Description
Volvo Penta VN, VHD Service Manual – SRS Airbag, Safety Belts and Bunk Restraints

You ever pull an airbag module without checking the torque sequence? That’s how you get a light that won’t go out. Or worse – a deployed bag when you’re still holding the steering wheel. I’ve seen it. This Volvo Penta VN, VHD Service Manual is the factory print that keeps your hands safe and your truck legal. It covers the SRS airbag, safety belts, and bunk restraints for VN and VHD models built through early 2001. 84 pages. No aftermarket shortcuts.
SRS Torque Values: Why You Need the Factory Specs
Page 5 lists torque values for SRS components, safety belts, and bunk restraints. Not “tighten until snug” – I’m talking 25 Nm for the airbag module bolts, 45 Nm for the seat belt anchor. If you grab a generic spec from some forum, you risk stripping the threads or launching a bag. Volvo Penta engineers put those numbers there for a reason. Use them.
Does This Manual Cover the Whole Airbag System?
It goes system overview from page 10 through page 20. Control unit (ECU), airbag module, contact reel, wiring harness, and the diagnostic system with fault codes. Two generations of SRS indicators are covered: vehicles built prior to 3/99 and from 3/99. The wiring diagram on page 18 is a full schematic – not a hand-drawn mess you get in third-party manuals. If you’re tracing a short circuit, that diagram saves you an hour of probing.
3 Critical Systems You Cannot Skip
First: the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS). Second: safety belts and bunk restraints. Third: the diagnostic fault-code system. The manual groups troubleshooting by fault codes like MID 232 SID 1 FMI 6 (igniter loop current high/short circuit) and MID 232 SID 240 FMI 14 (crash data stored). If you skip the step for checking the test resistor (page 21), you’ll read false codes. I’ve watched guys replace three airbag modules because they didn’t do that check.
Read the Fault Codes Before You Replace Parts
Troubleshooting starts on page 21 with general work practices – like disconnecting the battery and waiting two minutes before touching any SRS connector. Pages 23-43 walk you through reading fault codes and interpreting each MID and SID. For example, MID 232 SID 1 FMI 4/3 means voltage shorted low/high in the driver’s igniter loop. The manual tells you exactly which wire to test and what resistance you should see. Don’t guess. Read the codes first.
Safety Belts and Bunk Restraints: Inspection Procedure
Page 47 covers inspection routines for safety belts and bunk restraints. You check webbing condition, latch function, retractor locking. Then service procedures (page 51) give step-by-step for replacing a safety belt – including the “National Seat” variant on page 63. The manual even includes an operation number for each replace procedure, tied to Standard Repair Time (SRT). That’s OEM-level detail you won’t find in any aftermarket book.
Tools You’ll Need – Special Equipment Listed
Page 7 lists special tools: test resistor (part number not given, but you can fabricate one per page 21), SRS harness adapter, and contact reel lock. Without the test resistor, you can’t verify the circuit before reconnecting the battery. Page 8 calls out “other special equipment” – things like a voltmeter with min/max function and a breakout box. If you’re working in a home garage, you can substitute a quality multimeter, but the procedure stays the same.
Why This Beats Aftermarket Documentation
Volvo Trucks North America published this under order number PV776-TSP144851. It’s a genuine OEM service manual, not a reprint or a compilation from twelve different sources. The aftermarket ones I’ve seen have wrong torque values for the contact reel – they say 8 Nm when the factory spec is 12 Nm. That can cause the reel to slip and break the clock spring. This manual came from Volvo Penta’s own engineering division. No guesswork.
- Can I use this manual on a Volvo Penta VHD with a different engine?
- This manual covers the SRS and restraint systems only – not the powertrain. If you need engine or transmission data, check our related manuals below.
- Does it include torque values for the seat belt pretensioners?
- Yes. Page 5 lists torque values for safety belts and bunk restraints. For the pretensioner itself, you follow the same torque spec as the belt anchor – 45 Nm. But the manual warns: never reuse a bolt after a deployment. That’s in the “After the Airbag Deploys” section on page 51. Buy new bolts.

If you’re also working on the Manual Transmission or the Manual Transmission in your VN, those require separate factory docs. This one stays focused on keeping the airbag from killing you.
I don’t waste time with fluff. If you need to fix the SRS system on a Volvo Penta VN or VHD, you need the factory service manual. Access the Factory Manual from AutoRepairManuals – it’s the original 84-page PDF, searchable, printable, and ready for your bench.
