling at 0.57–1.09 mm. That number is the difference between a smooth swing and a wobble that cracks the case. Third, the soft zone marks on the swing circle races. If you don’t clock the inner and outer race soft zones opposite each other during reassembly, the bearing loads unevenly and you get premature failure. The manual marks the “S” positions. That is OEM-only data.
Get the Right Clearance Limits Before You Turn a Bolt
If you are replacing a swing pinion or planetary gear set, you need the numbers. The manual gives you standard clearances and replacement limits for every gear mesh in the swing machinery. Swing pinion to swing circle: 0.00–1.21 mm standard, 2.00 mm limit. No. 2 sun gear to No. 2 planetary gear: 0.16–0.55 mm standard, 1.00 mm limit. You can’t eyeball these. You need feeler gauges and a factory spec sheet. This is that sheet.
Swing Machinery: Backlash and Clearance Limits
The swing machinery section spans pages 4 and 5. Exploded view of the case, cover, No. 1 and No. 2 planetary gears, sun gears, ring gear, swing motor, oil level gauge, drain valve. The reduction ratio formula is given: (19+68)/(16+68) multiplied by something – total ratio 24.039. No guesswork. The backlash table (check items 14 through 22) covers every interface. If you are overhauling the swing drive, you will use every one of those numbers. The wear item (23) warns you to inspect for wear, though the exact measurement is left to the technician’s judgment – but at least you know the limits for the gear lash.
Short paragraph to drive it home: This is the manual your dealer tech uses.
Now, let’s talk audience. If you are a DIY machinery owner with a PC400LC-8 or PC450-8 that needs a swing gear rebuild, you cannot afford to skip the factory procedure. A single misplaced backlash can cost you a motor. If you are a shop owner, hand this manual to your apprentice and tell them to read page 3 and page 5 before they touch the swing circle. It saves you warranty claims. The manual covers serial numbers 70001 and up for all four models: PC400-8, PC400LC-8, PC450-8, PC450LC-8.
Source authenticity? This is a direct scan of the Komatsu Shop Manual SEN02231-00. Not a copy of a copy. The file name alone tells you it’s genuine: KOMATSU_PC400-8-PC400LC-8-PC450-8-PC450LC-8_Technical_Manual_en-35313018181.pdf. Compare that to the junk you find on eBay that says “Komatsu manual” but has no part number. I will take OEM every time.

- How many pages is this manual?
- 20 pages. That covers the entire 10 Structure, function and maintenance standard chapter for the power train.
- Does it include torque specifications?
- This particular manual focuses on structural clearances, backlash, and wear criteria. Torque values are in the separate workshop manual. Page 3 does give axial clearance specs for the swing circle bearing, but not bolt torque.
- What serial numbers are covered?
- 70001 and up for PC400-8, PC400LC-8, PC450-8, and PC450LC-8. Check your machine plate.
- Can I use this for a PC450LC-8 with a different engine?
- The manual references the SAA6D125E-5 engine specifically. If your machine has that engine, yes. If not, you need a manual for your variant. The power train layout should be similar, but verify with the engine serial number.
