Description
Ford 600, 601, 800, 801, 841 Service Manual – The Factory Print You Need on the Bench

You have a Ford 600, 601, 800, 801, or 841 on the lift – or up on blocks in the yard – and the last thing you need is a generic aftermarket diagram that swaps cylinder head torque for a lawnmower. I have seen guys pull head bolts on a 172 cu. in. engine using a paperback book that gave the wrong sequence, then wonder why the gasket blew at idle. Ford 600, 601, 800, 801, 841 Service Manual is the only document Ford put its name on for these machines. 143 pages of step-by-step repair procedures, required tool lists, and safety warnings that came from the engineer who designed the water pump. If you want to keep a 1955–1962 tractor running without making a scrap pile, this is the file that stops the guesswork.
Engine Overhaul: Cylinder Head and Crankshaft Specs
Page 85 gets you the cylinder head removal and installation procedure for both gasoline and LP-Gas engines. You will find the exact order for loosening and torquing the head bolts – not a generic five-step, but a sequence that accounts for the cast-iron block’s expansion. The crankshaft and main bearing section on page 109 gives you clearances and torque values in foot-pounds, not Newton-meters converted by some third-party editor. The manual also covers the camshaft, cam followers, tappets, and rocker arms in their own chapters. Need to check connecting rod bearing clearance? That is on page 108. Pistons, rings, and pins are broken out separately starting at page 100. Do not trust a YouTube video that says “it’s all the same.” It is not.
What Does the Manual Cover for the Fuel System?
Fuel system work on these tractors means dealing with gasoline, LP-Gas, or diesel variants. The carburetor section starts on page 118 for gasoline and page 121 for LP-Gas. Diesel fuel system gets its own treatment: quick checks on page 128, filters and bleeding on page 129, nozzle service on page 131, injection pump R&R on page 139. If you have a diesel 144 cu. in. engine, you need the injection timing specs from that chapter – they are not in any aftermarket compilation I have seen. The manual includes the governor adjustment for non-diesel engines on page 146. Missing that step can cause a runaway idle that shakes the whole driveline apart.
3 Transmission Types Covered – Four-Speed, Five-Speed, Select-O-Speed
This one manual covers the four-speed (page 185), five-speed (page 195), and Select-O-Speed (page 218) transmissions. Each gets its own removal, overhaul, and adjustment procedures. The five-speed section alone includes shifter rails and forks (page 197), main drive gear and shaft (page 201), countershaft (page 204), and a trouble-shooting chart starting page 229. The Select-O-Speed section explains the hydraulic control valve R&R on page 238 and pump R&R on page 241. That is factory-level detail you will not find in a reprint that scanned a third-generation photocopy. If you are rebuilding a combination transmission (page 170) or a reversing transmission (page 178), the procedures are here with torque values for every snap ring and bearing.
Cooling System: Radiator and Pump Procedures
Cooling system failures on these tractors usually come from cavitation or a seized water pump. The manual shows you the radiator removal (page 150) and the water pump R&R and overhaul (page 153). The pump overhaul includes bearing clearance checks and seal replacement steps that prevent a repeat failure in six months. Do not skip the thermostat test procedure – it is in the same section. I have seen shops throw a new pump on a 601 without checking the impeller gap, then blame the radiator when it still overheats. The factory manual gives you the gap spec. Use it.
OEM vs Aftermarket: Why Factory Prints Matter
Every aftermarket manual I have ever been handed for the 800 or 841 series had at least one torque value that did not match the Ford blue-print. Valve rotator specs? Page 91. Cylinder bore limits? Page 103. The OEM print comes from the same source as the dealer service department used. No reprints. No copy of a copy. This is a scan of the official SHOP MANUAL FORD SERIES 501-600-601-700-701-800-801-900-901-1801-2000-4000 document – the same one that tells you the model number is stamped on the top of the transmission housing at the left front corner. If you work on these tractors for a living, that detail alone saves you an hour of hunting serial numbers. Automotive Industry Overview standards aside, Ford’s own documentation is the only thing I let a junior tech touch when they are pulling a differential overhaul (page 272) or adjusting the constant draft control on the hydraulic lift (page 310).
Related manuals you should stock next to this one: Ford 600, 800, NAA, 501, 700 Parts Catalog (1953-59) 310 Pages”> – that parts catalog gives you exploded views and part numbers that this service manual does not repeat. The Ford 600, 601, 800, 700, 900 1961 Workshop Manual – OEM Factory Specs”> covers a slightly later model year but shares the same engine families. For diesel-specific work, grab the Ford 601, 801, Fordson Major Diesel 1957 User Manual – OEM Factory Specs”> – it includes the injection pump calibration curves that this manual references but does not reproduce. And for a broader look at tractor safety and maintenance practices, Automotive Industry Overview gives background on the engineering that led to these machines.
- Does this manual cover the hydraulics lift system on the 841?
- Yes. The Hydraulic Lift System section starts at page 306 and runs through page 345. It includes the pump overhaul (page 327), control valve overhaul (page 316), system pressure check (page 313), and the remote control valve (page 331).
- Are torque values in foot-pounds or Newton-meters?
- Foot-pounds. Imperial units throughout – no conversion tables.
- I have a Select-O-Speed transmission that jumps out of gear. Where do I start?
- Start with the Select-O-Speed operation section on page 218, then go to trouble-shooting page 229. It walks through hydraulic pressure checks and valve linkage adjustments (page 321) before you tear into the clutch pack.
- What about the front axle and steering?
- The front axle section covers pedestal R&R (page 19), overhaul (page 20), axle main member (page 33), drag links and toe-in (page 34A), and steering gear adjustment (page 35). The factory toe-in spec is 1/8 to 3/16 inch, not the 1/4 inch some aftermarket sources claim.
You want a tractor that pulls a load without leaving oil on the driveway or dropping a valve seat at full throttle. This manual is the difference between guessing and knowing. 143 pages of the actual Ford shop procedures – no aftermarket shortcuts, no reprints of reprints. Access the Factory Manual and keep it on the bench next to your torque wrench.
