This Caterpillar 966G Technical Manual is the real deal – 26 pages of OEM specs, not some aftermarket summary. If you’re working on a 966G Series II wheel loader, you need this on your bench, not a third-party PDF that might have the wrong bolt grade. The manual covers the 3176C ATAAC engine, transmission, axles, and more – all with the numbers that Cat engineers intended.

Engine Specs: 3176C ATAAC – Page 1 Data
Page 1 gives you the engine model: Caterpillar 3176C with ATAAC (air-to-air aftercooler). Flywheel power is 194 kW (260 hp) or 246 hp depending on the rating. You’ll also find operating weight and bucket capacities. Don’t assume your machine matches – check the serial number prefix. The manual lists the exact specs for the Series II. If you’re swapping an engine, you need the flywheel housing alignment specs – they’re in this manual.
Transmission Details: Electronic Clutch Pressure Control
The 966G Series II uses a planetary power shift transmission with automatic shift capability. The Electronic Clutch Pressure Control (ECPC) is the key to smooth shifts. I’ve had techs come to me with complaint of harsh shifts – nine times out of ten, they didn’t check the ECPC solenoid resistance. The manual gives you the procedure: disconnect the harness, measure resistance between pins A and B, should be 4.5-5.5 ohms at 20°C. If you’re also working on a Manual Transmission on a different machine, make sure you have the correct OEM manual for that as well. The ECPC system also requires a specific transmission fluid – Cat TO-4, not generic. The manual lists the capacity: 37 liters (9.8 gallons) for the transmission and torque converter combined. Page 26 has the torque specs for the transmission housing bolts – 95 N·m (70 lb-ft) for the M12 bolts, 130 N·m (96 lb-ft) for the M14. Use a torque wrench, not a “feel” – I’ve seen stripped threads from over-torqueing. Also, disconnect the battery before probing the ECPC solenoid – the controller can be damaged by a short.

Page 26 is where you’ll find the final torque values for critical fasteners: axle flange bolts, wheel lug nuts, and transmission housing bolts. I recommend photocopying that page and laminating it – keep it in the cab. Don’t trust generic torque charts; they don’t account for Cat’s thread engagement or bolt grade. The manual also specifies the tightening sequence for the axle flange – a star pattern in three steps. Skip that and you’ll warp the flange. Axle Service: 4-Planetary Design
The front and rear axles are Caterpillar designed and built with four-planetary gear sets. That’s heavy-duty, but it means the oil level and type matter. The manual specifies Cat SAE 30 oil for the axles, and the fill plug locations are shown on a diagram. Common mistake: overfilling. The sight gauge is your friend – check it on level ground. The manual also lists the axle bearing preload adjustment procedure. You’ll need a dial indicator and a torque wrench. Don’t skip the preload step – loose bearings will destroy the carrier. Operator Station Options: Conventional vs Command Control
This manual covers both operator station options: conventional steering wheel with pilot hydraulic controls, and command control steering with electro-hydraulic controls. The command control system uses a semicircular steering wheel with integrated transmission controls. If you’re troubleshooting a steering issue, the manual gives the hydraulic pressure test points and expected pressures. Page 1 lists the operating weight, which affects the hydraulic system pressure. The manual lists the locations: engine oil dipstick and fill, hydraulic oil sight gauge, transmission dipstick, coolant sight gauge, and fuel filter. All accessible without climbing. The manual also includes the ecology drains – use them to collect waste oil. Service intervals: engine oil change every 250 hours, hydraulic oil every 1,000 hours. Don’t skip the oil sample – Cat recommends S·O·S analysis. The manual tells you which ports to sample from.
