Description

Chrysler A-727, A-904 Service Manual

Been at this 28 years. Seen too many guys burn up a Torqueflite because they guessed on a band adjustment or used a third-party spec for a pump bolt. The Chrysler A-727, A-904 Service Manual you’re looking at is the only document I’d trust on the bench. It’s 78 pages of factory procedures, not some reprinted pamphlet with blurry diagrams. This is the ATSG version – the same guys Chrysler authorized to write the shop manual. If you’re rebuilding one of these transmissions, you need this open, not a YouTube video.

Diagnosis and Tests: Start Here Before Turning a Bolt

The manual kicks off with a full diagnostic section covering pressure tests, stall tests, and road test analysis. It walks you through identifying whether the problem is in the converter, valve body, or clutches – before you drop the pan. Page 9 starts the tests, and it includes a chart for Load-Flite identification markings so you know exactly which version you’re dealing with. Unlike a Manual Transmission, this thing has hydraulic circuits that need methodical checking. Skip this step and you’ll be chasing your tail after reassembly.

Adjustments – Don’t Skip the Bands

The low-reverse and kickdown bands are the most common cause of a sloppy shift, and they’re adjustable externally. This manual shows you exactly how to set them – torque the adjuster to 72 in-lbs, then back off a specific number of turns depending on the band. No guesswork. Page 20 covers adjustments, and if you don’t follow the sequence, you’ll burn up the band within 500 miles. I’ve seen it.

Page 58 is where you live. That’s the Specifications section – all torque values in ft-lbs, clutch clearance, and spring pressures. No aftermarket numbers that may or may not be right. This is factory-originated data from Chrysler’s own illustrations.

Service Out of the Vehicle – Teardown and Assembly

This section (starting page 33) is the heart of the manual. It covers disassembly of the pump, front and rear clutches, planetary gear sets, and the overrunning clutch. Each step has a reference to the correct tool – like the A-727 front pump removal tool (special socket number). The manual provides oil pump bushing clearance specs and the correct way to measure end play. You get the exact order for installing the snap rings and thrust washers. One mistake there and you lose reverse or third gear.

Torque Converter Information – Page 67

Converters get abused. This section explains lock-up converter operation, the clutch piston check, and cleaning procedures. It also tells you what to look for when inspecting the stator splines and thrust surfaces. If you don’t measure the converter end clearance, you can destroy the pump. The OEM illustrations show the exact flow path. Don’t rely on a generic converter guide.

Why This Manual Beats Aftermarket Copies

I’ve flipped through those cheap reprints that claim to cover the A-727. They leave out the valve body bolt torque sequence and the governor valve adjustments. This ATSG manual includes the full valve body rebuild (page 28) with separator plate identification and check ball locations. The Technical Service Information section (page 60) covers update bulletins and common failure points. That’s information you won’t find in a 50-page generic. The manual is an original OEM-licensed production, not a photocopy. If you’re tempted by a budget option, compare the page count and the detail level – there’s no shortcut for factory data.

For other Chrysler vehicles in your shop, check the Chrysler Stealth 1993 Service Manual – 1286 Pages Factory OEM for that platform, or the Chrysler Stealth 1993 Service Manual – 434-Page OEM Factory Specs for a focused engine/transmission guide. And if you’re dealing with a late-model SUV, the Chrysler Nitro R/T 2007 Service Manual – 1799 Pages Factory OEM has the full vehicle coverage. Each of those is the same caliber of documentation – factory specs you can trust.

What Does This 78-Page Service Manual Cover?

Page count: 78 pages of actual content – no ads, no fluff. Chapters: Introduction (page 3), Diagnosis and Tests (page 9), Adjustments (page 20), Service in Vehicle (page 23), Valve Body (page 28), Service Out of Vehicle (page 33), Specifications (page 58), Technical Service Information (page 60), Torque Converter Information (page 67). Everything you need to rebuild or repair the A-727 and A-904 to factory standards. The wiring diagrams and hydraulic schematics are from the original Chrysler prints – not redrawn by someone who never held a torque wrench.

Unlike a Manual Transmission, the Torqueflite demands precise hydraulic clearances. This manual gives you the specs for clutch pack return springs, oil pump clearances, and the exact number of clutch plates for each application. If you’re a home garage guy afraid of tearing into an automatic, this is your safety net. Every step is laid out in the same sequence a pro would follow.

Does this manual include torque specs for the front pump bolts?
Yes, page 58 has all fastener torque values for the pump, valve body, and converter.
Is the A-999 transmission covered in this manual?
The manual explicitly covers A-727 and A-904 models, but it references the A-999 wide-ratio gear set and includes the unique sun gear and front planetary details. The A-999 shares most internal components and procedures; however, if you need dedicated A-999 data, look for a separate supplement. The Specifications section notes the 2.74:1 low gear ratio and identifies which parts are unique. For a full rebuild, this manual will get you through the majority of A-999 work, but verify the seven-digit part number on the pan rail to confirm exact parts.

That’s what a real service manual looks like. No shortcuts, no generic aftermarket guesses. If you want to rebuild your Torqueflite right the first time, you need the factory data. Access the Factory Manual – it’s the same one I used for every A-727 that left my bay with a guarantee.
