If you are cracking open an old Ford tractor engine and you do not have the correct bore, stroke, or compression ratio written down, you are guessing. Guessing on a 70-year-old engine costs you time and parts. I have seen guys pull a head off an 8N, slap on a gasket from a generic kit, and wonder why it blows coolant out the overflow. Every model gets its own row. The 8N uses a 4-cylinder L-head with a 3.188-inch bore and 3.75-inch stroke – 119.7 cubic inches, compression 6.50:1. The NAA and 800 share a 134-cubic-inch engine at 6.60:1. The 600 and 900 carry the 172-cubic-inch OHV mill at 6.75:1. Firing order is 1-2-4-3 across the board, but idle speed changes: 400 RPM for the 8N, 450-475 for the hundred series. Maximum no-load RPM varies from 2000 up to 2400 depending on model. Capacities: Fuel, Cooling, and Lubrication

Page 2 lists capacities by model. Fuel tank: 10 gallons for the 9N/2N/8N, 11 for the NAA, 14 for the 600/700/800, 13 for the 900/501/601 etc., and 17 gallons for later hundred-series tractors. Cooling system holds 12 quarts on the 8N and 15 quarts on the hundred series. Crankcase capacity: 6 quarts for the 8N, 5 quarts with filter change for the newer models. Initial timing at 475 RPM: 4° BTDC for the 8N (serial 263844 and later), 8° for the 600/700, 5° for the 800/900. Advance at 2000 RPM ranges from 18° on the early 8N to 29°-31° on the 600/900. Point gap on the side-distributor 8N is 0.025 inch; other models use 0.024 to 0.026. Spark plug gap is 0.025 to 0.028 inch with a 14mm thread. Do not assume one size fits all – the 8N side distributor changed after serial 263843. Page 2 carries that footnote.

The clearances table continues on page 2 and beyond. You get valve clearances, piston-to-wall, ring end gaps, and bearing clearances for each model. Without these numbers, you are fitting parts blind. A 0.001-inch error in rod bearing clearance can kill an engine in 50 hours.
