Description

Chrysler NS, GS Service Manual

I’ve been turning wrenches for 28 years, and I’ve seen more cooling system failures from bad torque specs than from bad parts. If you’re working on a Chrysler NS or GS – that ’96–’07 minivan platform – this Chrysler NS, GS Service Manual is the cooling system section pulled straight from the factory binder. Not a reprint. Not a third-party hack. Thirty-eight pages of the same procedures Chrysler dealership techs used. You want to water-pump swap a 3.3L without pulling the timing cover twice? This is how.

Accessory Drive Belts – Factory Removal and Adjustment

Belt tension specs are where aftermarket manuals lie to you. This manual gives you the OEM belt tension chart and the gauge method – no guesswork. For the 2.4L, 3.0L, and 3.3/3.8L engines, the removal and installation procedures are broken down by engine. The 3.3/3.8L section even covers the air conditioning belt separately. Page 23 has the 2.4L belt route. You’ll also find the generator/power steering pump belt procedure for the 3.0L. Skip the universal diagram – use the factory routing.

Water Pump Coverage for 2.4L, 3.0L, and 3.3/3.8L Engines

Three different water pump designs on this platform. The 2.4L uses a separate inlet tube – the removal and installation steps on page 17 show you exactly how to break the seal without warping the housing. The 3.0L pump inspection includes checking the weep hole (something Chilton’s always forgets). For the 3.3/3.8L, the manual lists the bolt tightening sequence – you need that to avoid a leak on Monday morning. Each water pump section has a tool list. I’ve seen guys snap bolts because they skipped the thread compound note. It’s in here.

Cooling System Diagnosis – Don’t Skip the Leak Test

The diagnosis section is not a flow chart for dummies. It covers radiator coolant flow test, electric fan motor test, radiator cap pressure relief check, and low coolant level aeration – that last one is the real reason your NS overheats after a coolant change. The deaeration procedure (page 15) tells you how to burp the system on these models. If you don’t follow it, you’ll get air pockets and a blown head gasket. The temperature gauge indication section explains what each gauge reading actually means electrically – not the usual “if it’s hot, it’s hot” nonsense.

Torque Specifications and Cooling System Capacities

Towards the back you get the torque chart. No “tighten securely” factory BS – foot-pounds for every fastener. The cooling system capacity table gives you the exact mix ratio for each engine variant, including the 2.4L, 3.0L, 3.3/3.8L, and the 2.0L gasoline and 2.5L VM diesel from the addendum. Need the fan module torque? It’s in the chart. Radiator drain cock? Yes, that’s also torqued – and the spec matters because overtightening cracks the plastic tank. The manual also covers the automatic transmission oil cooler for the 2.4L – the hose routing is critical to avoid kinks that starve the trans.

Addendum: 2.0L Gasoline and 2.5L VM Diesel Engines

This manual includes an addendum for the 2.0L gasoline and 2.5L VM diesel engines found in later NS/GS models. That makes it useful beyond the standard 2.4L/3.0L/3.3/3.8L coverage. The water pump belt removal for the VM diesel is a separate procedure – the belt tension chart in the addendum matches the metric spec. If you have a 2.5L diesel and you’re chasing an overheating problem, the coolant pressure bottle description and thermostat operation are written for that engine. Most online PDFs stop at the gas engines. This one doesn’t.

Does this manual cover the entire vehicle?
No. This document covers only the cooling system for Chrysler NS/GS models.
What engines are included?
2.4L, 3.0L, 3.3/3.8L gasoline, plus the addendum for 2.0L gasoline and 2.5L VM diesel. The torque and capacity charts list all of them.
Can I use this for a manual transmission oil cooler?
The automatic transmission oil cooler is covered (page 2 for the 2.4L). For manual transmission cooling, you need the Chrysler NS/GS Transaxle and Power Transfer Unit Service Manual – Section: Power Chrysler NS/GS Transaxle and Power Transfer Unit Service Manual – Section: Power – and a factory manual for the Manual Transmission side. This manual does not include transmission overhaul.
Is this the same as a generic repair manual?
Generic manuals reuse the same diagrams for multiple models and skip torque values. This is a factory Chrysler document – the same one dealership techs used. No shortcuts, no generic hose routings. Every bolt, every test point comes from the OEM.

You can waste a Saturday chasing a coolant leak with aftermarket instructions, or you can get the factory spec. The wiring diagrams and connector locations for the fan module are in the matching electrical manual – Chrysler NS GS Wiring Diagram. Tire and wheel specs? Chrysler NS GS Tires & Wheels Service Manual covers that separately. For the cooling system, this 38-page section is all you need. For the manual transmission fluid recommendations and fill procedures, refer to the Manual Transmission chapter in the full service set. Access the Factory Manual and keep it on your bench – the torque chart alone is worth the price.
