Description

Hino FD1J, GD1J, FG1J, FL1J, FM1J Workshop Manual

Hino FD1J, GD1J, FG1J, FL1J, FM1J Workshop Manual cover - OEM factory service manual

If you are working on a Hino FD1J, GD1J, FG1J, FL1J, or FM1J truck, you need specs that are not guesses. I have seen shops lose billable hours because someone used a reprint manual with the wrong clutch release bearing preload. This Hino FD1J, GD1J, FG1J, FL1J, FM1J Workshop Manual runs 1223 pages of factory data. No third-party condensation. You get the same pages the dealer techs had in the 90s.

The J08C-TI engine is the heart of these chassis. The manual covers every torque turn on that block, from cylinder head bolts to main bearing caps. Need the clutch master cylinder stroke? It is in the CLUTCH CONTROL section. Want the brake air booster with ABS? That is in SERVICE BRAKE. Every page came from Hino Motors, Ltd. – not some aftermarket house that re-typeset the drawings and lost the decimal points.

1223 Pages – What You Actually Get

Open the index and you find 13 thumb-indexed sections. The CHAPTER REFERENCES chart on page 2 maps each model to its chapter numbers. General introduction, clutch main unit (CS350 and CS380), clutch control, transmission main units for LJ06S, MF06S, Eaton FS6109/FS8209, Fuller RT8908LL, and the Allison MD3060P/MD3560P automatic. That is six different Manual Transmission builds covered in one book. Plus P.T.O. units for each transmission family. And that is just the powertrain.

Propeller shafts are split into four assemblies – LF0932, MC1040, HD1050, HE1160. Differential carriers from SH13 up through THD17. Brake equipment is split between air-over-hydraulic and full air brake models, with separate ABS sections for WABCO make. ES Start (Easy & Smooth Start System) has its own chapter. Exhaust brake, retarder brake, steering equipment, front axle (LF366, LF458, MF67I), rear axle, suspension, chassis frame, cab, and a full electrical equipment section. You do not flip between three manuals to rebuild one truck.

Transmission Overhaul: Covering LJ06S, MF06S, Eaton, Fuller, and Allison

Transmission work kills a lot of DIY jobs because the clearances are factory-only. This manual gives you the input shaft, output shaft, gear, and counter shaft breakdowns for the LJ06S and MF06S. It includes the gear shift housing disassembly and the power shift linkage adjustments. For the Eaton FS6109 and FS8209, you get the full Manual Transmission assembly procedure with lubrication specs. The Fuller RT8908LL is there too. And the Allison automatic – the torque converter removal and planetary gearset clearances are all from Hino’s engineering team. Do not guess the end-play on the output shaft. The manual gives it.

Clutch and Brake Systems – Factory Torque Specs Only

Clutch main units come in CS350 and CS380 versions. The CLUTCH ASSEMBLY sections show every bolt location with torque values. The CLUTCH CONTROL chapter covers the pedal and release unit, master cylinder, and booster. Brake equipment is where most aftermarket manuals screw up. With air-over-hydraulic and full air brake variants, the valve locations matter. The SERVICE BRAKE section lists the pressure governor, air dryer, safety valve, brake valve (with ES Start), protection valve, quick release valve, brake air booster (with and without ABS), relay valve, spring brake control valve, spring brake chamber, and wheel brake assemblies for FD and GD models. There is a cut valve and slack adjuster section for auto adjusters. Every bolt on the wheel brake slack adjuster has a torque spec. You do not need to call the dealer for that.

OEM vs Aftermarket: Don’t Trust the Knockoffs

I have held reprint manuals that skipped the ES START control valve schematic. That valve controls the air assist for hill starts. Miss one O-ring groove and the truck rolls back into a customer’s car. The original Hino workshop manual has the full ES START section with the control valve breakdown. The ABS sections – both standard and WABCO make – include front and rear wheel brake disassembly. The wiring diagrams in the ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT chapter are from Hino’s electrical engineers, not traced from a blurry photocopy. You pay for accuracy, not convenience.

Common Questions and Answers

Does this manual include the J08C-TI engine specs?
Pages 1-2 mention the J08C-TI as the applicable engine. The manual covers chassis, transmission, brakes, steering, axles, suspension, cab, and electrical. For full engine internal repair, Hino produced a separate J08C-TI engine workshop manual (Pub. No. S5-YJ08E17A). This chassis manual references that book but does not duplicate the engine overhaul.
Can I use this for the GD1J with a different axle ratio?
Yes. The model range FD1J, GD1J, FG1J, FL1J, FM1J share the same chassis manual. Differential carrier sections cover SH13, SH14, SH16, SH17, and THD17. You get the correct shim selection for each carrier.
Are torque specs in lb-ft or Nm?
Imperial units. The manual uses lb-ft for fasteners and psi for air pressures. No metric conversions – Hino published this for the North American market.
What about the brake air booster with ABS?
Covered. The SERVICE BRAKE chapter has separate sub-sections for brake air booster without ABS and with ABS. Also includes the WABCO ABS section with front and rear wheel brake procedures.
