You have a ZF ECCOM 1.5 on the bench. Maybe it’s from a SDFG Series 20 tractor. Maybe you’ve already pulled the transmission halves apart and found something you don’t recognize. I don’t care if your calibrated elbow feels tight – use a torque wrench with the spec from this page. The manual also includes a dedicated “List of tools” section with ZF part numbers for their special fixtures. You cannot rebuild the drum selector gear without the correct holding tool for the central shaft. The manual tells you which tool to order. No guesswork.

Disassembly of the Clutch Control Block – Section 1.1

Section 1.1 takes you through removing the clutch control block from the transmission. It’s not just “unbolt and lift.” The manual specifies the sequence of disconnecting hydraulic lines, the order of removing cap screws, and how to avoid damaging the O-rings. Same for the system control block (1.2) and the pump (1.3). If you follow these steps in order, you won’t end up with a spring-loaded valve shooting across the shop. I’ve seen it happen. Don’t let it be you.

Reassembly of Planetary Drives – Section 5.2

Section 5.2 is where the manual earns its keep. It covers reassembly of the drum selector gear – planetary transmissions P1, P2, P3, P4 – in reverse order. Each planetary drive has a specific thrust washer thickness and snap-ring groove orientation. The manual gives you the measurement points. For P3, you have to seat the sun gear into the needle bearing before you install the planet carrier. If you force it, you’ll brinell the bearing race. Page 52 shows the exploded view. Follow it, and the unit goes together without binding.

Setting Axial Play for Front Wheel Drive – Section 7.4

One of the most overlooked steps in transmission rebuilds is the axial play setting. Section 7.4 covers the front wheel drive axial play measurement and shim selection. You use a dial indicator on the front wheel drive shaft while torquing the retaining nut to spec. The manual tells you the acceptable range (0.10–0.25 mm) and how to calculate the shim thickness. If you skip this, the front wheel drive bearings will fail inside 200 hours. I’ve replaced those bearings. It’s a full teardown job you don’t want to repeat.

Aftermarket CDs often have generic torque values that don’t match the ECCOM 1.5’s aluminum clutch housing. This manual was printed by ZF Passau GmbH. Frequently Asked Questions

Does this manual cover the hydrostatic unit?
Yes. Sections 3.4 and 4.3 cover disassembly of the input shaft (hydrostatic unit) and disassembly of the hydrostatic unit. Section 5.1 covers reassembly. It includes the correct alignment marks for the drive shaft spline.
Are torque specs given in both Nm and ft-lb?
The conversion table on page 0/3 lists metric–imperial equivalents. The tightening torques table on page 0/6 is in Nm with a column for ft-lb. Every fastener has its value.
What special tools are required?
The list of tools section names 15 ZF special tools including a clutch spring compressor (tool WB/6) and a central shaft holder (tool WB/9). You can buy or rent these from ZF service centers. The manual gives the tool ID so you order the right one.
Can I use this manual for a different ZF transmission?
No. This applies only to the ECCOM 1.5 (SDFG Series 20). Clutch pack arrangements and shimming differ between models. Using it on a 6WG 310 will give you wrong stack heights and torque values. Stick to the correct manual for your unit.
