Engine Section: What’s on Page 4-1

Look at the List of Effective Pages – Section 4 covers the Engine from page 4-1 through 4-14. That’s fourteen pages of factory breakdowns for the Tier III diesel. You get the cylinder head, the fuel injection pump, the cooling system – every subassembly with the original Xtreme part numbers. The engine is a common failure point on these forklifts, especially the injector lines and the turbocharger oil return. Having the right part number the first time keeps the machine in the field, not in your bay.

Transmission and Axles – Where the Manual Saves You Time

Section 5 covers Transmission, Axles, and Driveshafts (pages 5-1 through 5-12). The transmission on the XR842 is a powershift unit with a torque converter. Why a 2008 Parts Catalog Beats a PDF Reprint

This manual was printed in 2008 by Xtreme Manufacturing. It includes Service Bulletins and Design Change Notices (pages B and C of the front matter). Reprints strip those out. If you’re working on a machine that had a factory recall on the hydraulic pump coupling, you need to know which serial numbers were affected. The bulletin list tells you. The catalog also has the Numerical and Alphabetical Indexes (Index 1 through 1-90) – that’s 90 pages of cross-referencing. You can look up a part number like 123456 and find every assembly it belongs to. Try doing that with a PDF that’s been OCR’d from a third-generation photocopy.

3 Systems That Break Most Often on the XR842

From my experience in the field, these three sections get the most wear:

• Section 7 – Hydraulic System (pages 7-1 through 7-56): The control valve, the lift cylinders, and the hoses. The XR842 uses a load-sensing hydraulic system. A bad O-ring in the main relief valve can drop the entire lift circuit. The catalog gives you the seal kit numbers.
• Section 9 – Boom (pages 9-1 through 9-48): The boom structure, the extend cylinders, and the pivot pins. Cracks develop around the weld-on brackets. The exploded view shows the exact wear pads and bushings.
• Section 10 – Cab & Consoles (pages 10-1 through 10-46): The seat, the joystick, the display. The joystick handle assembly is a common replacement. Don’t order the wrong one.

Does this catalog include torque specifications for the engine?

No. This is a parts catalog, not a service manual. It lists part numbers and exploded views, not assembly torque values. You need the separate service manual for torque specs.

Can I use this catalog for the XR842 with a Tier II engine?

Some parts interchange, but the 2008 catalog is for Tier III. The Tier II engine used different injectors and a different turbocharger. The 2006 catalog covers the Tier II. Always verify the serial number against the List of Effective Pages.

How do I find a specific part number like the hydraulic pump coupling?

Use the Numerical Index. The pump coupling is listed under the part number in the index, which refers you to the assembly page in Section 7. The index is 90 pages long – it’s thorough.
