Volkswagen Touran, Caddy Training Manual – Natural Gas System

30-page factory training manual for VW Touran and Caddy CNG system. Covers thermal release, gas pressure regulator, and shut-off tap.
Description
I’m Mike Callahan, 28-year ASE Master Tech. You’re looking at a Volkswagen Touran, Caddy Training Manual – the factory training doc for the EcoFuel natural gas system. If you’re a DIYer who’s about to touch a CNG tank or regulator on a Touran or Caddy, stop right here. I’ve seen guys skip the thermal release check and leave a glass tube that should have been replaced. This 30-page manual from Volkswagen shows you exactly how the system works and what to do when it gets hot. It’s not a service manual with torque values – it’s the safety and operation training that every tech should read before touching the gas side.

Volkswagen Touran, Caddy Training Manual: Natural Gas System Basics
Page 2 starts with the thermal release – a glass tube that seals the gas outlet. At 110°C, the fluid inside expands, the tube bursts, and gas escapes through a drainage channel. That’s your safety margin in a fire. The manual shows the shut-off tap too: a mechanical valve you can close with a tool before removing the tank. It’s on page 3: “The drainage channel for the thermal release is also open when the shut-off tap is closed.” That detail keeps you from trapping pressure. I’ve had to debrief a tech who didn’t read that – he cracked a line and got a face full of gas.
Thermal Release: When the Glass Tube Bursts at 110°C
Page 2 gives the full breakdown: glass tube, fluid, gas outlet, flow outlet. The manual says the thermal release prevents tank bursting if pressure rises from heat. The diagrams on S373_023 and S373_015 show the glass tube intact and after burst. If you’re working on a Caddy that’s been in a storage shed all summer, check that glass tube for cracks. The manual says it bursts at 110°C – you need to know that before you assume the system is safe to pressurize.
What the Gas Pressure Regulator Section Tells You
Page 4 covers the gas pressure regulator mounted on the front right longitudinal member. It drops pressure from 200 bar to about 6 bar in a single stage. The manual lists components: coolant connections, filter, fuel tank pressure sensor G400, high-pressure valve N372, pressure reduction stage, mechanical excess pressure valve. That’s the whole high-to-low pressure chain. For any DIYer pulling this regulator, you need to know the high-pressure side is live until the shut-off tap is closed. The manual doesn’t give torque specs – for that you need the workshop manual, like Volkswagen Golf Passat Touran 2003-2006 Workshop Manual – but it tells you the layout and which lines go where.
Manual Shut-Off Tap: Close It Before Removing the Tank
Page 3 shows the shut-off tap closed and open. The manual says to use a tool to close it – no hand wheel. Gas-tight seal required. And the drainage channel stays open even when closed. That’s a safety step I’ve seen missed: people forget to leave the channel open, and then the thermal release can’t vent. The manual says “Please see ELSA for more detailed information on repair work.” So this training manual gives you the concept – you need ELSA or a full service manual for the actual removal procedure. That’s why I also keep Volkswagen Touran Caddy Training Manual on the bench – it’s the same doc, but having a physical copy next to the car beats scrolling.
30 Pages of OEM Safety Data – No Aftermarket Substitute
Aftermarket docs don’t have the factory diagrams for the thermal release or the exact wording on shut-off tap closure. I’ve seen third-party summaries that say “remove the gas tank” and skip the part about glass tube burst temperature. This manual is 30 pages of Volkswagen-specific training. It’s not a reprint – it’s the original PDF from the VW training program. If you work on CNG cars, this is the only source you should trust. For comparison, the Automotive Industry Overview from major manufacturers shows similar safety protocols, but this VW manual gives you the exact part numbers and layout for Touran and Caddy.
That’s the manual. Thirty pages of factory data. No filler.
FAQ
- Does this manual include torque specifications for the gas system?
- No. It’s a training manual, not a service manual.
- How does the thermal release prevent tank rupture in a fire scenario?
- The manual (page 2) explains that a glass tube containing fluid seals the gas outlet. At temperatures above 110°C, the fluid expands and bursts the tube, allowing natural gas to escape via a drainage channel. This prevents pressure buildup that could cause the tank to explode. The manual includes diagrams of the glass tube, gas outlet, and flow path. For a shop tech, this is the difference between a controlled vent and a catastrophic failure. Many aftermarket documents skip this detail entirely – see the industry comparison at Automotive Industry Overview for context on why factory data matters.
