Description
Caterpillar D4D Service Manual
You have been there. Tearing down the power train on a D4D and finding no factory specs, just a third-party book with generic numbers. That gets expensive. The Caterpillar D4D Service Manual is 196 pages of OEM procedures, written for the technician who needs exact data—nothing less.

Power Train Disassembly: What This 196-Page Manual Covers
On page 2 the Introduction tells you the Alphabetical Index lists every component in the Power Train section. You get operation numbers for each job—like Brake Bands and Linings (operation 26), Steering Clutches (operation 27), and Bevel Gear and Pinion Shaft Settings (operation 30). The Service Index organizes jobs by location on the machine. Every step includes required tool lists and safety warnings. Ignore these pages and you will be ordering parts.
Brake Bands and Linings: Page 69 Torque Specs
On page 69 the manual gives the exact procedure for brake band adjustment and lining replacement. Not a generic ‘tighten until snug’—you get the specific torque value for the anchor pin nut and the adjusting screw locknut. The running clearance between band and drum is measured with a feeler gauge at the center of the band. The manual specifies to apply thread locker after final adjustment. Skip the spec and the band seizes. I have seen it.
Does the Manual Cover Bevel Gear and Pinion Shaft Settings?
Yes. The Alphabetical Index lists ‘Bevel Gear and Pinion Shaft Settings’ pages 85-86, operation 30. This covers Direct Drive, Special Application and Power Shift. If you are pulling the differential, you need the preload and backlash specs from those pages. Aftermarket manuals leave this out. The direct drive transmission section covers mechanical shift linkage—like a standard Manual Transmission layout.
3 Sections You Cannot Skip on a Power Shift Transmission
The Power Shift transmission sections in this manual are Torque Converter (Disassemble & Assemble), Transmission Hydraulic Controls, and Transmission Oil Filter. Each has its own operation number. The hydraulic control section includes valve body clearances. If you skip the filter disassembly procedure (operations 33-34), you risk debris contamination. The manual tells you the exact seal orientation. For understanding torque converter transmissions versus conventional Manual Transmission, this manual covers both.
Caterpillar D4D Service Manual: Factory Data vs Aftermarket
This is OEM documentation from Caterpillar. The Introduction states procedures are based on current information at time of writing. The diagrams are factory line drawings, not redrawn by a third party. You get the same specs a dealer shop uses. No guesswork on track roller frame alignment (page 39, operation 16), or steering clutch controls (page 24). Every torque value—front idler rod assembly, final drive pinions, sprocket shaft—comes straight from Caterpillar engineering. I trust it because I have used it.
Get the Right Track Roller Frame Alignment Data
Alignment of Track Roller Frames is operation 16. The manual gives the procedure for checking and adjusting frame parallelism. It requires a straightedge and measuring tape. Do it wrong and the tracks run off the rollers. I torque every bolt to spec, and this manual gives those numbers. The brake band section alone saves you a come-back job.

- Is this manual suitable for a complete engine overhaul?
- No. This is the Power Train section only. Engine data is in a separate manual.
- Does the manual include torque specifications for the brake bands?
- Yes. On page 69 the brake band and lining procedure lists the torque for the anchor pin nut and the adjusting screw locknut. It also gives the running clearance between the band and drum—you measure with a feeler gauge at the center of the band. The manual specifies to apply a thread locker to the adjusting screw after final adjustment. If you don’t have the exact torque, the band can overheat or drag. I keep a copy at the workbench for every D4D I touch.
Access the Factory Manual from AutoRepairManuals and put the correct data on your bench. It is the difference between a rebuild that lasts and a parts cannon that empties your wallet.
