Section 3 lists what needs to happen every day. Check coolant level – yes, but also air cleaner indicator, fuel filter water drain, and belt tension. The manual gives specific belt deflection specs in inches. I’ve had apprentices try to go by feel. One over-tensioned a serpentine and ate the alternator bearing in 200 hours. The daily section also covers the automatic water-in-fuel sensor test. If you’re running a QSK23 in a generator set, skip this step and you’ll be pulling the fuel system later. Troubleshooting Symptoms: What the Factory Lists

Section TS (Troubleshooting Symptoms) is the part I use most. The manual lists symptoms like “Engine cranks but will not start,” “low power,” “excessive fuel consumption,” and “high coolant temperature.” For each symptom, it gives a numbered list of possible causes and the corrective action. It doesn’t say “check the fuel filter first” – it tells you which test to run in what order. That’s the difference between a factory manual and a generic one. I’ve seen a tech replace an entire injection pump when the real issue was a plugged fuel return line. The troubleshooting section would have pointed him to check the return line restriction first. Time saved. Money saved.

Specifications: Torque, Fluids, and Clearances

Section V (Specifications) is where you’ll find the actual numbers. Torque values for main bearing caps, connecting rods, cylinder head bolts. The manual uses both N-m and lb-ft – I stick with pound-feet because that’s my torque wrench scale. Fluids: oil capacity in quarts, coolant capacity in gallons. The lube oil specs require API CI-4 or better. Don’t use car oil. The manual also lists valve lash adjustment (intake and exhaust) in thousandths of an inch. And injector timing – you need that if you’re doing a top-end overhaul. Every spec is from the 2003 publication, but Cummins updates rarely change these base values. The system diagrams (Section D) show the cooling and lubrication circuits. And Section M lists component manufacturers – handy when you need a part number for a thermostat or a starter motor.

Unlike a Manual Transmission, a diesel engine like the QSK23 has its own service intervals that don’t depend on transmission type. But if you’re swapping the engine into a truck, the Manual Transmission may need its own specifications from a separate manual. This manual covers only the engine.
