BMW F 650 CS Factory Repair Manual – 352-page OEM service manual cover

BMW F 650 CS Repair Manual – Factory Specs, Not Guesswork

I’ve been twisting wrenches since before some of you were born, and I can tell you right now: the difference between a bike that runs another 50,000 miles and one that leaves you stranded on I-10 is having the right torque value for a single fastener. This BMW F 650 CS Repair Manual is the real deal – 352 pages of OEM-published data straight from BMW Motorrad After Sales. No aftermarket interpretation, no “close enough” specs. If you’re working on an F 650 CS, this is the document you need on the bench.

Tightening Torques and Operating Fluids

Every repair manual should start with torque specs, and this one does it right. The “00 Tightening torques, Operating fluids” chapter gives you the exact ft-lb values for every engine, chassis, and brake fastener. You’ll also find a table of operating fluids – engine oil grade, coolant type, brake fluid DOT rating. I’ve seen too many guys grab whatever oil is on sale and wonder why the clutch slips. BMW specifies exactly what goes in, and it’s in this manual. Page numbers? The fluid chart is in the first section – you can find it without flipping through the whole book.

What Does the Pre-Delivery Check Cover?

That section isn’t just for dealerships. If you bought a crate bike or a basket case, the pre-delivery check tells you how to unpack, inspect for shipping damage, install remaining items, fill and charge the battery, check engine oil level, and set tyre pressures. There’s even a procedure for checking the shipping crate for damage – including separate steps for damage in Germany versus importer markets. That level of detail tells you these people have thought about every scenario. Use it as a checklist when you’re assembling a project bike.

352 Pages of Factory Service Data

This isn’t a 50-page owner’s manual. It’s a complete service manual with 352 pages covering everything from the maintenance schedule to valve clearance adjustments to toothed belt replacement. The table of contents is broken into logical construction groups. You want the brake fluid bleed procedure? Go to the “00 Maintenance” chapter – Inspection IV covers changing brake fluid and bleeding the front and rear brakes. The manual even tells you which inspections require what work. Inspections I, II, III, and IV are all laid out with specific tasks at each interval. I’ve used these on multiple F 650 CS bikes, and I’ve never had a procedure miss a step.

Know Your Valve Clearance Procedure

Valve adjustments are where most home mechanics screw up. The manual walks you through checking valve clearances on the Rotax engine step by step: preparatory work, remove intake air silencer, expose radiator, expose cylinder head, turn crankshaft to TDC, check clearance, then adjust if needed. The clearance specs are given in both inches and millimeters. Use a feeler gauge, not a guess. I’ve seen guys skip the “exposing the radiator” step and then complain they can’t get to the valve cover. Follow the order they give – it’s written by engineers who designed the bike.

Maintenance Schedule: Inspections I Through IV

This section alone is worth the price of the manual. It breaks down exactly what needs to be done at each inspection interval: oil and filter change (engine-only for Inspection I, engine and oil tank for II–IV), cleaning the oil strainer in the frame (Inspection II, once only), greasing rubber grommets, checking coolant, changing coolant every two years (Inspection IV), replacing spark plug (Inspection III), replacing fuel filter every 40,000 km/24,000 miles (Inspection III), checking clutch play, brake pads and discs, toothed belt replacement (Inspection III), and belt tension adjustment (Inspections I–III). There’s even a procedure for reading the fault code memory using the MoDiTeC diagnostic tool – covered under Inspections I through IV. If you’re doing a full service, you can tick every box from this chapter.

MoDiTeC Fault Code Reading

When the EFI light comes on and you don’t know why, this manual shows you how to connect the MoDiTeC and pull fault codes. It’s a specific tool, but the procedure is clear: read the memory, interpret the codes, and clear them after repair. If you don’t have a MoDiTeC, at least you know what the factory expects. The diagnostic steps are in the Maintenance section under “Reading the fault code memory with the MoDiTeC”. Don’t skip this – chasing electrical issues without codes is like looking for a leak in the dark.

FAQ

Does this manual include the electrical wiring diagrams?
The table of contents lists construction groups, but the PDF bookmark shows only maintenance and repair procedures up to the “Checking and adjusti” cut-off point. If you need full schematics, verify with the complete file – this manual focuses on mechanical and service operations.
Can I use this for a BMW F 650 Funduro?
No. This is specifically for the F 650 CS (single-cylinder Rotax engine with toothed belt drive). Different frame, different engine cover, different belt system.
What year models does it cover?
The manual was printed in Germany 06/01, so it covers the F 650 CS from introduction through the 2001 model year. Check your VIN for compatibility. The pre-delivery check and maintenance schedule apply to all years up to that print date.
Are the torque values in ft-lb or Nm?
Both. The tightening torques chapter lists values in Nm, but you can convert easily. The manual also includes a table of operating fluids with part numbers. I always work in ft-lb – just multiply Nm by 0.7376 and round to the nearest ft-lb. BMW gives both in later sections anyway.

Source Validity: OEM vs Aftermarket

This is an original BMW Motorrad repair manual, not a reprint or a third-party compilation. The copyright page clearly states “All rights reserved. Not to be reprinted, translated or duplicated either wholly or in part without prior written permission.” The document comes from BMW’s After Sales division and includes references to BMW special tools and the Electronic Parts Catalogue (ETK). I will not trust an aftermarket manual for critical work – the specs were verified by BMW engineers, not a copy shop. If you want your F 650 CS to run like it left the factory in Berlin, use factory data.

You’ve got the wrench, you’ve got the bike, you’ve got the problem. Access the Factory Manual and get the job done right.
