Description
Chrysler Stealth 1991 Technical Manual
I’ve torqued more head bolts than most people have had hot meals. When a Chrysler Stealth 1991 Technical Manual hits my bench, I know I’m dealing with factory engineering – not a rehashed aftermarket booklet full of guesses. This is 284 pages of what Chrysler’s own techs used. It covers the Stealth from the front bumper to the rear differential, including the ABS, the Electronic Control Suspension, and the twin-turbo fuel system.
Skip the aftermarket junk.

What’s Inside the Chrysler Stealth 1991 Technical Manual
You get the full Group Index – General Data, Vehicle Identification, then straight into Front Suspension with the separate Electronic Control Suspension (ECS) section. Rear Axle covers the viscous coupling limited slip differential. Brakes are divided into Service Brakes and Anti-Lock Braking System for both FWD and AWD – they are not the same, and the manual gives you the specific bleeding sequence for each. The Electrical chapter runs through the wiring harness, ETACS, theft-alarm, and audio. Engine section covers the DOHC base engine with mounting details. Intake and Exhaust includes the variable induction control, twin turbo and twin intercooler, and the active exhaust (main muffler control). Fuel System is the thickest chapter – control unit, sensors, actuators, injection control, idle speed control, ignition timing, turbo pressure control, self-diagnosis, cruise control – everything you need. Propeller shaft, rear suspension (both FWD and AWD), power steering, 4-wheel steering system, manual and automatic transaxles, wheels, body, SRS, heater and A/C, emission controls. 284 pages of factory information.
3 Systems That Demand Factory Documentation
First: the Electronic Control Suspension (ECS). Aftermarket wiring diagrams are garbage. This manual shows the exact pinouts for the height sensors and stepper motors. Second: the 4-Wheel Steering (4WS) system. Hydraulic rear steering with its own control unit – you need the factory hydraulic circuit to bleed it right. Third: the Viscous Coupling Limited Slip Differential. The manual explains how to test the coupling torque without pulling the whole axle. Manual Transmission work? The transaxle section has disassembly and assembly procedures for both the FWD and AWD manual boxes.
Brake System: Factory Bleeding Procedure
Dealing with ABS on a Stealth is not the same as a domestic car. The manual lists the specific sequence for the FWD and AWD modulators. Bleed order matters. If you throw in generic DOT3 and assume the pedal will firm up, you’ll be back in the bay tomorrow. The parking brake section shows cable adjustment and shoe replacement. Don’t skip the front axle cotter pin torque – it’s in the Brakes chapter under Service Brakes.
Does This Manual Cover the Electronic Control Suspension?
Yes – the Front Suspension chapter has a dedicated Electronic Control Suspension (ECS) subsection. It covers system operation, component location, and diagnostic trouble codes. The height sensors are prone to failure, and the manual gives you the voltage checks at the ECU. Without this, you’re guessing at a $600 strut assembly.
Get the Right Information Before You Start
I keep a digital copy on my shop tablet. The 1991 Stealth has unique one-year parts, and the wiring differences between FWD and AWD are significant. Pair this manual with Mitsubishi Stealth 1994 Volume 2 Electrical Service Manual – Section: Engine, Ch if you need deeper electrical diagnosis. 1994 Stealth Import Service Manual Volume 1 – Section: Electrical covers the later model electrical systems. And if you only have budget for one manual, buy Chrysler Stealth Technical Information Manual – this is the one that matters.
Manual Transmission rebuilds? The manual covers both W5M31 (FWD) and W5MG1 (AWD) transaxles with gear ratios, bearing preloads, and shift fork adjustments.
- Is this the same manual a Chrysler dealer would have used?
- Yes. This is the original 1991 Technical Information Manual published by Chrysler Corporation for dealer service departments.
- Does it cover the twin-turbo model?
- Absolutely. The manual includes a dedicated section “Twin Turbo and Twin Intercooler” with turbo pressure control, wastegate adjustment, and intercooler piping. There’s also active exhaust control (Main Muffler Control) that changes exhaust tone under load. The fuel system chapter covers turbo-specific controls like fuel pressure control
and air flow sensor filter reset. Self-diagnosis procedures for the turbo system are included. If you’re working on a VR-4, this manual is mandatory.
Respect the safety notice on page 2 – spring tension fasteners can cause injury. This factory manual is the real deal, printed from the original Chrysler flat file. Access the Factory Manual from AutoRepairManuals and put it on your bench before you pull a single bolt.
