The CT-238 is a Hall Effect probe that can resolve 1 mA from 5 mA to 30 Amps, DC to 20 kHz. That kind of resolution means nothing if you don’t know the overload limits or the correct zero procedure. How to Use the CT-238 Probe Safely

For current measurement, clamp the jaws around a single conductor – not around multiple conductors, not around a cable with both L and N unless you want a canceling field. That mistake will leave you chasing a phantom current reading.

3 Critical Safety Warnings You Should Read Twice

First: the manual says on page 1 that any implied warranty is limited to one year. Return the probe with proof of purchase to an authorized Wavetek Meterman service center – not to your buddy who knows a guy. Second: overload limits differ by range. In the 30A range, the overload is 60A for 30 seconds. Exceed that and you can damage the Hall sensor. Third: the probe is double-insulated (symbol on page 1), but don’t use it on un-insulated live conductors above 600V AC/DC. That is in the general data section. If you work on automotive electrical systems (12V / 24V), you are safe – but I still see techs shove a clamp around a battery cable while the engine is cranking and ignore the duty cycle rating. Battery Replacement: Don’t Skip This Procedure

When the CT-238’s output drifts or the power LED dims, replace the 9V battery. Page 4 shows you how: remove the single screw on the back, lift the cover, slide the battery out. Use a fresh alkaline – no rechargeable 9V unless you verify the voltage stays above 7.5V. The manual also covers factory service on page 4: if the unit fails calibration, send it to an authorized center. Don’t open the housing beyond battery access; that voids the warranty. Without these curves, you are guessing. Page 6 shows the typical accuracy versus frequency for AC signals. At 60 Hz, the CT-238 is within 2% of reading plus 0.5 A. At 20 kHz, the error increases to 10% at high currents. If you are measuring ripple on a switching power supply, you need to compute that error into your result. The manual also tells you the output is AC coupled for AC (1 mV/A) and DC coupled for DC. Mixing those up will send you on a wild goose chase.
