Description
Ford 501, 541, 541-4, 741 1960 User Manual
If you are wrenching on a Ford 501, 541, 541-4, 741 1960 User Manual offset tractor, you already know the main manual for the 741 doesn’t tell you where the throttle moved. That’s why this 16-page supplement exists. It’s a Ford factory document, not a third-party summary. I’ve seen too many guys guess the brake pedal lock location and waste an afternoon. This manual fixes that with OEM diagrams and control positions.

Controls Relocation – What Moved and Where
Page 4 of this supplement shows the throttle control lever now sits on the right side of the instrument panel. Push up to speed up. On diesel tractors, pull it all the way down to kill the engine. The clutch pedal, brake pedals, and their locks are shifted compared to a standard 741. If you skip this page, you’ll be hunting for the PTO lever blind. Figure 1 on that page lays it out with line drawings.
Attaching Implements – The 25-Inch Top Link
Standard top link length on these offset models is 25 inches, not the 23 inches on the Model 741. Page 5 explains the adjustable top link: release the lock, rotate the sleeve until you hit the right length. A decal on the sleeve shows the correct adjustment. Most implements hook up to the three-point linkage the same way as the 741, but that top link difference will throw your geometry off if you ignore it.
Check the Hydraulic Oil Level – Dipstick Location
Figure 2 on page 5 points out the hydraulic oil level dipstick. It’s right next to the PTO lever. Check it with the tractor level. Don’t overfill – the manual doesn’t give a capacity, but the dipstick marks are your guide. If you’re looking for the left and right brake control rods, they’re also on that same diagram.
Standard and Optional Equipment: Page 2 Breakdown
The equipment chart on page 2 lists what each model came with. The 541 and 541-4 both have the 134 cu. in. gasoline standard, with diesel or LP-gas as options. The 541-4 is the high clearance version – it gets 12×38 rear tires optionally, while the 541 uses 10×38. Stabilizer weight is 300 lbs. on the 541-4. If you’re rebuilding a tractor and missing parts, this chart tells you what was original.
What Does This Supplement Cover That the Main Manual Doesn’t?
According to the foreword on page 3, this supplement only covers the differences between the offset tractors and the base Model 741. So if you need the full operational details for the 741 – transmission shift pattern, PTO engagement procedure, hydraulic system theory – you need the regular owner’s manual. This supplement assumes you have that. But for the offset-specific controls, it’s the only source.
The 16-Page Factor – Why Size Matters
Sixteen pages may sound thin, but it’s exactly what Ford intended. No filler, no generic lubrication tables. Every page addresses a real difference. The OEM page numbers are referenced – I pointed to page 4 and page 5 above. Aftermarket reprints often crop out the original page numbers. This scan keeps them. If you see a PDF that claims to be this supplement but has 80 pages, it’s been padded with irrelevant content. Stick with the original 16 pages.

- Does this manual cover the diesel engine?
- Yes, page 2 lists diesel as optional equipment for both the 541 and 541-4.
- How many pages does it have?
- Exactly 16 pages – no more, no less.
- What is the difference between the 541 and the 541-4?
- The 541-4 is the high clearance offset. It gets different tire options like 12×38, a 300 lb. stabilizer weight, and the optional 11×28 rear tires. The 541 uses 10×38 standard. Both share the same engines and transmission.
- Is the PTO operation fully explained in this supplement?
- Not completely. The supplement shows the PTO lever location on page 5 and says the operation remains the same as the Model 741 owner’s manual. If you don’t have that main manual, you’ll only get the lever position and the mention that it’s transmission-driven. For engagement procedures, clutch timing, and PTO shaft speeds, you must refer to the 741 manual. That’s why I always recommend buying both – the 741 manual and this supplement – when you start a restoration.
If you are restoring or repairing a 1960 Ford offset tractor, you need the factory data. Don’t rely on someone else’s notes. Access the Factory Manual and get the original specs.
