Description
Allison TS2470EN 2005 Troubleshooting Manual – Factory Diagnostics for WTEC II

Allison TS2470EN 2005 Troubleshooting Manual. If you have ever chased a diagnostic code on an MD 3060 or HD 4560 using some third-party printout that mislabeled the pinouts, you know why this document exists. This is the factory manual for the WTEC II electronic controls – the one Allison issued with Rev. 3 from December 2005. It runs 406 pages and covers pre-TransID and TID 1 transmissions. I have seen too many guys burn up a solenoid because they trusted a reprint that had the wrong resistance spec. That doesn’t happen with this.
TS2470EN Transmission: Why the Factory Manual Matters
You are dealing with a transmission that uses a WTEC II ECU, a shift selector, throttle position sensor, speed sensors, and a control module. If the ECU sees an open circuit in the oil level sensor, it will set Code 14. Without the factory schematic – Figure 6-3 for pre-9/94 units, Figure 6-4 for 9/94–12/97 – you are guessing which wire goes where. The manual does not let you guess. It hands you the exact pin numbers, the test points, and the expected voltage values. Page numbers for torque values are [DATA NEEDED] but the diagnostic procedures for each code run from Section 6–1 through 6–6.
Section 1—General Description: WTEC II Components Overview
Section 1 starts with the transmission itself and works through every electronic component. You get block diagrams for the ECU (Figure 1–3), physical locations of the pushbutton and lever shift selectors, and wiring harnesses broken out by production date. Allison split the harness diagrams because the internal wiring changed between 9/94, 11/96, and 12/97. Using the wrong diagram means you could backprobe the wrong cavity. This manual tells you exactly which harness illustration applies to your unit by serial number – see Table 1–1 for TransID breakpoints.
Diagnostic Codes 6–1 to 6–6: Reading and Troubleshooting
Code 13 XX – ECU input voltage. Code 14 XX – oil level sensor. Code 21 XX – throttle position sensor. Code 22 XX – speed sensor. Code 23 XX – shift selector. Code 24 XX – sump fluid temperature. Code 25 XX – output speed sensor. Each code gets its own subsection with a schematic drawing. The manual walks you through the diagnostic response: what the shift selector displays, what the ECU does, and the exact wire test procedure. For Code 32 XX – C3 pressure switch – you need to confirm the switch state with a pressure gauge, not just an ohmmeter. That kind of detail is why you buy factory documentation.
Wire Testing Procedures: Opens, Shorts, and Grounds
Section 4 covers how to test the transmission connector and internal harness for opens, shorts between wires, and shorts to ground. Figure 4–3 shows the feedthrough connector, seal, and internal harness. Most aftermarket guides skip the step of testing the internal harness separately – they tell you to just replace the external harness and hope. This manual makes you test continuity from the ECU connector all the way to the solenoid pack. The difference between a Code 22 caused by a chafed wire and one caused by a bad speed sensor is time wasted. Don’t confuse this with Manual Transmission diagnostics – different procedure entirely.
3 Reasons to Choose OEM Documentation
First, torque specs. Aftermarket reprints often round or omit values. The factory manual includes every fastener torque from Allison – not a generic chart. Second, wiring diagrams that match the production date. Third, diagnostic code troubleshooting that is written by the same engineers who wrote the ECU software. If you are working on a B 500 or an MD 3060, you need the exact OEM procedure for the TransID feature (Table 1–2). The Allison B 500 B 300 B 400 MD 3060 MD 3066 2001 Troubleshooting Manual covers older versions, but this 2005 revision includes updates through Rev. 3.
Who Needs This Manual?
If you own a medium-duty truck with an Allison MD/HD/B series transmission that uses WTEC II controls – and you have a code on the shift selector that won’t clear – you need this. Beginners will find Section 3 “Basic Knowledge” that explains how to use the manual and what tools you need (Allison diagnostic tools are listed in Section 2–2). Professionals will go straight to Section 6 for code troubleshooting. The Allison 1000 2000 2008 Troubleshooting Manual covers later transmissions, but for the MD 3060, HD 4060, and B 400, this TS2470EN is the correct document.
The manual also covers the DO NOT SHIFT LIGHT (Section 2–1) and the Electronic Fluid Level Test (Section 5). You can check oil level electronically through the shift selector – no dipstick needed on these units – but you must follow the procedure exactly or you’ll get a false reading. Section 5–1 walks you through it.
For those working on the HD 4060 or MD 3060 from 2005, the Allison HD 4060 MD 3060 2005 Troubleshooting Manual – OEM Specs is a different publication – this one is the TS2470EN, which is the overarching troubleshooting manual for the WTEC II system across multiple models. Always verify your transmission model and serial number against Table 1–1.
- Does this manual cover the B 500 transmission?
- Yes.
- How do I read diagnostic codes without a scan tool?
- You can read active codes on the shift selector display. Section 6–2 “Code Reading and Code Clearing” explains the button sequence. For example, pressing and holding the mode button while turning the ignition to ON will display any stored codes. The manual includes a complete list of codes in Table 6–2 and the troubleshooting steps for each. If the display shows a code not in the manual, call Allison Technical Assistance at 1-800-252-5283 – the preface says that updates may lag behind code releases.
Stop chasing problems with reprinted PDFs that lose pages and spec accuracy. Access the Factory Manual from AutoRepairManuals and get the full 406 pages of OEM troubleshooting. Every schematic, every test procedure, every torque value – straight from Allison. The Manual Transmission guys can keep their clutch adjustments. For WTEC II, this is the only document you need.
