Page count alone does not tell you much, but 652 pages means this manual covers every system in the machine. Section 1 alone has two groups: Precautions for Disassembly and Assembly and Tightening Torque. Group 2 on torque gives you the fastening values for the entire upperstructure and undercarriage. If you are swapping a control valve or rebuilding the swing device, those numbers are not optional – they are the difference between a seal that holds and a call from the customer at 6 AM. I keep a printed copy on the bench next to my torque wrench because I have caught too many aftermarket specs being off by 10 ft-lbs.
Group 2 Tightening Torque – Why It Matters
Torque values are scattered through the manual, but Group 2 in Section 1 is where you start. The manual lists tightening torque for bolts, nuts, and flared fittings. If you are working on the pilot valve or the shockless valve, you need those numbers. I do not care if you have been turning wrenches for 30 years – the bolt stretch on a pump mounting flange is different from a cab mount. This manual tells you which ones get thread-locker and which get oiled threads. One missed spec and you are chasing a hydraulic leak or a broken ear.
Does This Manual Cover the Control Valve and Pump?
Section 2 – Upperstructure – has eleven groups. Group 4 is Pump Device, Group 5 is Control Valve. If you need to disassemble the main hydraulic pump or the control valve spools, the manual gives step-by-step removal, inspection, and assembly procedures. It also includes special tool requirements. For example, the swing device (Group 6) has a pinion bearing preload procedure that requires a specific puller. I have seen techs try to beat the bearing off with a hammer – that ruins the race. The manual tells you what tool to use and what the preload torque should be. Follow it.
Engine Overhaul: 13 Sub-Sections
Section 5 – Engine – is the thickest part of the manual. It starts with General Information and Maintenance, then goes through Disassembly, Inspection and Repair, Assembly, Lubrication System, Cooling System, Fuel System, Turbocharger, Engine Electrical, Troubleshooting, Special Tools, and Repair Standards. If you are pulling the head on an EX330LC-5, the valve clearance specs are in the Inspection and Repair section. The fuel injection timing procedure is in the Fuel System group. Do not guess – the manual includes the timing marks and the injection pump installation sequence. One tooth off on the gear train and the engine runs rough or bends a valve.
Undercarriage: Track Adjuster and Travel Device Specs
Section 3 – Undercarriage – covers Swing Bearing, Travel Device, Center Joint, Track Adjuster, Front Idler, Upper and Lower Roller, and Track. The track adjuster procedure includes the grease pressure limits and the proper way to release tension. I have watched guys crack a track adjuster cylinder because they did not follow the depressurization steps. This manual walks you through it. The travel device (final drive) disassembly includes shim selection for the planetary gear end play. If you skip that measurement, the gearbox whines and eats itself. The spec is in the manual – use it.
Safety Warnings and Proper Disassembly Sequence
Every section starts with safety precautions. The manual uses the standard signal words – CAUTION for hazardous situations. For instance, when removing the counterweight (Group 2 in Section 2), the manual specifies the lifting point and the required capacity of the hoist. I have seen shops drop a counterweight because they hooked it at the wrong angle. The manual also lists the sequence for disassembling the control valve to avoid damaging the spool bores. If you follow the sequence, you keep the valve body straight. If not, you buy a new valve stack.
