Description
FIAT Kobelco SL35B, SL40B 2002 Workshop Manual – OEM Factory Specs

I’ve been turning wrenches since before some of you were born, and I’ve seen enough aftermarket manuals that should have been used as firestarter. The FIAT Kobelco SL35B, SL40B 2002 Workshop Manual is the real deal. 680 pages, printed by FIAT KOBELCO themselves in July 2002. If you’re working on a compact loader, you need the factory torque data, not a copy that guessed the values. This manual covers both the SL35B and SL40B models, and it doesn’t skip anything.
Page 1 of this manual hits you with the “AVOID ACCIDENTS” section. That’s not a suggestion. When you’re under a boom with hydraulics charged, you want the factory procedure for locking the boom and tilting the cab. Section 00 covers proper support of a raised machine and boom lock pins. Ignore that at your own risk. Page 2 tells you this manual is written for a skilled technician. That means if you’re a DIY guy, you better read each step twice. But the procedures are laid out clearly enough that anyone with basic mechanical sense can follow them—provided they respect the torque specs and safety steps.
Engine Overhaul Coverage: Section 10
The engine section alone is worth the price of admission. Chapter 1 covers the SL35B-N843 and SL40B-N843H engines. You get the full disassembly sequence: valve seat rework, cylinder block inspection, piston and ring specs, connecting rod bearing holders, crankshaft and bearing holder assembly. The torque specifications are listed in a dedicated table—do not guess on head bolts. If you’ve ever had a head gasket fail because you went 5 lb-ft over, you know what I’m talking about. The manual also includes engine electrical diagrams and the governor operation section. For a shop that rebuilds these engines, having the OEM clearances and wear limits is the difference between a 1000-hour rebuild and a 100-hour failure.
What Torque Data Is Included?
Section 00 gives you the minimum hardware tightening torques, the standard torque data for hydraulic tubes and fittings, and pipe thread fitting torque. That covers your basic fasteners. But the real value is in the engine and transmission sections, where every critical bolt gets a spec. I’ve seen a rookie snap a piston cooling nozzle bolt because he used a generic chart. Don’t be that guy. The manual also addresses installation of adjustable fittings in straight thread O-ring bosses—a detail that many aftermarket guides omit. If you’re doing any hydraulic line work, you need that O-ring boss torque.
Safety Procedures: Boom Lock Pins and Cab Tilt
Before you ever pull a cylinder or tilt the cab, read the safety section. The manual includes procedures for properly supporting a raised machine, raising the boom without hydraulic oil flow, and raising the boom without battery voltage (12 volts). That last one is critical if you’re working with a dead electrical system. It also covers reattaching cylinders after repair with the boom resting on boom lock pins. If you skip the lock pin step, you could lose fingers—or worse. The cab and boom tilt procedure is spelled out step by step. Use the boom lock pins. Every time.
Hydrostatic Drive System Testing
Section 29 dives into the hydrostatic transmission. The manual gives you test procedures for charge system pressure, pump case drain, pump high-pressure, pump efficiency, motor case drain, and motor efficiency. I’ve used these tests to diagnose a failing pump in 20 minutes rather than swapping parts. The troubleshooting section is not generic—it’s based on the actual hydrostatic system in the SL35B and SL40B. If you’re dealing with weak drive or sluggish response, this section saves hours. The manual also includes an air ingress test for the hydraulic and hydrostatic system. Air in the oil kills pumps fast.
Is the 680-Page Manual Complete?
Yes. 680 pages covers everything from general information to specifications to major unit overhaul. You get the engine, hydrostatic transmission, cooling system, fuel system, electrical details, and special tool lists. The manual also tells you how to reinstall the engine into the skid steer frame and how to operate the engine after overhaul. There’s no missing sections. This is the same manual that FIAT KOBELCO dealers used when these machines were new. It’s not condensed or cut down.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Does the manual include electrical diagrams?
- Yes, Section 10 includes an engine components electrical diagram.
- What is the difference between the SL35B and SL40B coverage?
- The manual covers both models, with specific differences noted in engine chapters and specifications. It’s critical to verify your machine model code in Section 00 before ordering parts or applying torque values. The manual includes separate data for each where they differ, like engine model and serial number locations, but many procedures like hydrostatic testing apply to both. Don’t assume interchangeability without checking the model codes printed in the manual.
This is the factory document you need when you’re elbows-deep in a loader. Get it on your bench or tablet. Access the Factory Manual and keep it in your shop.
