Description
Jinma 250, 254 Repair Manual – What You Need on the Bench

I have torqued more head bolts than most people have hot meals. So when a guy rolls a Jinma 250 or 254 into my shop with a clutch that won’t release or a front axle that clunks, I reach for the factory book. Not some aftermarket pamphlet with guessed torque values. This Jinma 250, 254 Repair Manual is the real deal. 81 pages of original OEM documentation. If you are trying to keep a 25 hp range tractor running, you want the same specs the factory issued to dealers.
Engine Control Mechanism – Page 2
First section in the book covers the engine control linkage. Throttle lever, governor arm, stop cable adjustments. Page 2 lays out every rod end and spring clip. You need charge pressure? Not on that page, but the manual gives you the sequence for tightening the rocker shaft support bolts. I’ve seen guys snap bolts because they used a generic spec meant for a Ford. Don’t be that guy. Use the factory numbers.
Dual Stage Clutch: 8-Inch vs. 9-Inch
Two separate sections: one for the 8-inch dual stage clutch (page 4), and one for the 9-inch (page 6). The difference matters – the 254 uses the bigger clutch. Page 4 shows the release bearing clearance of 0.04 to 0.06 inches. If you set it wrong, either the PTO won’t engage or the tractor creeps in neutral. The manual gives you the shim thickness in thousandths. That’s the difference between a chattering clutch and a smooth shift.
What Does the Front Axle Section Cover?
Front Axle I on page 8 is for the manual steering version. Front Axle for Hydraulic Steering II starts on page 11. Two different kingpin setups. Page 11 includes the steering cylinder removal – seven fasteners including the locknut. Ordinary book would skip the details. This one shows the ball stud orientation and cotter pin size. I’ve had to torch off a ball joint because someone used a US-standard cotter pin in a metric hole. The manual uses metric locknuts throughout.
Brake and Operation Mechanism – Disc vs. Shoe
Disc-type brakes on page 35, shoe-type on page 37. The 254 often has disc brakes. Page 35 details the brake disc thickness wear limit of 0.24 inches. You cannot fudge that – a thin disc will crack. The manual includes the spring tension for the return springs. Page 37 shows the shoe adjustment, which is a different procedure. If you mix them up, you’ll have a pedal that goes to the floor.
3 Reasons You Need OEM Documentation for These Tractors
Aftermarket manuals for Chinese tractors are a gamble. Reason one: the exploded diagrams are photocopied from original source but later re-edited – clearances get lost. Reason two: torque specs listed in Nm but converted wrong from the factory kgf-m. Reason three: aftermarket often leaves out the [Manual Transmission] section entirely – see Manual Transmission for a general overview, but the Jinma book includes the specific gearbox with double-speed drive on page 19. That section explains the synchronizer shim selection. You get that only from the OEM print. The 81 pages of this manual are not a condensed summary; they are the full factory document used at assembly.
Shuttle Shift and Gearbox Assembly
Page 26 covers the shuttle shift mechanism – the lever, shift forks, and detent spring. If your 254 grinds going into reverse, the shuttle shift detent may be worn. Page 30 and 31 list the gear assembly with tooth counts. Page 24 gives the drive gearbox cover gasket thickness. I’ve stacked two gaskets trying to fix an oil leak – the manual says single 0.020 inch gasket only. Stop guessing.
The last section shows the Roll-over Protective Structure (ROPS). Page number from the bookmark – it’s near the end. Not the most used page, but if you ever have to replace a cab mount, the bolt grade is specified. Don’t use hardware store bolts for ROPS. The manual tells you the grade and torque.
You are working on a Jinma 250 or 254. This is the exact document the factory used. It covers the clutch, the front axle, the brake systems, and the manual transmission. Skip the third-party PDFs. You want the 81 pages of original OEM data. Access the Factory Manual now and keep it on a tablet in the shop. That’s how you get the job done right.
