Description
International Truck And Engine 5000i, 9200i, 9400i, 9900i 2002 Wiring Diagram

You are chasing an electrical ghost on a 2002 International 9900i with a Cummins ISX. The aftermarket diagram you bought shows a relay pinout that doesn’t match anything under the dash. This is where the actual factory wiring diagram separates the guys who get it fixed in an hour from the ones who spend a whole afternoon swapping parts. The International Truck And Engine 5000i, 9200i, 9400i, 9900i 2002 Wiring Diagram is 88 pages of OEM electrical circuit diagrams published November 1, 2002. No reprints. No third-party data. Just the schematics International used on the assembly line.
I have seen a lot of wiring diagrams in my 28 years turning wrenches. Most aftermarket ones use generic symbols and skip details like ground stud locations or the exact pinout for a sealed relay. This manual gives you chapter 1.6 – Relay Pinout, Function Data & Sealed Relay on page 6. That alone will save you from ordering the wrong relay or back-probing the wrong wire. The first chapter also includes a Circuit Identification Chart (pages 1-2) and Schematic Symbols (page 5). You don’t need to interpret some random artist’s idea of a wire; the symbols match SAE standards, which you can verify against SAE International Standards.
12 Volt Power Distribution Circuit Diagrams
Chapter 2 breaks down every power feed in the truck. Start feed, accessory, battery B1 and B2, the 3+1 deep-cycle battery system, ground adapter composites, ignition, and panel lights. Each diagram has its own page with the exact wire colors, connector IDs, and splice locations. Need the ground stud composite for the 9400i? Pages 8-9 in that chapter. The diagram shows each stud, its wire gauge, and where it terminates. You don’t guess which stud is for the ECM versus the cab accessories – it’s all labeled.
Most electrical problems I run into are bad grounds. This manual gives you two full pages for ground stud composites (chapter 2.8 and 2.9). That is more ground detail than most chassis wiring books offer for an entire vehicle. If you own a 5000i or 9200i and keep blowing the panel light fuse, the composite on page 11 maps every lamp and its ground path. Fix it once.
Does This Manual Cover the I6 HEUI Engine?
Yes. Chapter 4 – Engine Systems has dedicated sections for the I6 HEUI engine, including cruise control (page 8), engine brake (page 9), engine controls (page 10), module power & ground (page 11), and the accelerator/BAP/ambient air temp sensor system (page 12). Also covers the surge tank and exhaust brake solenoid on page 13. For the Caterpillar C10 through C16 and Cummins ISM/ISX, the same chapter gives separate diagrams for cruise, engine brake, and engine controls. If you’re working on a 9900i with a Cat C15, you get the engine brake wiring with the exact solenoid part numbers and wire colors. No aftermarket guessing.
5 Chapters of Engine System Wiring
The manual does not stop at the engine. Chapter 5 covers Horton and Kysor engine fans – with and without manual override switches, with and without A/C. Chapter 6 gives you all the gauges: oil pressure, oil temp, water temp, fuel level, pyrometer, speedometer, tachometer, transmission oil temp, voltmeter, manifold pressure, and ether start. Each gauge has its own circuit diagram. That means if your 9400i’s water temp gauge pegs to hot when it’s cold, you trace the sender wire through the schematic on page 5 of chapter 6 instead of pulling apart the whole dash.
Chapter 7 covers warning lights: air suspension release, engine oil pressure, water temp, low air pressure, low fuel, power divider lock, differential lock. Every light gets a dedicated page with the bulb type and circuit path. Chapter 8 – Cab Accessories goes into everything else: cigar lighter, clock, electric windows, defroster fans, windshield wipers with intermittent and wash, horn, mirror lights and heated mirrors, motorized mirrors, CB power, radio, speakers, spare switches, electric locks, Intervision display, Eaton VORAD collision avoidance, temperature/compass display, Road Relay IV, and heated seat. That is 21 pages of cab accessory wiring. You need the wiring for the right motorized mirror on a 5000i? Page 9 in chapter 8.
Don’t waste time with a generic manual that skips the collision avoidance module or the heated seat. This one includes them.
Check the Relay Pinout Before You Solder
Page 6 of chapter 1 is one of the most useful pages in the whole 88-page document. It lists the relay pinout, function data, and sealed relay specifications. I have watched technicians toast a body controller because they used a relay with the wrong coil polarity. The factory diagram tells you exactly which pins are coil, normally open, normally closed, and common. It also gives the sealed relay package dimensions so you can order the correct replacement from your parts house. Pair this with the International Truck CF 500, CF 600 Wiring Diagram – OEM Factory Manual if you run a mixed fleet of International chassis.
Another critical section: the 12-volt charging and cranking system in chapter 3. It covers setups with Cat and Cummins engines, with and without overcrank protection, and the I6 HEUI with overcrank protection. If your 9200i cranks slow or not at all, start with the diagram on page 19 (chapter 3.1) that shows the starter solenoid feed, battery connections, and alternator output. The wiring diagram includes the start feed circuit from chapter 2.1, so you can trace the entire path from ignition switch to starter motor.
Fan Circuits: Horton and Kysor with Manual Override
Engine fan problems are common on these trucks. The manual separates the fan wiring by engine type: Cat C10-C16, Cummins ISM/ISX, and I6 HEUI. Each includes the A/C clutch signal and manual fan override switch. If your 9900i’s fan runs full speed all the time, you can check the override switch wiring against the diagram in chapter 5.2 (Cummins) or 5.1 (Cat). The schematics show the fan solenoid grounding path and the engine control module output. No more swapping fan clutches when the real issue is a shorted wire.
For the International Truck 5000, 9200, 9400, 9900 Electrical Schematic – OEM Factory Wi – note that this wiring diagram is the exact same source but focused on the later model year changes. If you need the earlier 2001 wiring, check that manual. But for 2002 chassis built after November 4, this is the one.
I trust factory documentation because it comes from the engineers who designed the trucks. The wiring diagrams in this manual use the same circuit identification codes that International stamped on the harness labels. When you see “B1” on the diagram, you know it goes to battery 1. Compare that to an aftermarket book that calls the same wire “BAT+”. Small difference, but chasing a short with mismatched labels costs billable hours. Every diagram in this 88-page manual follows the SAE standard for schematic symbols, which is why I recommend you brush up on SAE International Standards if you are new to reading these drawings. It will make the relay pinout and symbol chart on page 5-6 even clearer.
A quick rundown of what you get in the 88 pages: 11 pages of instructions and charts, 11 pages of 12-volt power distribution, 8 pages of charging and cranking, 13 pages of engine systems, 3 pages of fans, 12 pages of gauges and systems, 8 pages of warning lights, 21 pages of cab accessories. That covers every electrical system on the 5000i, 9200i, 9400i, and 9900i models built after November 4, 2002. If you work on a 2002 International with an I6 HEUI or a Cat C16, you have the correct diagrams.
For more International truck wiring, see the International Truck CF 500 CF 600 2008 Electrical Schematic Manual – different chassis, same factory approach.
One last thing: do not try to use this for the 2001 model year. The start date for this manual is November 4, 2002. International changed the electrical architecture significantly around that time. Using the wrong diagram will waste your time. But if you have a 2002 truck, this is the only wiring diagram you need on the bench.
- Does this cover the 9900i with the I6 HEUI engine?
- Yes. Chapter 4 includes I6 HEUI engine controls, cruise control, engine brake, and module power/ground.
- What if I need the wiring for the Eaton VORAD collision avoidance system?
- That’s covered in chapter 8, Cab Accessories, pages 17-18. The manual includes specific diagrams for the collision avoidance module, power and ground, and interface with the rest of the chassis electrical system. This is factory data, not generic. The diagrams show the VORAD control module, radar sensor, display unit, and all associated wiring. If your system is not communicating, you can check the power feed from the CB power circuit (page 11) and the ground path. There is also a note about the VORAD harness routing to avoid electromagnetic interference from the alternator. This level of detail is what you pay for when you buy an OEM manual instead of a third-party compilation.
Access the Factory Manual now and get the correct electrical data for your 2002 International 5000i, 9200i, 9400i, or 9900i. Stop swapping parts blind – trace the circuit with the real schematic.
