Description
Ford NAA Service Manual – Factory Specs for 1953-1954 “Golden Jubilee” Tractors

You own a Ford NAA tractor. Maybe it’s the 1953 Golden Jubilee. Maybe a 1954. Either way, you’ve got a machine that’s been running for seventy years, and the aftermarket manuals are garbage. They leave out the step where you drop the camshaft thrust plate into the oil pan. They use generic torque values that strip threads. I’ve seen it. This Service Manual is the original factory document – 45 pages of the exact procedures Ford issued. Brake adjustment, engine rebuild, hydraulic system troubleshooting – it’s all in there. If you’re pulling the cylinder head or setting valve lash, you need the factory spec printed in this book. Not a guess. Not a forum post.
Brake Adjustment and Shoe Replacement
Brakes on a tractor see mud, water, and years of neglect. The manual walks you through adjusting the bands (page 93) and replacing the shoes (page 94). It gives the clearance numbers that keep the shoes from dragging or locking. Ignore those specs, and you’ll be pulling the axle again within a season. The procedure is paragraph-based – Ford wrote it for a mechanic who doesn’t need hand-holding, so read each step twice. You’ll find the brake section after the belt pulley chapter. Use a 1/2-inch torque wrench on the anchor bolts – the book doesn’t call out a torque value for every fastener, but the adjustment specs are dead-on.
Cooling System Components – Radiator, Thermostat, Water Pump
Overheating kills a flathead four faster than any other failure. The cooling chapter covers radiator removal (page 45), thermostat replacement (page 47), and water pump overhaul (page 46). Pay attention to the water pump impeller clearance – aftermarket pumps often skim that dimension. The manual also tells you the thermostat opening temperature. Don’t trust a generic 190°F thermostat; the factory spec is lower. Flush the block with the radiator removed – the manual mentions it in the procedure. Use distilled water. No shortcuts.
Engine Overhaul – Camshaft, Crankshaft, and Cylinder Head Specs
This is where the manual earns its keep. The engine section covers everything from cylinder head R&R (page 16) to crankshaft and bearings (page 33). If you’re rebuilding, you need the camshaft end-play spec, the connecting rod bearing clearance, and the torque sequence for the head. The manual has it. It also details cam follower removal (page 20) and valve rotators (page 19). I’ve seen guys crush the camshaft bearings because they used a generic driver kit – the factory procedure uses a different tool. Read the section on timing gear cover (page 22) before you remove the front oil seal (page 34). If you skip steps, you’ll be chasing oil leaks for a month. The crankshaft oil seal replacement is on page 34, rear seal on page 35. Both require precise installation depth – the manual gives it.
Electrical System – Ignition, Generator, Starting Motor
Old 6-volt systems are touchy. The electrical chapter covers generator and regulator testing (page 50), starting motor overhaul (page 51), and ignition timing (page 52). The distributor overhaul procedure (page 53) includes the correct breaker-point gap and dwell. Don’t use a modern electronic conversion unless you understand the timing marks – the manual shows flywheel timing marks (page 52). Battery ignition timing is also on page 52. If your tractor won’t start after a rebuild, trace back through the wiring diagram buried in this chapter. The generator regulator adjustment is paragraph 50 – set the voltage cutout correctly or you’ll boil the battery.
What Makes This Manual Better Than Aftermarket Reprints
Aftermarket manuals are scanned and cleaned up – sometimes. This one is a direct digital copy of the original Ford document. The page numbers match the factory binding. The illustrations are crisp. I’ve compared this to a $20 reprint; the reprint misaligns the hydraulic control linkage adjustment diagram on page 118. That kind of error costs you hours. This manual is the real thing. If you need a companion parts guide, check out the Ford 9N 2N 8N NAA Parts Catalog 1939-1953 – AutoRepairManuals or the Ford 600, 800, NAA, 501, 700 Parts Catalog (1953-59) 310 Pages for fastener sizes and part numbers. For later models, the Ford 2100, 2110, 3100, 4100, 4110 Service Manual – Pre-1975 covers a different generation. - Does this manual cover the Sherman transmission?
- Yes. Pages 65-66 cover Sherman transmission assembly, R&R, and overhaul.
- What torque values are listed for the cylinder head?
- The engine section provides the tightening sequence and a torque range (page 16). It does not give a single number; it specifies tightening in steps – first to 30 ft-lb, then to 50 ft-lb, then a final turn angle. Aftermarket manuals often skip the angle step. Use the factory data. The crankshaft main bearing cap torque is also listed on page 33. If you need front axle pivot pin torque, check page 2. The manual is thorough but expects you to read the entire engine chapter before starting. Skip the valve spring installed height measurement (page 18) and you’ll have valve float. I’ve seen it.
You can spend a weekend chasing down a misadjusted brake or a leaking rear oil seal. Or you can spend ten minutes looking at the factory page. The choice is yours. Access the Factory Manual and get back to work.
