John Deere 655, 755, 855, 955, 756 1996 Technical Manual

John Deere 655 1996 Technical Manual cover showing compact utility tractor

You’ve spent an afternoon cussing out a generic PDF that says “tighten to spec” without giving the spec. I’ve been there. That’s why I keep the factory book within arm’s reach. This 1996 John Deere 655, 755, 855, 955, 756 1996 Technical Manual (TM1360) is the same 570-page paper binder we had in the dealer shop when these 55-series tractors were new. No third-party interpretation, no missing pages—just the original OEM procedure.

If you’re working on a 655, 755, 855, 955, or a 756—the manual notes the 756 and 856 are mechanically identical to the 755 and 855—you need the real specs. Aftermarket stuff leaves out the cross‑section views and the exact bleed procedure for the hydrostatic drive. This manual has them.

Section 10 – Specifications and Torque Values

Group 15 lists the bolt torque values John Deere designed the tractor around. Not a range you guess at—the foot‑pound number for every fastener on the machine. I’ve seen a field mechanic break a head bolt at 65 ft·lb because he trusted a reprint. This manual calls out the correct grade of lubricant and tightening sequence. Section 10 also includes the Group 20 fuels and lubricants chart: diesel fuel, hydraulic transmission oil, diesel engine oil, gear oil, and the grease type. You don’t mix specs on a hydrostatic transmission; you use the oil the manual says or you’ll be pulling the center section again.

Fuel and Air Systems – Factory Procedure

Section 30 covers the Fuel transfer pump, tank, and air cleaner removal and installation. The manual splits the air cleaner procedure by serial number: early 655, 755/756 and early 855/856 tractors get one path; late 855 and all 955 tractors get another. That kind of detail is what you pay for. Skipping the fuel tank tube and sender removal steps costs you a busted sender wire. The manual lays out the tool list for each job up front.

Hydrostatic Transmission Overhaul

Section 50 is the biggest section—the hydrostatic Transmission and transaxle. The cross‑section views alone are worth the price. You get the charge pump removal, the bleed procedure, and the complete disassembly and assembly of the PTO clutch. Group 10 deals with the transaxle: shimming the differential, adjusting backlash, and installing the front case cover. If you’ve never pulled a rockshaft housing on a 955, the step‑by‑step shows exactly which linkage to disconnect first. I’ve used these pages to walk a junior tech through a seal replacement in forty minutes flat.

3 Reasons This OEM Manual Beats Aftermarket Copies

  • The safety messages are printed where they matter—not buried in a separate PDF. Group 05 in Section 10 is all safety.
  • Every torque spec comes from John Deere’s test lab, not a third‑party guess.
  • The electrical section (Section 40) includes the Nippon Denso alternator disassembly and test procedures for both the 35‑amp and 40‑amp units. Aftermarket manuals crop out the rotor test specs.

If you’re still using a obtained scan that’s missing every other page, you’re risking a come‑back. This is the same binder we had in the dealer bays in 1996.

Does This Manual Cover the 856 Model?

Yes. The manual states that the 756 is identical to the 755 and the 856 is identical to the 855. All repair procedures for the 855 apply to the 856. Same for the 655, 756, and 856—though late‑model changes (after the 855 and 955 were introduced) do not apply to those older models. The manual is explicit about which serial numbers and models are included.

Before you touch a wrench, check the serial number location diagrams in Group 25 of Section 10. That’s another thing aftermarket books leave out: where the damn serial plate is on a 755.

FAQ

Is this manual suitable for a beginner?
It’s written for an experienced technician, but a home garage guy with a torque wrench and patience can follow the steps. Start with the safety messages in Section 10.
What torque values are listed?
All of them. Group 15 in Section 10 gives the standard torque values for bolts, plus specific torque specs in each repair group.
Does the electrical section cover the 40-amp alternator?
Group 15 in Section 40 walks through disassembly, inspection, and assembly of the Nippon Denso 40‑amp alternator. Includes rotor and stator test procedures.
Can I use this manual for the 856 if the cover only says 655–756?
Yes. The foreword explains the 856 is mechanically identical to the 855. All 855 procedures apply to the 856. Same for the 756 and 755.

Look, I’ve been turning wrenches since before you were born. I’ve got no time for aftermarket manuals that leave out the bleed procedure and have you chasing parts you don’t need. This John Deere Technical Manual has the factory torque values, the cross‑section drawings, and the safety warnings. Access the Factory Manual from AutoRepairManuals and keep it on your tablet or print the pages you need. You’ll thank me when the hydrostatic transmission purrs instead of whines.

If you need a refresher on how a Manual Transmission works before tackling the hydrostatic unit, fine—but this manual assumes you know the basics. The same goes for the Manual Transmission fundamentals in older tractors; the hydrostatic is a different animal.
