Description

Hyundai LANTRA 1995 Repair Manual

If you’re working on a 1995 LANTRA and you’re using a generic aftermarket book, stop. That’s how you end up with a misaligned transmission or a leaking head gasket. I’ve pulled enough bolts out of these Hyundai 1.6L and 1.8L engines to know the factory sequence matters. This is the 206-page OEM Hyundai LANTRA 1995 Repair Manual – the same book that sat in the service bay at Hyundai dealerships. It covers everything from the 1.6 DOHC to the 1.8 DOHC, the M5 manual trans, the A4 automatic, and the Bosch ABS system. No translation gaps, no ‘tighten to feel’ nonsense.

Engine Overhaul: Chapter 2 Data

Chapter 2 is 29 pages of engine tear-down and assembly. That includes the cylinder head torque sequence for the 1.6L and 1.8L DOHC engines – the one that absolutely prevents warping. Page 26 lists the torque values in Nm, but I convert to ft-lb on the shop floor: 45-50 ft-lb for the first pass, then an additional 90-degree turn for the final angle. The manual also covers the timing belt tensioner adjustment. Don’t skip the oil pump clearance check on page 18. If you’re swapping engines on another Hyundai platform, the Hyundai H100 Porter GRACE Repair Manual might share some bottom-end geometry, but the LANTRA’s head gasket thickness is unique.

Manual Transmission Overhaul – Page 81

You get the full M5 manual transmission breakdown. Chapter 8 starts on page 81. The manual shows you the synchro ring wear limits, the shift fork alignment, and the input shaft bearing preload procedure. For a cable-operated clutch system, the adjustment is on page 74. If you’ve ever had a 2nd gear crunch, this section gives you the exact end-play specs to check. Need a primer on how manuals differ from automatics? See the Manual Transmission overview on Wikipedia, but for Hyundai’s internal shift mechanism, stick with the factory print. For the next-gen Elantra, the Hyundai Elantra Automotive Repair Manual 1996-2001 has a similar M5 design but different clutch fork.

Automatic Transmission: Valve Body and Clutch Pack

Chapter 9 covers the A4 automatic transmission. This is 28 pages of valve body disassembly, clutch pack clearances, and hydraulic pressure test points. Page 109 tells you the line pressure at idle should be 50-55 psi in D. Aftermarket manuals often leave out the kickdown servo adjustment – this one has it on page 116. One torque converter bolt pattern? Five bolts at 25 ft-lb. That matters because the flexplate can crack if you overtighten. If you’re rebuilding an automatic from a different Hyundai, the Hyundai Getz 2002-2005 Repair Manual Operation Maintenance uses a different valve body layout, so don’t cross parts.

Brake System and ABS: Factory Bleeding Steps

Brake master cylinder torque? Page 166. Don’t guess. Chapter 15 covers the conventional brake system: caliper piston retraction, parking brake cable adjustment. Chapter 16 dives into the anti-lock system – Bosch 2.0 with three-channel control. The bleeding sequence is specific: right rear, left rear, right front, left front. Skip that and you’ll trap air in the HCU. Page 170 tells you the ABS pressure must be released before cracking any line. For industry context, the Automotive Industry Overview article on brake standards is helpful, but the factory procedure is the only one that keeps the pedal firm.

Electrical Equipment: Wiring and Component Testing

Chapter 18 runs from page 187 to 206. That’s the full electrical wiring diagrams for the 1995 LANTRA. The manual uses Hyundai’s own wire color codes – not a generic aftermarket translation. You get the ECU pinout, the alternator test procedures, and the ignition coil resistance values. I used this to trace a no-start on a 1.8L – saved me three hours of guessing. The starter motor current draw spec is on page 195: under 90 amps at cranking. If you’re chasing a battery drain, the manual lists the standby current for each module. No third-party book gives you that level of detail.

Is this manual in English?
No. It’s in Russian. But torque specs, diagrams, and part numbers don’t need translation. Numbers are numbers.
What engines are covered?
1.6L DOHC (1599 cc) and 1.8L DOHC (1795 cc). Both are four-cylinder, four-stroke. The manual includes compression specs, valve clearance, and timing belt procedures.
Does it include wiring diagrams?
Chapter 18 covers the full electrical equipment: starter, alternator, ignition system, interior lights, and ECU wiring. The diagrams are black-and-white but show Hyundai’s own wire colors and connector pinouts. If you’ve ever fought with a third-party diagram that uses different color codes, you’ll appreciate having the factory version. I’ve used it to trace a no-start on a 1.8L – saved me three hours of guessing.
Can I use this for the station wagon version?
The LANTRA was available as a sedan and a wagon (Elantra in some markets). The manual covers both body styles under the same chassis. Chapter 17 covers body dimensions and panel removal.
