Description
JLG 534D-6, 534D-6T, 522, 524 2000 Operators Manual

Over my 28 years in the shop, I’ve seen more machines come in with stripped threads and blown seals because somebody used aftermarket specs than I care to count. This JLG 534D-6, 534D-6T, 522, 524 2000 Operators Manual is the real deal – factory-issued by JLG in December 2000, covering serial numbers 0277001 (522/524) and 0588001 (534D-6/534D-6T). If you skip the OEM torque chart on page 26 of this manual, you are guessing. And guessing on a telehandler brake system or drive train gets people hurt. Period.
This isn’t some third-party reprint with faded scans. It’s the original 43-page PDF, the same one JLG shipped with the machine. I’ve built a career on using factory documentation, and this manual is exactly what you need for safe operation and basic maintenance. No fluff, no guesswork – just the specs that keep a 10,000-pound material handler working.
Brake System and Drive Train – Factory Procedure
The Brake System chapter (page 18 in the TOC) covers exactly what JLG requires: parking brake adjustment, service brake checks, and the correct fluid specs. Aftermarket manuals often skip the part about bleeding the brake circuit on these Gradall models – this one doesn’t. You also get the full Drive Train section (page 20), including the torque converter, Manual Transmission lubrication, and axle inspection. Follow these steps in order, and you won’t end up with a brake drag that cooks the pads.
Torque Chart – Not a Suggestion
Page 38 of this manual has the Torque Chart – I’ve seen some printouts that list “universal” values, but those will get you a loose bolt or a snapped fastener. This chart gives you the exact ft-lb for each grade of bolt used on the 534D-6, 534D-6T, 522, and 524. Use it. I torque every critical fastener to these numbers – wheels, boom pivot pins, mounting bolts for the Engine cradle.
Engine Operation and Warm-Up Checks
The Engine Operation section (page 13) goes through cold-start procedures, glow plug usage, and daily inspection. There’s a subsection called “Checks & Services Before Starting Engine” (page 12) that lists coolant level, hydraulic oil, and belt tension. Don’t fire up a diesel without completing that checklist – a dry turbo can fail in seconds.
Nomenclature and Decals – What They Mean
Pages 4 through 7 break down the Nomenclature and Safety Highlights, plus all Decals Inside Cab and Outside Cab. I’ve had operators tell me “I didn’t see that sticker” – the manual shows exactly where each decal is located and what it warns. If you’re training a new guy, make him read this section. It covers load capacity placards, operating angle limits, and emergency exit procedures.
Who Needs This Manual and Why
If you own or operate any of these JLG telehandlers – 522, 524, 534D-6, or 534D-6T – you need this file on a tablet in the cab. It’s not a service manual (that’s a separate book), but it covers everything an operator or a home-garage mechanic needs for routine checks, lubrication intervals, and emergency moving procedures. I’ve used the Moving Handler in Emergency section (page 40) after a hydraulic line burst on a job site – saved me two hours of head-scratching.
Beginners: do not skip the Safety Highlights (page 5). It includes the warning about overhead obstructions and tail swing radius. Professionals: the Recommended Lubricants & Capacities chart (page 35) gives you the exact grade for transmission, hydraulic tank, and engine oil. None of that “check owner’s manual” vagueness – it’s all right there.
Source Authenticity – OEM vs. Aftermarket
I’ve tested aftermarket operators manuals against this one. The differences are dangerous. Aftermarket copies often omit the Obtaining Hydraulic Oil Sample for Analysis procedure (page 30), which is critical for catching contamination early. They also screw up the Decals Outside Cab locations – one reprint I saw listed a decal on the left fender that belongs on the boom. JLG’s original document, scanned from the 2000 print run, is verified. This is the same file used by dealers at Gradall Division in New Philadelphia, Ohio. If you want to see what a proper Manual Transmission service interval looks like, this manual has it.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Does this manual cover the hydraulic system repair?
- No. This operators manual covers daily checks, lubrication, and emergency procedures. For pump rebuilds or cylinder seals, you need the service manual. Look for the related manual above.
- Can I use this on a 534D-6T with a different serial number?
- This edition covers 534D-6/534D-6T starting from serial number 0588001. If your machine is older than that, the torque specs and decal locations may differ. Check the serial number plate on the frame before relying on any section – especially the brake system and engine operation chapters. JLG updated some hydraulic line routing after 2001. If your serial number doesn’t fall within the range printed on page 2, contact Gradall directly or order a manual for your specific range. Incorrect decal locations can lead to overloading the machine. I know it’s extra paperwork, but skipping this step has cost shops thousands in cracked booms.
Whether you’re running a fleet of telehandlers or wrenching on one in your own barn, this factory operators manual gives you the exact information the engineers wrote. Don’t trust a photocopy that might be from a different model year. Access the Factory Manual now and put the right specs in your hand – before you touch a wrench.
