Description
If you’re pulling a mast on a Hyster A513, A514, A613, A614, or A702 and you don’t have the 2014 Service Manual in your hand, you’re gambling with someone’s safety. I’ve seen guys take a fork off using a generic guide and end up with a carriage that binds because the bolt torque wasn’t right. That’s a $3,000 mistake before you add labor. This manual is 194 pages of factory procedures written for trained techs. It’s not a highlight reel.

Mast Repairs Covered: 2- and 3-Stage Masts for A513–A702
The manual opens on page 1 with “Safety Procedures When Working Near Mast” – that’s your first clue this isn’t a highlight reel. It then dives into mast repairs for S4.0, 4.5, 5.5FT, S5.5FTS, H4.0FT5/FT6, H4.5FTS5, H6.0FT, H7.0FT, and the E3.50-5.50XL series. If your lift truck serial number falls into the A513, A514, A613, A614, A702 range, you’re covered. Also includes B-series and others listed on the cover. 194 pages of focused content – no wasted space.
Fork Removal: Two Procedures Based on Build Date
One thing that separates factory manuals from aftermarket copies: they account for production changes. The fork replacement section splits procedures for trucks not equipped with a fork positioner or equipped with one before August 2012, and a separate procedure for trucks built after August 2012. Miss that detail and you’ll be chasing hydraulic leaks or bent rails. The manual also covers the checks after installation – page 7 and 8 – including specific measurements you must verify. Skip those checks and you’ll be redoing the job next week.
Safety Warnings from Page 2 of the Manual
Page 2 lists the safety precautions. Disconnect the battery connector before any repair. Use correct blocks. Always use Hyster Approved parts – that’s in bold in the manual. I’ve seen aftermarket manuals say “use equivalent parts” which is vague. This manual states: “Replacement parts must meet or exceed the specifications of the original equipment manufacturer.” That’s not lawyer talk – that’s a spec. And they remind you to fasten a DO NOT OPERATE tag. I’ve had guys ignore that and get run over. Read page 2. Every time.
What Makes This OEM Manual Different from a Reprint?
Aftermarket manuals often skip the “Integral Sideshift Carriage Repair” section that begins on page 21. This manual gives you the full sequence: remove, disassemble, clean and inspect, assemble, install. The “Clean and Inspect” step (page 24) tells you what to look for on the wear pads and bushings. That’s not in a generic guide. If you’re working with Hyster Cylinder Repair Manual Mast S/N A513-B514 you already know the value of factory data. Pair this manual with Hyster Gasoline Fuel System GM 4.3L Engine Manual or Hyster Brake System Service Manual 1800 SRM 1247 for a full shop library. And if you need background on transmission types, check Manual Transmission basics. But for mast work, this is the one.
Integral Sideshift Carriage: Clean and Inspect Before Assembly
When you get into the sideshift carriage repair, the manual walks you through disconnecting the hydraulic quick disconnect hoses (page 20) before removal. That’s a step that seems obvious but gets skipped. Then the disassembly on page 21 shows the order of pins and bushings. The “Assemble” step calls for specific torque – not “tighten securely” but actual values. You won’t find that in a PDF that was scanned from a third-party source. This is a direct factory PDF, part number 1627340. The official Hyster Service Manual updates may be available from your dealer, but this 2014 edition is the baseline every shop should have.
- Does this manual cover the A703 model?
- No. This manual specifically covers A513, A514, A613, A614, A702. See the cover page for the full list.
- What if my lift truck was built after August 2012 and has a fork positioner?
- The manual has separate procedures for pre-August 2012 and post-August 2012 for fork removal and installation. On page 4, you’ll find the specific steps for trucks manufactured after August 2012 with fork positioner. That includes disconnecting hydraulic quick disconnect hoses, removing the fork retainer attaching bolts, and pulling the pin on the fork positioner. Don’t mix these up, or you’ll damage the positioner linkage. The torque sequence for the mounting bolts is also different. Always verify the build date on your truck’s data plate before starting. If the plate is missing, contact your Hyster dealer for the serial number lookup. The manual also provides checks on page 8 that include verifying fork level and lateral play – those tolerances matter for safe operation.
You’ve got the truck in the bay, the mast is off, and you need the right data. Don’t waste time hunting for specs that may or may not be correct. This is factory-verified, 194 pages, with torque values and procedures that match what Hyster trained techs use. Access the Factory Manual now and get back to work with the right information.
