Dynapac C 220 User Manual – Factory-Approved Operations

Dynapac C 220 vibratory roller user manual front cover, 24 pages

You’re running a Dynapac C 220 roller on a highway job or a parking lot. The water spray clogs, the hydraulic motor starts whining, and the parking brake feels soft. You pull out a generic manual and get vague diagrams with no real numbers. That’s how you burn a weekend and a paycheck. I’m Mike Callahan, 28-year ASE Master. I’ve seen rollers sidelined because someone guessed at the charge pressure or skipped the lift procedure. This is the Dynapac C 220 User Manual – the factory document, not a reprint, not a photocopy. 24 pages of what Dynapac actually put in the crate. You need this on the workbench, not a PDF on your phone.

Technical Data on Page 3 – What You Need

Page 3 of this user manual holds the machine’s vital stats – weight, water tank capacity (the one marked in Fig 1), drum dimensions, and vibration specs. You’ll find the operating speed range (5–7 km/h for asphalt) and the amplitude/frequency adjustment table. If you’re setting up for a base course or an overlay, that table tells you which pass count and vibration mode to use. No guessing. The manual also includes a serial number reference – valid from serial No. 489513 – so you know if your roller matches the edition.

Deutz Diesel Engine – Page 6 Coverage

The engine section on page 6 isn’t a full rebuild guide, but it gives you the lubrication and cooling data you need for daily operation. Oil grade, filter change intervals, air cleaner maintenance – the C 220 uses a Deutz diesel, and this manual spells out the checks. If you’re doing a major overhaul, you’ll need the engine’s separate service manual, but for routine upkeep and troubleshooting, this is the reference. I’ve seen guys pour 15W-40 into a Deutz that specs 10W-30 because they trusted a parts-store chart. Don’t be that guy.

Parking Brake and Electrical System – Pages 16-17

Parking brake adjustment is on page 16, right after the scraper and sprinkler section. The brake is a mechanical drum type, and the manual shows the linkage clearance and cable tension. Skip this, and the roller can creep on a slope. The electrical system on page 16 covers the tachometer, headlamp circuit, and the starter relay. No wiring diagrams in this user manual – that’s in the service manual – but you get the fuse locations and switch functions. Enough to diagnose a no-crank or a dead light.

Hydraulic System – Understanding the Triplex Pump

On page 10, the hydraulic system gets its own chapter. The CC 20 uses a triplex pump (items 20 in Fig 1) that drives vibration, steering, and the hydrostatic drive. The manual lays out the hydraulic oil tank capacity, filter specs, and the pump flow direction. If your drum vibrations cut out, check the pump coupling and the oil level first. Page 10 also covers the hydraulic motors (vibration and drive) and the steering cylinder. Don’t mix hydraulic oils – the manual calls for a specific viscosity. I’ve repaired one too many contaminated systems from that mistake.

Maintenance Schedule – Page 19

Page 19 lists daily, weekly, and monthly checks. Grease points, sprinkler nozzle cleaning, scraper blade wear, and bolt torque on the drum mounting. The lifting instructions on page 18 are critical – you lift the roller using the two front and two rear lifting points, and the manual shows the sling angles. Skip that and you can bend the frame. I’ve seen it happen. The maintenance section also covers the parking brake adjustment recheck after 50 hours. Write it down.

3 Reasons to Use the Factory User Manual Over Aftermarket PDFs

First, aftermarket manuals often skip the safety warnings for lifting and brake lockout. This one has them bolded. Second, the OEM part numbers for filters and belts are listed in the technical data – aftermarket replacements may cross-reference wrong. Third, the serial number plate location and decoding are shown. Aftermarket reprints leave that out. You’re paying for precision, not fluff.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this manual cover the entire Dynapac C 220 roller?
Yes. It covers operation, technical data, all major systems (engine, hydraulics, brakes, electrical), maintenance, and lifting. It does not include engine rebuild procedures or full wiring diagrams – those are in the service manual.
Can I use this manual for a C 220 with a different serial number?
This edition is valid from serial No. 489513. Earlier machines may have different brake or hydraulic setups. Check your serial plate before ordering.
What torque values are listed?
None are printed in this user manual. For wheel lug torque, drum bolt torque, and engine mount specs, you need the Dynapac service or repair manual. This manual covers only operational adjustments.
Is the parking brake adjustment procedure included?
It is on page 16. It details the linkage stroke and a check for drum clearance. Follow it exactly – the brake is your safety on a slope.
